So, as mentioned. I missed a ballot.

The major change, was that a once beloved show regained a place in the Top 30 (well deserved in my opinion). To ensure the show gets it's due. Please congratulate the new 23rd ranked entry.

23. Fargo (FX)
UP 49
26 Points, 5 Nominations, #1 spot 1 time

This means that everything below it got bumped 1 spot.

The other change was Legend of Tomorrow which moved up from #22 to #18 which mean 18-22 got bumped a spot as well.

We've Got To Go Back
Thank you Looten Plunder. I shouldn't be surprised, but I still am that The Mandalorian got so high on the list. Plus I thought Ted Lasso would be slightly higher, and The Crown has dropped in viewers it seems despite another great season (switch it with The Mandalorian and I would agree with this list a lot more). That said the people have spoken, so be it. I did end up with 4 shows in the final top 10, while my number 1 (We Are Who We Are) finished at 31. I think that is my second worst showing for my number 1 pick outside of the year I picked Terrace House as top show.

Next season is the last and given the COVID timing it might be a little bit before it comes out, so you have time to get caught up and then be mad like the rest of us that Rhea Seehorn doesn't have an Emmy!

Interesting Tidbits:
  • There were 45 respondents this year, which is the highest since 2016.
  • The decentralization of TV viewing is truly in effect and network execs have every right to be making GBS threads themselves. This year saw 161 unique shows nominated which is the highest in TVIV Poll history.
  • Further proving the point, these 161 shows were across 53 different networks/channels/services. This is 10 more than 2019 and tied with 2017 for the most unique networks ever.
  • Perhaps due to the pandemic, perhaps due to the end of the Golden Era of television, 58% (94) of the shows in this years list were new entries. This isn't just a case of people picking lots of random obscure shows at the bottom of their lists either as the percentage only drops to 50% when just considering the Top 30.
  • Netflix accounted for 16% of the shows on the list and 13% of of the total votes. Whilst this is impressive, other streaming services have definitly picked up their game and Netflix is definitly losing it's stranglehold. For comparison, in 2019 Netflix had 26% of the shows and 22% of the total votes
  • Despite The Walking Dead being largely irrelevant on these forums now and the glory years of Mad Men and Breaking Bad well behind them, AMC somehow still garnered the 2nd most votes with 238. This is even more impressive given the fact it was just two shows that contributed to this number.
  • FX continues to pump out quality TV with 6 shows making the list and getting the 3rd most number of votes (211)
  • Netflix might have quantity, but HBO still has Quality. Despite awesome shows like High Maintenance and Insecure, that Hugh Grant/Nicole Kidman show that generated a fair bit of buzz and lot of solid to awesome documentaries barely registering on this years poll (if at all) they still had 11 shows make the list (most outside of Netflix) and 209 votes (4th most)

2021 Plans

I've got big plans this year. In addition to next years poll going ahead as normal I want to try something else as well. Inspired by all the "best of the decade" lists last year, I want to try a Best TV shows of the TVIV era as next year will mark the 10th Annual Poll.

I'm thinking of launching this and accepting ballots earlier in the year (about July) in an attempt to get solid uptake and because i'll be extending the nominations out to 20 instead of 10 (10 will be mandatory, anything up to 20 will be optional).

The results of this can be shared in December and the results of the 2020 poll will be done in January as normal.

DOES NOT RESPECT THE RUN

BUT THEY WILL
Oh man, that is an awesome idea!

This year was the first I participated in the annual poll, and even then it was just because it sounded like entries were sparse at the time. But it does instill a bit more investment in the final results and I've been kicking myself for not ranking some shows higher just to see them do better in the overall results.

I'm going to start thinking about where my decade rankings might fall but I have no idea what will qualify or what I even watched within the acceptable window. I look forward to you launching the thread with more details! You're going to make me rewatch a dozen series and I thank you for that since it seems like slim pickin's on new shows (that seem interesting to me) lately.

It's anything that aired in 2012 onwards.

For, the top 25 in the first poll was:
Breaking Bad
Parks and Recreation
Game of Thrones
Mad Men
Community
Homeland
Louie
Boardwalk Empire
Justified
Archer
Happy Endings
Sherlock
New Girl
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Sex House
Bob's Burgers
The League
Psych
American Horror Story
The Walking Dead
Person of Interest
Don't Trust the B in Apt 23
Fringe
Adventure Time
Shameless

But yeah, stay tuned for more details in a few months.
