basically but you only roll whn you arent guaranteed to succeed and failure could be interesting. like turning on the lights isnt interesting and pretty easy so you wouldnt roll but there could be consequences for intimidating the shopkeeper so you would

I think your stats also can add to the roll so if you 're a strong guy you can pick up a rock easier than the week guy and don't need as good a roll

these guys got it. but when you play dnd its important to realize that not every person can do any roll - when i run the game, i will often say something like "emmy, because you are very strong," and give emmy the roll specifically. i dont call for dice rolls unless failing is interesting. technically you could fail to go down the stairs and trip and fall, but that doesnt make the game better so theres no reason to do it.

once people fail i decide if i kill the scene or if i build pressure. so if you fail to intimidate the shopkeeper, he might not tell you to gently caress off, but he doesnt immediately agree and goes 'hm... well....' and now an off duty guard person can come in to the scene and now you have to ask if you want to try to push to try to force that shopkeeper to buy your useless poo poo. or i might just have the shopkeeper tell them to gently caress off. it depends

I see. So the guy whos a wimpy piece of poo poo could roll a clutch miracle number and save the day in like an anime moment or the badass warrior clumsily gently caress up cause he rolls bad ( but it wouldnt be catastrophic cause of his base stats?)

pretty much this. in combat especially you have a lot of moments like that because if you crit you automatically hit and the game is designed so everything is high lethality

that sounds cool but a lot of it really depends on the dungeon guy lord having a good imagination right.


also is there a luck stat. would it be possible to make someone who is all or nothing with luck, either gets impossibly good luck or impossibly bad luck and nothing in between or like the fallout thing where youre so unlucky even your enemies are affected by it and their guns jam and explode in their hands, or would it all be too wackey monkey cheese random

a good dungeon master is a must and its so important that people paid me money to pretend to be elves for them. theres no luck stat per se but there are things that emulate luck and bad luck in this game. for example, in fifth edition there is the feat "lucky" which lets you reroll things 3 times a day. you can reroll it against enemies to make them fail horribly. if i was a dm for a character like that i would definitely play it up if they rolled poorly and let them use their ability to reroll the enemys stuff to make them unlucky as well

In my last campaign we went on a riverboat and ignored the political plot to fetch food for a comically gluttonous noble and then the whole campaign became about riding around with him on his giant boat traveling the world looking for new foods to eat

In the Curse of Strahd campaign there’s a very important NPC we needed to escort. She got captured and some story plot stuff happened around her etc. The thing is our players kept forgetting about her every step of the way of our campaign so she became a butt of a joke. So anytime she’s show up we’d shrug her off and forget she even exists. The last encounter with her one of the players tripped her into mud right before we storm the castle of Strahd. Good times.

strahd is cool like that because every single person i know ends up going off the rails somehow. when the guy who wrote it ran the game even he went off script and started making stuff up

I thought it was just my DM that did it. One homebrew idea my DM he came up with was these phoenixs that lives under a big city in Barovia. The town was slowly sinking into the ground where the phoenixs lived. Let’s just say that town was a crater because we forget to deal with it lol.

My wish lives in the future.
Here is a story about the best call of cthulhu character I ever encountered, Flotsam Ahab.

In Call of Cthulhu games, characters usually roll random stats, and most characters end up being human average or below in terms of their statistics. It's because it's a horror themed game so characters are supposed to be average people encountering some spooky stuff.

Flotsam Ahab (I didn't name him, the player did) rolled the highest he could in three separate statistics, and rolled above average everywhere else. Notably, he rolled extremely highly in the stats that are used to give you points to spend on skills, making him a genius master of a variety of skills, including sword fighting, hiding, reading books, and swimming. He also had extremely high 'sanity,' a statistic in call of cthulhu that goes down as you encounter more horrible supernatural stuff.

Flotsam joined a party that was combatting a shapeshifting, body possessing demon in 1890s New Orleans. This demon had possessed the loved ones of other PCs, lured them into traps, and was generally being horrible. The PCs had finally learned they could banish the demon in an ancient temple in India through research, and hired Flotsam to accompany them across the ocean. Of course, beforehand the demon stole the face of a fellow passenger and crept aboard. Halfway across the Atlantic, it called forth some horrible fishmen from the depths. As the fishmen attacked crew and players, it stalked the ship looking for a lone PC to devour. It found Flotsam Ahab on the deck of the ship, who, thanks to his amazing listening abilities, was able to hear the thing creeping up on him.

Flotsam drew his sword and dueled this demon on the rainy deck of the ship while the rest of the PCs struggled against the encroaching fishmen. He stabbed the demon so many times that it actually started to run the risk of being slain right there, ending the campaign prematurely. Instead it had to jump off the ship into the ocean to escape him. Without backup, Flotsam stabbed the remaining fishmen to death, saving the remaining PCs, who were letting one pc get devoured while the others spent multiple turns reloading their terrible 1890s guns, or going mad from encountering fishmen.

They make it to India, and find out Flotsam is the only character who speaks Hindi because he speaks like, seven languages. He successfully negotiates an elephant and a crew to transport the PCs into the jungle to find the temple. The demon, meanwhile, had shapeshifted and journeyed to India as well, and now stalked the PCs in the jungle in the form of a massive tiger. Over the next few nights of travel it tried to raid the camp of the PCs. Every night there was Flotsam, waiting, this time with his trademark elephant gun. He could always hear it coming, thanks again to his tremendous listening ability. Again, he nearly killed the demon before it could be banished, but is escaped into the woods before he could finish it off each time.

Finally, they made it to the temple, and found an endless chasm in the earth beneath it, where they started the ritual to banish the demon forever. While this happened, the demon attacked again, and the ritual caused a minor earthquake. Flotsam lost his elephant gun to the chasm below, and so drew his sword and dueled the giant tiger to the death over the chasm, while every other PC managed to fail their saves and fall into the chasm. Alone, Flotsam dueled the tiger demon, while chanting the final ritual to completion, banishing the demon for eternity, although he was about to stab it to death anyway.

As the only surviving party member, he used the PCs leftover gear to pay their expedition, and wrote a best-selling book with his prodigious writing ability. That book occasionally shows up in new call of cthulhu games I run now, because I've never had a character be this much of an action hero in a cthulhu game.

I read the "what is Imp Zone" thread and came away wondering that exact question, but I'll bite:

How is someone actually supposed to determine the possible range of encountered dungeon monsters per dungeon level in pre-3e D&D? This may come as a shock, but Gygax is incredibly loving vague on little things like "the rules for running the game", and I can't figure out if there's an actual method for determining how many flumphs you should throw at a party or if I should just toke up and guess.

A good rule of thumb is to roughly match the party's hp totals as a starting point. If all else fails just steal encounters from a video game they'll never know.

If I remember properly:

Flumphs have a Challenge Rating of 1. That means it should be a good encounter for a party of 1st level. Every additional CR1 monster you add increases the CR of the encounter by 1 meaning 2 is going to be a challenge for a party of 1st level, but not impossible.

Don't quote me on the exact math, it's been a long time since 3.5
