Death Proof is A tier, if and only if you were able to see it in its original theatrical run as part of Grindhouse at an Alamo Drafthouse where the crowd was really into the whole experience and you could drink beer and chill.
oh hell yeah

original double feature run w/the fake trailers and everything with a rowdy crowd was an absolute blast.
only way to experience it

when we walked out the first thing I said was "tarantino cheated. he made a good movie"
because rodriguez made a goofy, over-the-top, parodic, almost like what grind house movies probably wished they could be, like he'd only ever seen 42nd street forever and never actually sat down and watched any exploitation movies
tarantino made something that was more like what those movies actually were- extremely long, pointless dialogue scenes that could be shot on the cheap to pad out the run-time around the borderline pornographic special effects/stuntwork set pieces- except he took thta structure and made something that was just a good movie in its own right, so by the time you're back to the schlock, it's this fabulous crescendo on top of an amazing evening

audience was just loving this goofy rollercoaster with rocket leg stripper and badass mexican knife guy and michael parks with his chili recipe and bruce willis as the leader of the zombies who secretly took out osama bin laden, then the original machete fake trailer with cheech marin as a shotgun-toting priest and DON'T. (Don't.)

also
:sigh:
eli roth was there too I guess 🙄

then tarantino comes in with this cheap dialogue-heavy car movie, which he made an actually fun and enjoyable watch during the boring parts (even having the ENORMOUS BALLS to use his "missing reel" gag to skip the lap dance scene), in... I want to say 5 acts? and by the time you realize what's happening you're watching the heroes heroically karate kicking kurt russel's face in and the entire audience is cheering in approval

and then the movie just ends with comical triumphant horns

and then the movie un-ends and they literally smash his jaw into his face :hellyeah:

and then the movie actually ends and the credits roll with this amazing violent and goofy 60's throwback

you're gonna need a heap of glue when they all catch up with you and they cut you up in two

Probably because it isn't a Tarantino film.

At least, he didn't direct it. He has a screenplay credit, but then you have to count a bunch of other movies.

Mean Streets is really good; incredibly strong and self-assured right out the gate. Some weird slow pacing here and there but that's the '70s for ya. David Proval is scary as hell and easily goes toe to toe with De Niro.

The first half of Casino is great but it started to lose me when it became all about how much this dude's wife sucks.

Yeah I watched Casino again a couple months back and it really sags from when Ginger starts seeing Nicky and they're just sneaking around while Ace tries to hold everything together. I actually forgot how much that whole subplot eats into the running time and started getting kinda agitated. The movie picks up again once she hits the road for good and Nicky gets exiled, and ultimately it sticks the landing, but that diversion is what keeps Casino below Goodfellas for me.

priznat posted:

Sharon Stone is amazing in Casino, Ginger is such a trainwreck but at the same time you kinda get why Ace didn’t just kick her out sooner. He fooled himself into trusting her.

Also the kid messing with Lester never fails to crack me up.

And that's what sucks, Sharon Stone is doing god-tier acting throughout the movie but that subplot just sucks a little too much air out of the room.

we watched Ticks (1993)

unexpectedly great schlock. recommend.

it starts with seth green going to the city and he is immediately challenged to be good at basketball or die by the first black man he sees, played by alfonso ribeiro, who is named "panic"
but it turns out to be a fake out and alfonso ribeiro is actually just a cool guy(?)
then some giant ticks kill clint howard by making him step in his own bear trap that he had for some reason. I don't know why this scene is in the movie
then seth green and panic and a bunch of teens that look and act like they were created by somebody whose only exposure to humanity was saved by the bell and friday the 13th part 3 go to the woods, and it turns out ticks have been eating marijuana plants and it made them grow gigantic and also they lay eggs in people now :o
there's like 20 solid minutes of people fighting giant ticks that, I don't want to set the bar of expectations too high because it's not THAT good, but it kind of reminded me of Dead Alive. because all the characters end up in the same building when the poo poo pops off and regardless of how good of a person they are up until that point poo poo just happens. and there is fire and explosions and grotesque practical effects and some legitimately unexpected moments

Why not? I imagine the film will give you as much backstory as necessary. Unicorn did.
