i was really hyped to love this episode and i kinda didn't care for it tbh. garfield's backstory is compelling but i don't really understand how it connects to his current actions nor do i understand his reasoning. also they really could've had an episode or two before the second story of garfield's mom, some distance between those beats would've really made it hit harder.

this is one of the places where how dense the web novel is with internal monologues and flashbacks doesn't really translate well to animation. this stuff isn't supposed to be obsure, if anything the WN is sometimes downright amateurish in terms of telling you directly why the characters are motivated to do or not do X

it's further complicated by some really weird decisions to retcon or rearrange events in the anime that i don't want to get into for spoiler reasons but should be clear by the end of the arc

As someone who was die hard all aboard the Rem train since early on in this series and never really cared for Emilia at all... this season has been really turning me around on her. This and the last episode especially helped that a lot. I'm looking forward to next week since I'm sure it'll help push that even more.

Honestly this episode kinda pulled a lot of stuff out of its rear end.

Subaru suddenly has a bunch of extra magical powers too now that he needs to beat someone who tore dozens of little magical elf girls and even RAM to shreds in a previous life.

This has actually been heavily foreshadowed although admittedly I wish there was more build up to Subaru figuring it out.

It also came at the price of Subaru destroying his gate and thus being unable to use magic again.

Subaru didn't even win the fight, he only got a couple blows in on an already beaten down Garfiel. Patrasche is the one that came out on top.

It looked like Puck's broken the contract with Emilia and transitioned to another crystal to help Subaru but because they didn't explain it in any way I'm not actually sure

I'm a little confused about him now, actually. He was dressing the same as he does now and being addressed as "Archbishop," so presumably he was already a cultist, but he was less crazy back then, or at least he still bothered to hide how crazy he was. Or was he actually an Echidna cultist or something back then (hence Beatrice knowing him) and switched to worshipping Satella after he went crazy for some reason? Also, he was actually very old already at that point (he claimed that Fortuna was much younger that him, despite her being an adult elf, who age more slowly that humans in most fantasy settings), but he somehow seems to have aged rapidly over the next decade or two. Presumably it was witch magic keeping him young in the first place, since he appears to be human, so what changed? Does he just stay young by body-hopping when people try to kill him, and his body's aging is actually accelerated? And was he just providing the elves with supplies and helping them "protect" Emilia so that Satella could possess Emilia later, and was just deceiving Fortuna and the other elves about his true motives, or did he actually have good intentions at that point?

I'm not sure how much of this was already explained at some point and I've just forgotten and how much is actually supposed to be a mystery. I think we were told something important about Emilia's parents in the Frozen Bond OVA that's relevant to all this, but I can't remember what it was.

When Grouchio is off their probe they have some info from the authors episode commentary to provide some clarification about this episodes events.

I think one thing to consider is to remember the Geuse said directly in the episode that he lives a very long time, to the point that the hundreds of years old elf auntie he views as a child. I think it's being strongly hinted these events took place a long time ago.

Speculation: I think Geuss's apparent aging is probably due to whatever drove him mad. I don't think he hid anything or actually has any kind of nefarious intent, I think whatever momentous events are occurring eventually broke him and the prophecy or whatever it is written in the gospel became his refuge and his sanity slipped away.

My speculation His aging might just be normal aging. We know he can body hop, and that ability isn't related to his sloth authority. Maybe the young Geuse we see here isn't his original body, and his long life is from continued body hoping and not having a single long lasting lifespan. It could also be the present day geezer Geuse is a different body from past Geuse, one he has been in long enough to change his hair to better fit his past body.

Finished the game. It's alright. Don't buy it.

It took approximately 10 hours to 100% so def not worth it per dollar.

If you're still interested you don't really need to worry about spoilers too much. It's an alternate version of the 3rd arc so while there is some stuff that got dropped from the anime there is only one oblique spoiler that comes from the side story books. It's a single throw away line and doesn't really explain anything so you might be fine to play it anyway if you're really interested in what is essentially a 10 hour what if story.

I might be the only one, but I didn't understand anything about this episode. I think I've completely lost the plot on this show. Geuse appearing normal, then acting the way he does when he sees emilia doesn't make sense to me. I have no idea what the seal is. I don't know what subaru's gate magic thing is, what happened to it or why he has ghost hands now. I don't know why puck is playing hide and seek. In the last moments of the episode, somebody who I do not recognize at all shows up and talks how every shounen antagonist talks before a fight, but apparently I'm supposed to know who that is and I don't.

I'm watching this show in the same way somebody can finish a book, then fail to recall a single thing they read.

It's pretty obvious that they're still explaining the whole backstory surrounding Geuse's relationship with Emilia and her elf clan.

For everything else, you should probably just go back and rewatch the first season + the first episode of season two. The rest of it isn't new, you just have probably forgotten all of it.

Subaru broke his gate by using Shamak when it wasn't recovered yet, you might recognize the ghost hand from Petelgeuse and the guy at the end of the episode is the Archbishop of Greed, one of the guys who attacked Rem at the beginning of Season 2.

Most should be explained next episode. There is a seal and this seems to be Emilia's village before she got frozen, what do you expect to happen to an ominous seal surrounded by ice?

We know Fortuna wanted to keep them separate for a reason, though apparently it wasn't a life and death matter. Personally his reaction reminds me quite a bit of Puck's reaction in the Frozen Bonds OVA.

Gate's are what people use to channel mana and cast spells. Subaru's never had good control of his to the point he had to spend arc 3 at Crusch's house getting treatment from Felix. At the beginning of the season he was told not to use magic again for two months. Breaking that rule caused his gate to shatter meaning he'll never use magic again.

He has ghost hands because after Petelguese died the witch factor he held went into Subaru. We don't know much in the way of specifics about what that is though.

I kind of have, yeah. I've also completely forgotten what happened in Log Horizon, so this isn't specific to RE:Zero. I literally don't remember puck telling subaru he damaged his gate, or that he needed to rest for two months. I thought this was made clear before the fight even started, with Subaru realizing her own sister didn't recognize the name? I should probably just re-watch that scene, because I honestly barely remember it at all, and don't recall why it even exists in the story itself. Rem was forgotten about in season 1 because of the whale (another gluttony aligned magical beast). The whale was killed in what should have been a pretty memorable fight scene involving Wilhelm finally catching and killing his metaphorical and literal Captain Ahab white whale.

Subaru inherited the slot witch factor from Petelguese after killing him. Echidna comments on this during their first meeting, I believe. And it's hinted that would happen even during their fights with how easily he was able to possess Subaru in those couple loops.
