Speaking only of what I've checked out on youtube, the Tull ones are kind of inconsistent. Some of it sounds good ("Songs from the Wood" as posted above is fine, for instance) but a lot sounds extremely weird to my ears. In many cases I feel like the instruments do sound cleaner, but that the individual clarity comes at the expense of cohesion.

A good example of this is "Kelpie", which is a bonus track off Stormwatch and one of my favorite JT songs.

Here's the original:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyR7pdLDz_g

And here's the remix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1rcaL0fpio

To my ears, the remix completely and entirely sucks the life out of the song. It comes across incredibly stilted. It's almost sad to hear such a fun and energetic song sounding so lifeless.

Not everything is quite this bad, but yeah. My favorite JT album is Heavy Horses and I think it came out mostly unscathed but I still prefer the original remix. On that one I feel like the bass got unfairly nerfed, particularly on the title track but also elsewhere. Ultimately I didn't spend any money on these anyway and the originals are still available on youtube and for purchase (I think?) so it's all good.

Heavy Horses is probably my favorite tull album too. Journeyman/Rover/One Brown Mouse is probably one of my favorite three track throughs of any album ever

i had no idea steven wilson was remastering Tull until I just looked at this thread, I am a huge fan of his but much like with his work on the yes remasters it seems kind of hit or miss

dun ringill is the best song on stormwatch tho and i really like the remix a lot

It probably is but I have a real soft spot for North Sea Oil even though there's ostensibly nothing particularly remarkable about it.

And yeah HH is just an amazing album. Journeyman specifically is massively underrated, I feel like nobody ever talks about that song and it's outrageously good. And Acres Wild is straight-up my all-time favorite JT song.

I read somewhere that Ian doesn't like his vocals on the record cause he had a cold while recording, but that added raspiness just makes it better imo.

i fell like big black's "Songs about loving" would make a good alternate title for Songs from the Wood.

So looks like the whole Cardiacs back catalogue just went live on (nearly) every streaming service going.

Kind-of feeling mixed on this as independent bands make poo poo money from Spotify(and it can kill off album sales in some cases), but the trade-off is more people will actually get to hear this stuff.

I haven't listened to any new DT since, Octavarium? But SFAM totally owns and I'm unironically glad we have 2 full live recordings of it.

I'm digging that LTE track. Newer Dream Theater (2010 to present) has a few bangers, but most of the songs are just way too plodding and the bad kind of noodly IMO.

Yeah, my thoughts as well. Basically when you give Petrucci full creative control you end up with something that's at best kinda mediocre and at worst unlistenable garbage.

I've listened to The Astonishing twice and I can't remember any of it other than wondering when it was going to be over and looking at the track list to see I still had over an hour to go.

Just wanted to post this somewhere: I recently picked up We Can't Dance by Genesis after hearing my dad's cassette tape of it in the car a million times when I was a kid, and it strikes me as kind of funny that the song Dreaming While You Sleep is lyrically a mirror image of In The Air Tonight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBz6nXgef9Q

In The Air Tonight: "I saw you kill someone through inaction and you think you got away with it but I will make sure you see justice"
Dreaming While You Sleep: "I just accidentally killed someone and got away with it, and I feel bad about it but boy I sure hope I don't see justice"

just an extremely specific situation that Phil Collins wrote two songs about from different viewpoints

That's reminding me of.. something on the tip of my brain. I just flipped through their catalogue on spotify and nothing triggered for me though. Ahh this is going to bug me. A remix they did maybe? drat.

Also is this the thread where we talk about Devin Townsend? Because drat I love him. I've always been aware of him but just recently been working my way through his catalogue & just ordered the Order of Magnitude bundle off his site. For some reason the Devin Townsend Band albums aren't on spotify in Canada, so I gotta figure out something else there (that doesn't involve pirating).

Seems like it could be happening. I mean, here's what Cedric said in 2019 about a possible reunion:

Cedric posted:

What it’s NOT going to be is your ‘fav member lineup’ playing their ‘classic records’ in full etc. Maybe we’ll play old poo poo, who knows how we feel. Just remember our past campaigns never relied on playing requests or going fully backwards ...it’s new poo poo, new people, left turns , tangent inconsistencies, mazapan dreams and churro wishes. I will say this though, when ORL played me a grip of new poo poo I loving cried. Like Claire Daines in Romeo & Juliet cried. Yeah it was loving weird. It’s in its infancy right now. No deadlines, no ball tripping, no drama, just 2 grown rear end men using essential oils and bold new perfumes shooting ideas and scooting their rear end across the loving lawn trying to get rid of these worms.

So, uh, yeah that seems pretty clear that something is up!
