Shiroc posted:I was already down this week and now I'm feeling devastated, which feels weird since I never actually saw him play but he was always one of the legends. When I was in Milwaukee I wandered around the Brewers parking lot in the rain before the game to find the plaque for his last home run. Hank and Willie are the only two autographed balls I have for people I never saw play in person but I needed to have them. I'm glad I did get to see Hank speak a few years ago at the Frank Robinson statue dedication in Cleveland. Devastated, really? Dude was 86. (I'm not trying to rip on you.)

It turns out its totally normal to feel sad about someone dying even if their death isn't statistically unlikely. Who knew?

To be honest I was surprised he died before Mays Willie has been in bad shape for years and I had not heard that Hank was sick

I wonder if Hank will turn out to be covid related because they haven't said any cause yet that I had seen. These are my Hank and Willie balls:

I'm pretty broke up about it too, to be honest, and he retired almost a decade before I was born. There weren't a lot of guys I knew anything about before my time, but Aaron was one of the ones I knew the best when I was a kid. I had one of those Topps "baseball talk" players with the cards that had little records embedded on them, and the player came with a Hank Aaron card with a little interview and the Milo Hamilton call.

Always knew today would happen but I still wasn't prepared for it. Back at Turner Field, they still had Fulton County Stadiums wall up that he hit 715 over in the parking lot. Seeing that as a kid felt like a religious experience. Like back then, Chipper and Glavine and them felt like superheroes, but hearing stories about Hank from my mom made him sound like God. I never got to see him play, I never met him, but he will always be the home run king to me, and I am devastated. The call of a black man beating Babe Ruth's record and being celebrated for it is one of the few moments I've ever been proud of my state. RIP, Hank

In much lighter news, one of the most joyful and delightful Dodgers to watch in recent years is headed to Boston. https://twitter.com/Feinsand/status/1352782633718194179 I hope he's appreciated there.

Dude deserves a lot of love and appreciation for the ~~~intangible energy~~~ he brought to the club, to say nothing of the positional versatility and clutch postseason moments. In a lot of ways, he was the spirit animal of the Friedman-era Dodgers, especially as having been part of the Dee Gordon trade that helped kick off the core group's run of success. I am going to miss him a lot and it will be very strange to not have him around! But I am glad that he will (seemingly) have the opportunity to make even more of a name for himself as an everyday player. Vernacular fucked around with this message at 03:05 on Jan 23, 2021 |

Late to the Hank Aaron news because this day sucked, now it sucks more. RIP one of the all time greats. In cubsposting news, the Cubs signed their first actual, honest to god major league deal of this offseason. They went out and got... a backup catcher. For $1.5M. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1352657089336897538

https://twitter.com/Britt_Ghiroli/status/1352825752148996097?s=20 I don't have an Athletic sub so I haven't read this but apparently MASN is cutting all coverage of the Orioles and Nationals except the game broadcasts. They told the teams if they wanted pre and post game coverage they have to pay for it themselves. I can't believe the MASN deal has somehow become even more of a loving disaster.

I'm not sure why I but I always thought of Austin Romine as a long time Detroit Tiger but apparently that was only 2020? My AL baseball memory is bad. Also yeah he sure is a uh, back up catcher...

Braves claimed two randos waived by the Phillies, both previously from the Dodgers. OF Kyle Garlick has a small sample of being good in LA in 2019 and bad in Philly in 2020; RP Victor Arano is a TJS reclamation case, his 2019 season cut short by injury after debuting in 2017 and looking very solid over the following year. That fills the 40-man.

I think they are just claiming poverty and cutting literally everything they can without violating any contracts. Locally from the rumor mill, Angelos is in hospice care and is 91 years old anyway. The league approved one of his sons (John Angelos) to run the team last year. Not sure if Lou Angelos has any real involvement but usually if you see one of them in the media it is John. No idea what will happen to the team once Peter dies. Rumors of the taxes being too high for the kids to continue to own it. But as long as the lawsuit continues to drag through the courts, it will be an albatross for any change of ownership.

The Rays sucked when the pirates were good and they will suck again when the pirates are good again. Nothing is permanent The payroll is going to be a total embarrassment and it is painfully stupid to sell so low on Taillon unless a team is totally confident in his health (for some reason) and is valuing him as a ready to go middle of the rotation starter
