I’ll go to bat for the Bad Ben series. Theyre horror/comedy things that used to be on Prime streaming but are now on youtube and the Bad Ben TV roku channel. Basically the guy wanted to make a movie and when he crew bailed he just made it with himself. And then he made 6 more. The second is the weakest and the cartoon should be avoided at all costs

In a similar vein to Unedited Footage of a Bear, there's This House Has People In It - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-pj8OtyO2I Also, there's I Am Sophie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c?iamsophie?videos . I'll admit, I haven't sat down and watched all of this, but what I have seen seemed pretty well-done.

Belgian movie Man Bites Dog is presented as a documentary made by a small crew that follows a serial killer. I highly recommend it but it gets very dark and explicit. It's a comedy. e: Trollhunter is another good one. The premise is that a group of students set out to investigate rumours of a bear poacher, and find something altogether different in the woods. It's kinda marketed as a horror movie but it's a comedy too, just incredibly deadpan. My Lovely Horse has a new favorite as of 15:02 on Jan 18, 2021 |

I'll admit, I haven't sat down and watched all of this, but what I have seen seemed pretty well-done. It starts out pretty strong, but it broke for me when it went into anything tech, especially the "avid gamer" playing a poo poo-tier creepypasta game and freaking the gently caress out like she'd never encountered a single edgy romhack or heard of haunted games in her entire life. Also the guy in the star trek shirt who monologs to a stuffed flamingo because the writer apparently couldn't think of a single other way to communicate that he's a lonely nerd who people take advantage of. It's at its best when it's doing regular spoopy poo poo, and it seems like it might still have some story remaining that's been disrupted by everyone having to stay inside forever, so it'll be interesting to see where they go from here. The Saddest Rhino posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NghZz_JS6q8 Noroi is the best found footage movie I've ever watched. Absolutely wonderful. Loved this, also. Very simple, well told, doesn't overstay its welcome. More horror stories should be like this.

Ted the Caver is a first-person "true story" about cave exploration, written in 2001 as a proto-blog (one showcasing accordingly retro web design). There's also a copy on the Wayback Machine if you prefer that the last page links to an intentionally non-existent page 11 instead of just itself, which I think has a teensy bit more punch. I also swear I've read before that the story was inspired by or straight up ripped from some book published in the 80s/90s, but the name escapes me, sorry. Poking around Youtube for more Local 58 style stuff I found Gemini Home Entertainment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyDvpwpRPM4 That in turn led me to the unrelated but also interesting Eventide Media Center: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiTvpTuuAh4 There seems to be a proliferation of these "analog horror" channels, some better than others, so be sure to check the related videos Youtube recommends. Finally, mockumentary The Last Broadcast is a feature length film about a hunt for the mythical Jersey Devil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GwXCyJfPzE It predates Blair Witch by a little bit, and though it's been over a decade since I last saw it, I remember enjoying myself. People in the comments suggest the ending is a letdown, though, so grain of salt, I don't really remember the details. Crackmaster has a new favorite as of 07:23 on Jan 21, 2021 |

This is still one of my favorite short horror stories ever. I think it's because I've been potholing and it was one of the most singularly uncomfortable experiences of my life, that the idea of voluntarily squeezing into natural caves where no one's documented (or could reasonably rescue you if you got hurt) is already terrifying, but I especially love the lack of explanation. It just ends, with no closure or reveal.

Not all found-footage is horror or spoof, as I think The Other Side Of The Wind showcases pretty well. It’s a weird watch despite being a “mockumentary” poking fun at the French New Wave while also showing how difficult Welles could be to work with. The film is cobbled together from footage from Orson Welles’ last production. It was in development hell for over 40 years and when I saw it in ‘18, it was on Netflix. I think it’s worth it if you think you’d find it interesting. I, of course, would pair it with They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, which is the making of flick about The Other Side of the Wind. It’s wild stuff! Treguna Mekoides has a new favorite as of 08:29 on Jan 21, 2021 |

They're at their best when they're just weird and subtle. If you're hankering for more Local 58, or just like spoopy poo poo, these are a reasonably acceptable offering. I have a deep appreciation of the recent-ish Netflix movie, Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein. It features David Harbour as "himself" (David Harbour III), investigating the life of his father (also played by David Harbour) centered around his performance in a televised stage play, titled Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein. It's hard to describe, but it's good imo and also only like 30 minutes long so whatever. It really hits the sweet spot of being a mockumentary that could arguably pass as being a real documentary, but has just enough surrealism to make it questionable.

Possibly only adjacent to this topic, and I'm also sure it's already well known, but I've always loved Look Around You, a comedy show painstakingly imitating the look of 1980s educational TV and dryly presenting ludicrous ideas as scientific fact. Eric Idle's The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash is another great one, presenting itself as a retrospective documentary on legendary Liverpool band the Rutles, a transparent take on the Beatles. It's crammed full of cameos and Beatles in-jokes, and they recorded a ton of "historic" concert and TV footage with cleverly composed songs. I've watched it so much over the years that I genuinely can't anymore because I know the timing of every upcoming joke.

Necromancying this thread to rec a couple of analog horror series! I just watched this one last night: Winter of '83. It's very low budget and a bit cheesy but quite good structurally and generally a fun time. Makes good use of a variety of media types, which I always appreciate in these shows. I've been following the Monument Mythos for a while and it's also a lot of fun. Extremely creepy and surreal alt-history involving horrible abominations inside various US monuments, and the unsettling and awful things that happen to people who came into contact with them. There's a lot of interesting connections among the different stories, and they cover a lot wider period of history than the usual 80s-90s analog horror.
