Accepting anime opens up a lot more kaiju media to you. That recent Gridman anime was pretty good.

The Castlevania anime is really good but the third season bored the hell out of me. I stopped watching halfway through. I hope they bring Dracula back for season 4.

Ugh why does it have to be an anime series

I assumed that by "anime" they meant the studio who does Castlevania because they can seemingly pump out stuff quickly even if the quality goes up and down, so nice to know my instincts were correct there.

That said it's a good show and a better adaptation than I think anyone would have expected. Season 3 was more of a slow burn set up but I'm fine with that given how good the first two were and also the cathedral fight at the end was immensely good.

At least with anime the budget difference between monster and human is zero. I posted before but repeating: somehow the netflix godzilla took ZERO advantage of that fact but maybe others will.

Yea I mean that really was the issue. When I saw that it was a series I was like oh nice, we'll get tons of Godzilla/kaiju action but if anything we got less than in the typical big budget feature film.

It's-a me, motherfucker

Beyond all the Bigs awakend in KotM, this movie shows that there is still a living ecosystem of lesser titans and monsters living in the hollow Earth. A show about humans trying to keep that world from spilling out onto the surface or vice versa could be pretty cool. Maybe they could include the named kaiju briefly during big moments or just glimpses of them resting or chilling for scenery porn. It could be really cool without being ungodly expensive, especially if they use reuse assets from the prior Monsterverse movies.

Note: This is probably something that other Godzilla sites/obsessives have already been talking about, but I hadn't seen it here so I thought I'd share.

My ten year old Godzilla nut has been watching the trailer over and over in regular speed and slow motion. A few minutes ago, he yelled, "Dad! I found proof that Mechagodzilla is disguised as Godzilla!" I walked over to him and after fidgeting around on his iPad to find the right spot he hit play.

I'll be damned.

When Godzilla is in Hong Kong, he charges up for an atomic breath blast and his dorsal scales light up -- head first down his back instead of tail-to-head.

I made a note about the scales in that scene lighting up wrong being a good hint a while back but it could also be other godzilla related fuckery.

I'm fairly confident the Godzilla shots at night in Tokyo(?) are actually Mechagodzilla. The weird robotic spike glows and against Kong are giving it away, I think. That shot of Kong landing an axe hit on Z's face I think will actually be the mechanical reveal. There's a shot from behind the axe of Kong facing actual godzilla on what I'm guessing is the aftermatch of the Mecha encounter.

I would love an all-Mechagodzilla movie if at the end the human characters are like, "wait, then where's the real Godzilla?" and it cuts to an alien spaceship where they've got Godzilla chained up and are extracting DNA with a big computer screen saying PREPARING SUPER SPACE GODZILLA CLONES 1-5 or something like that, then smash cut to a black title screen "Godzilla will return!" and then they lose the rights to make Godzilla movies and that's the end of the story

Theory with no basis other than it makes sense to me - MechaG will be 'grounded' by not being a 400 foot tall solid metal robot, instead it's the skeleton of a long dead Godzilla with mechanical reinforcements. The head of King Ghidorah gets grafted and starts to regenerate, filling out any gaps and covering it with skin. It inherits the traits of the host through DNA in the bones or something because of alien regeneration magic. Whatever.

Only hole is that if it can operate without skin, why would it grow skin in the first place.

Which, amusingly, *is* the story for the Fake Godzilla disguise of '74 MG

Its why he's called a cyborg.

Fun fact- every MechaGodzilla except the 90s one is a cyborg, either technically like 74, or literally. 75 uses a human for his brain, Kiryu is built off of the bones and DNA of the original Godzilla, the anime one converts people into itself for power and such

Heisei MechaGodzilla isn't directly a cyborg, but is based off of cybernetic technology. Specifically, Mecha King Ghidorah

If they want to make people really mad it will be revealed that not only is Godzilla actually Mechagodzilla, but that he had been always in the previous two films and that the only appearance of actual Godzilla would be the bones at the start of the 14 film. It would make no sense, and I for one would be furious.

Original Ultraman then. I just watched it recently for the firs time myself, and it's really good. Very strong classic sci-fi, kinda like old Star Trek. And the next series after Ultraman, Ultraseven, is also great. A bit darker, more violent, really good. And the first series, Ultra Q, is good if you don't want a giant silver man and just want more unique, almost Twilight Zonish plots. Although I should warn you that the first couple episodes are the weakest in the entire series and can put people off.

Basically all three are good and worth your time, but if you just want one in preparation of Shin Ultraman, I strongly recommend Ultraman. It's like 20 bucks on bluray.
