The N64 controller was really good IMO although they should have ditched the left handle and used that cost to make the stick better. Gamecube controller is god tier. After that Nintendo forgot how to make controllers and any of their oem stuff fits in this thread.

But the build quality on third party controllers was just so uniformly poo poo for a very long time it made jokes out of things that might've been okay in an idealized form. I remember when the Weird Controller renaissance happened with Guitar Hero and SFIV and everyone was lollin that Mad Catz was being put in charge of anything. I still have my SFIV Mad Catz stick in a drawer somewhere. I swapped the push buttons immediately, but its a fine piece of kit. I still use the stock joystick.
