Awful Announcing posted:

Ian Eagle has been with CBS since 1998, and according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Eagle will remain with the Tiffany Network for many years to come. Marchand writes that Eagle has signed a long-term deal with the network that keeps him there for the foreseeable future. According to Marchand, CBS keeps Eagle as insurance in case things with NFL/PGA/NCAA Tournament lead announcer Jim Nantz go south.

We told you late last year that Nantz is seeking a raise on a par with Tony Romo. By signing Eagle, who calls multiple sports well (NFL, NBA, college basketball, tennis, golf), CBS can use him as a hedge in case Nantz walks. Eagle could step into the top spot on the NFL and partner with Romo rather easily. Should Nantz remain and decide to cut the NCAA Tournament from his schedule, Eagle can step in as the main play-by-play announcer.

Since 2014, Eagle has been the NFL on CBS’ “B” announcer, calling one postseason game per season either with Dan Fouts or Charles Davis. Next season, Eagle and Davis will call one NFL Wild Card game and one NFL Divisional playoff game.

Eagle is known for elevating his partners, and it’s no secret that his NBA partners like Bill Raftery, Mike Fratello, Jim Spanarkel, Richard Jefferson, and Sarah Kustok all have gone on to work nationally at various networks.

In addition to his work at CBS, Eagle is currently calling the Thursday Night Football on Westwood One Radio, the NBA on TNT, and the Brooklyn Nets on YES. He also calls the French Open for Tennis Channel, and has been used by CBS to call the U.S. Open.

Ian Eagle is great, good for him. He's probably one of the hardest working and busiest broadcasters in the business. I can't find the story but a few years ago someone did a story on his weekly schedule and the number of flights he had to take to cover a bunch of different sporting events in a 7 day period and it was completely insane.

Yeah he's basically the CBS version of Kenny Albert. He's called drat near everything and is very good at all of them.

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
Imagine calling CBS the Tiffany Network and not giving yourself a gigantic wedgie afterwards.

I saw the preview for it and it looked bizarre as hell. Apparently they got permission from Al's estate and family to do it but man it's weird

the reds have a new play by play voice in John Sadak

quote:

New to Cincinnati, Sadak most recently served as a national TV play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports, a national radio play-by-play announcer for Westwood One and as a radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets on WCBS 880. His broadcast work includes the play-by-play of the NFL, NBA, MLB, college football, basketball, and baseball along with almost 15 years in minor league baseball.

“My family and I are beyond thrilled at this tremendous opportunity. Calling Major League Baseball games full-time has been my career and life goal for many years,” said Sadak. “The chance to do so for the Cincinnati Reds, a franchise known for its rich, extensive history and passionate, loyal fanbase, is a dream come true. We can’t wait to immerse ourselves in our new home city and ballpark. Baseball’s legendary Opening Day can’t arrive fast enough.”

Sadak will also be a regular contributor to Reds Live pre- and postgame shows on FOX Sports Ohio and provide fans behind-the-scenes access via social media. Fans can follow Sadak on Twitter @johnsadak and Instagram @John.Sadak.

“John possesses everything we look for in a play-by-play broadcaster and his knowledge of and passion for the game are delivered with an iconic announcer’s voice. He is more than ready to become the full-time voice of a major league team and we are thrilled to give him that opportunity on the telecasts of the Cincinnati Reds,” stated Randy Stephens, Senior Vice President and General Manager of FOX Sports Ohio.

They got actors doing exaggerated versions of each man's voice to tell their side of the story and used deepfake technology to make it look like they were in the room (though they were conspicuously far from the camera and dimly lit).

Honestly I thought even volume II was very scattershot. The issue is there is an infinite number of stories to be told about sports but what was special about the initial run to me of 30 for 30 was directors who were passionate about their given subject. And in Volume 1 not all of them worked either. But by Volume 3 it felt like a conveyor belt of stories that weren't particularly interesting for the most part. What I would like to see about all documentaries, not just sports, is LESS perfunctory docs and more quality. An easy complaint to make from my computer but when we know the highest highs (OJ Made In America) its hard not to want more quality and less random poo poo like I Hate Christian Laettner which should have been a lot better than it is.

My favorite ones are almost all from Series 1 still.

The U, June 17th, 1994, Pony Excess, The Two Escobars, and Hillsborough are probably my favorites.

A while back, either ESPN or NFL Films/Network did a(nother) documentary on Vince Lombardi, and for part of it they used an impersonator to deliver do a lot of his quotes. They mostly filmed him from behind or silhouetted to obscure the face. Al Davis vs the NFL was basically the 2021 version of that same thing, and the results were similarly mixed. I liked the underlying story behind it, but the deep fake stuff felt like a gimmick that could have easily been left out.

The one about the Gretzky trade was the very first one and it sucks so yeah they were pretty inconsistent right from the start. I would say they've definitely become a lot more formulaic over time though, they tend to be a lot closer to the generic HBO sports docs than they used to be
