Dick Pikachu looked visually cool if nothing else. And Justice Smith is a way better protagonist than James Marsden the sad small town cop who wants to go to the city to be a real big boy cop.

I'm not above enjoying a kid's movie, but man Sonic was just the laziest poo poo. I feel terrible for those VFX people forced to work overtime on something that was so disposable and utterly lifeless. At least if the studio left homunculus Sonic in it might have had some ironic charm.

I enjoyed Detective Pikachu, but there were definite scenes of meaningless spectacle, the Torterra garden for instance, that could have been edited out with nothing lost

Sonic was cool because it was a throwback to the kid’s movies of the 90’s, right down to casting Jim Carrey, which is an ingenious and savvy way to make a Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2019. That being said, the post-credits scene gives us a glimpse of a bolder vision and a better movie.

Detective Pikachu was at least weird and took some risks with the property, some of the new designs to translate Pokémon into CGI that can mesh with live action were great. I especially loved Bulbasaur and Ludicolo, though I wouldn’t call it a good movie overall. Sonic I suspect would be considered one of the worst game adaptations ever made if they hadn’t made the design change. It doesn’t do anything to separate itself from the chaff other than that. And Jim Carrey’s performance which is quite good for the script giving him nothing.

Detective Pikachu should have leaned into the weird poo poo harder. Give me more Mewtwo-as-Pokemon-Moses, Dittos that pass for human, more of the "oh by the way this entire area is inhabited by pokemon the size of tectonic plates," etc.

I watched Tenet and Shin Godzilla with my friends (who'd already seen them) this weekend. I'm just going to copy paste my thoughts on Tenet from my Letterboxd review. This poo poo pissed me off and I need to complain about it somewhere. quote:Every Nolan movie seems to start with an interesting science fiction idea and the plot is an afterthought which serves to exploit that idea in interesting ways. This is no more apparent than in Tenet. Anything that doesn't directly showcase the idea of inversion is paid no attention or care at all. Thus you have scenes like the one where one character is describing her abuse at the hands of her husband, which ought to be presented with the gravitas one would expect, but the dialogue is delivered and edited as if the film is embarrassed that it had to include it. Nolan wants to show off the cool sci-fi concept and have it be justified in the script, and hurriedly rushes through the emotional core of the movie to do so. (Doesn't help matters that Nolan again refuses to put any effort into mixing the dialogue, so one must strain to hear what is being said.) It sucks all the tension out of the film. I simply do not care about Mr. Protagonist and his friends because the emotional stakes are not treated with importance by the film, and in this kind of film that's all that really matters.
