It’s the Army equivalent of corporate throwing a pizza party, but when you get there they hand you an egg baby. Also, there’s no pizza.

gently caress that poo poo. My MOS never promoted to E5 in anything resembling a decent time frame (guys I still talk to were averaging 7 years to E5) and the huge majority bailed to contractor jobs after their first enlistment.

Every possible ounce of the E4 mafia strength was summoned when threatened with the curse of the corporal, we all knew what it meant and nobody wanted to deal with that poo poo and no hope of promotion.

BANDAIDS DON'T FIX BULLET HOLES

Sounds like Army is trying to adopt the Corps’s frugality hack of keeping people at E-3/4 for 4-6 years but still making them fill E-5/6 billets.

I was literally told while I was under a Humvee to join a snap formation and then got pinned Corporal right there. Weirdly enough, it was just in time to fill a hole in the DA-6 that someone had left for a CQ NCO that night.

My understanding was that you become a Sergeant a month after completing BLC? Also we got rid of CPLs in the reserves a while ago. I had to demote my best E4 from CPL to SPC when that came down. He earned that poo poo(probably should’ve been an SSG)

I can’t speak for the Guard, but there are still CPLs in the Reserve. My command alone has almost two dozen. Also, promotions are done every odd month for SGT. Getting picked up depends on promotion points and if there’s a vacancy within the maximum travel distance you put on the election of options form, plus a few other business rules.

I was a Corporal for about a year. It meant my supervisors didn't need to worry about giving me developmental counseling each month because I was an NCO, and that I didn't need an NCOER because I was E-4.

EES won't accept NCOERs for E4s. You can plug your CPLs in as E5s, but actually submitting the NCOER apparently causes problems down the line in ways I don't remember because I don't work in S1.

So you either give them monthly counselings like a Specialist or just keep doing quarterly NCOER support forms whatever I've been a Corporal for 3 years and I've got 4 months until I ETS gently caress it

e: forgot the point of the whole thing; in practice, either the monthly counselings or quarterly support forms trail off to zero because you fall in the gaps in the system

We had two corporals in my first line unit, they were stuck on points for several years and I swear I remember one of them bitching about a poo poo NCOER.

This was 04-05 so I imagine many, many things have changed.

I only wore CPL for about a month before I picked up SGT. Which I later gave back when I declined a PLDC (now BLC) date 3 months from my ETS. I expected to get screamed at, but it was all very cordial. They talked to me like an adult. I was happy walking out of there and pinning on the sham shield again.

I ran into a dude who is a person of significant rank/power (currently) that I knew as a captain in the early 2000's. I didn't really give a poo poo and was polite because I was just passing by.

However, after this morning's PT poo poo I remembered the dude more clearly.

This rear end in a top hat was like Torquemada when it came to hunting down gay Soldiers back then. If you did anything that wasn't super macho manly you were going to get called gay (other words were used, but they get you banned on this forum), publicly shamed, and investigated. And if you were actually gay you'd be outed and kicked out.

Real piece of poo poo and I'm not sure what to do now.

Yeah the idea was that it was based on your MOS, but the exercises they chose ended up making it super easy for guys to pass and super hard for women (86% fail rate on the leg tuck).

Do this, and if they REAAALLY feel the need to have a separate MOS-specific "combat test" like the Marines have.

I think the whole leg tuck thing was a compromise for pull-ups in the first place. I think it's supposed to come from ARMY CLIMBING DRILLS® 1 AND 2 which are not great, and every time I've ever done it or seen it done it's been questionable with girls getting ever-so-helpfully spotted by dudes grabbing their asses.

The guard is fun, just happened to check my email and saw an iperms update notification. Apparently I got "promoted" out of my brigade last week. Nobody contacted me, nobody in my chain heard anything, no orders, just a permanent change of assignment in my iperms. Waiting to hear more this week but wtf?

I reported to my assigned section for 3 months before anyone told me I had been transferred to a different unit while deployed. Nobody thought about it until I asked to get paid.

I’m Navy but once after leaving the hospital after a 24 hour shift during a hurricane I went home and collapsed only to be woken up by my then girlfriend who saw like 30 missed calls and messages to tell me that I needed to drive back to the hospital through the storm because everyone needed to stay at the hospital to make sure we weren’t driving back through the storm.

Secretly wonders if re-enlisting in the reserves is a good idea

to add context: I'm waiting to hear after my interview with nurse practitioner school. If accepted I will gather a large amount of debt. The options for student repayment are slim unless you want to work in a very, very rural area for 4 years anyways. Weighing my options, but I have never seen what the MEDCOM side of stuff looks like so I don't know if it's going to be typical army *as I would expect*

What's your MOS? If it's not a slacker MOS you could re-enlist with a new MOS school in the contract (and be a huge slacker).

The most recent deal I saw a guy get was 50,000 in loans paid off for a 6 year enlistment in the reserves. There's also bonuses.

There's also stuff in the reserves where they'll just flat out pay a lot of your school bills every semester as long as you aren't flagged.

50k for the reserves? and I think that a majority of those only cover undergraduate programs. Mine would be a doctoral program.

Also my MOS was 19D, the biggest thing around here oddly enough is either Motor T or PSYOPS.

Medical MOS's in the reserves aren't too bad as everyone, everywhere, has a shortage. Which means you might be assigned to the unit near your home, but if you ever get bored you can take a job somewhere else for a few weeks/months.

Not reserves, but a buddy of mine (who is also about to retire) just took a 9 month stint in a very nice tropical country that the US wants to expand relations with. His job is to basically chill out and do whatever (He's a scuba dude) he wants with no supervision and to get random questions SOUTHCOM wants answered.

There's tons of little jobs all over the world from 3 weeks all the way up to a year and a half if you just want to go somewhere.
