Part 49: Revenge of the Tower of Zosma That's right baby, it's time for round 2 of everyone's favorite dungeon. Marvel at the sights, take in the puzzles, and embrace the special surprise awaiting anyone foolish enough to get all the way to the bottom.

I was expecting it to happen here because it didn't happen in the first run through, but the 30 minute timer on the weak flames didn't disappoint. You can cycle them through a torch to refresh their durations, but it doesn't matter all that much now that you're free of the place.

I greatly enjoyed Mizuti explicitly telling the boss to hold on a moment while they had their personally enlightening conversation.

Part 50: The Illusory Fortress Xelha's sidequest takes us to a new and exciting setting of "inside a book" and uh...well, an attempt was made, I guess...?

Gee Xelha's mother, that is an awfully specific and long oath you have there.

The one upside of the dungeon is that those buggers you fight if you pick the wrong doors can all cough up level 5 spell cards of every element for Xelha and Mizuti, and they go down pretty quickly. Not the worst place to pick up a few extra high-end attack cards.

Part 52: The Plan We've gone through everyone's quests, which means it's time for the main event. And boy, do they have a doozy of a plan to get into Cor Hydrae.
|
# ? Feb 12, 2021 22:01 |
|
Part 53: Cor Hydrae Castle (Part 1) I don't blame anyone who was overwhelmed by how incredible last video's plan was, but don't stop now because we're about to face a foe far scarier than any boss the game can throw at us: The Level Designer.

I'm a big fan of the giant flail-wielding demon who dropped a bundle of straw when you killed it. Truly the embodiment of chaos.

Really how could a JRPG end in anything else except giant lasers and a teleport maze.

# ? Feb 18, 2021 03:55 |

Part 54: Cor Hydrae Castle (Part 2) The second half of Cor Hydrae is about as exciting as the first half, thankfully with 100% less teleporter mazes. And our reward for this is...another rehashed God fight. Thanks game, you're the best.

"Are they going to dump more plot on us?" Fedule bud, at some point you gotta roll with the weird narrative choices in this game. We went through the looking glass long ago. Also I love how doofy those hand enemies look when they're running around on-screen.

Has there ever been an anything where dumping character revelations on the villain at the last second has ever worked well? There's plenty of times where the main character convinces a villain they're doing the wrong thing or breaks through some controlling force just long enough but revealing past secrets just seems to give every villain an excuse to go even crazier.
|
# ? Feb 21, 2021 08:16 |
|
Yeah it always ends in the villain going into full "sunk costs" mode. Especially because it always happens when the villain is in a position of power and a few steps temoved from their plans end, so it would be an incredible anticlimax for then to jist stand down.

Part 55: The Final Battle It's Malpercio! In his Final Form™ no less. It's a hard fight that will stomp you if you're not ready for it, and it's a lot of fun to build the kind of decks that can run the damage race with him. It turns out that Big Numbers™ can in fact be a gimmick once the numbers are big and frequent enough.

Oh hey, Baiten Kaitos, I remember bouncing off of this game several times when I was younger! And the thread is only 4 pages long, so I'm fairly early in it! Oh...oh...or no I'm not... Oh well I guess I'll finally get to see the end for once! Anyways Fedule, I'm so sorry Artix has dragged you through this. Then again I guess he's got to do to others what I did to him with AW:DS.

There's something to be said about having the final boss of your jRPG be its hardest boss, but Super Malpercio is a house. It can do that weakness shift more than once too! Also I think the "final boss gives out a bunch of status ailments" move you're thinking of is Retribution from Mithos in Tales of Symphonia? It's the one that's burned into my brain, at least.

You can do way, waaaaaaaaaaay more than 4k damage with a good card draw. It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure it's possible to crack five digits. This is also the fight to break out the Skull equipment for, if you can manage the Confusion.

Part 56: O Mighty Ocean... And with that, we're done. The ending goes on for way, way too long, the big sendoff scene is completely superfluous, but they nailed the Xelha bit...right up until they didn't, but whatever, it's a JRPG and we all saw that coming from a mile away. But yeah, that's Baten Kaitos. It's rough in a lot of places, and I kinda wish someone would take another crack at a full-fat RPG like this because most of the egregious design kinks are stuff that we've...solved, for lack of a better word here in 2021. But until then, this is what we have to work with, and I love it all the same. Thanks for watching folks.

That bit with Geldoblame right at the end is just straight up one of my favorite parts of the game. It's quite possibly the stupidest thing does, but here we are, fighting the disc 1 chump villain who has...possessed the Earth? Wonderful, 11/10, I love this game with all my heart.

This was certainly an ending I feel like a remake with modern design choices could be good for the game. It has some good choices that were done poorly because of the time it was made. I imagine most of the issues could be fixed

"The Ice Queens of Wazn" is the section of my address book where I keep all of my ex-girlfriends Having seen this all again for the first time in 15-some years, it's maybe not quiiiite as good as I remember it, but I agree with the initial assessment that it does more correct than it does wrong. Give me something I haven't seen before and take a big swing at it. Also yeah they shove a lot into that ending. I've been waiting the entire LP for this update because I felt like I had hallucinated that Geldoblame reveal the first time I saw it, and had to see it again to make sure it was real. On top of everything else, I think all of the End Magnus guardians from the early game referring to Xelha as the "woe-laden child" is supposed to foreshadow that she has some sort of big sacrifice in her future. E: also worth noting that the Geldoblame "fight" has its own unique music track! Again, why is this in here? C-Euro fucked around with this message at 22:22 on Feb 26, 2021 |

That ending is like they wanted a “curtain falls, actors come out and bow” scene, but didn’t have the courage to just do it. Like you both mentioned, why were most of those people even there, let alone all together?

Look, someone went to the trouble of making a giant earthen Geldoblame head. They had to shove it in somewhere.

Jesus Christ, Gibari was voiced by Jeff Gedert? So between that, Richard Hawk from Metal Wolf Chaos and the narrator of Ace Combat 04, just much range does this one dude have anyway? Because NONE of them sound like they’re the same person.

Finally caught up and now I can say I finally know the (somewhat confused) ending to a game I bounced off of several times. Either because I got bored or because the combat started making me go crosseyed. Also loved the Into the Breach reference during the second Zosma run. Perhaps Artix should LP that next! (Not that I'd have any idea how anyone would LP that game.)

So did they just want an excuse for Kalas to not be the one to kill Xehla so here's one more boss fight (that was less dangerous than a regular mob at end game). Because a lot of that ending, as goofy as it was, did manage to work. What a strange game that actually managed to mostly pull it off in a way at the end. A lot of games can actually be pretty good if they just had hours of dungeons shaved off. Glad I saw this one.
