Sing Street is so good. I watched it the first time back to back with The Hunt for the Wilderpeople and it was the greatest double feature I’ve ever done.

I think I just gave up and accepted the goofiness. S3 and S4 get pretty convoluted, but I think they stick the landing. Still, even when it's not great, it's still a lot of fun to watch Tatiana Maslany's Acting Academy while she plays like 15 characters. The most fun of that show is when one of the clones is pretending to be another one of the clones, and you can tell because she has so many subtle character tics for each one.

Season 1 of spartacus ended up being good silly fun but rape being a repeated theme in season 2 is really loving awful

I mean, it was a pretty major theme in S1. Its just presented differently in S2 because its no longer about all the rich and powerful people raping the slaves.

# ? Feb 8, 2021 21:46 |

I think it's that s2 seems more explicit? At least in the house of batiatus rich person gladiator rape orgies
|
# ? Feb 8, 2021 22:05 |

Its been awhile and I definitely know S2 has more overt rape stories, but I also just think S1 is loaded with rape that is often just glossed over as another indignity on the slaves rather than what it is. So the fact that S2-3 actually kind of addresses it feels like arguably an improvement. Also just to be sure, you should be watching the show as: S1: Blood and Sand S2: Gods of the Arena S3: Vengeance S3: War of the Damned Technically Vengeance is "Season 2" but in reality it was the 3rd season produced. Andy Whitfield was sick and they delayed continuing the show to see if he'd recover, so they filmed the Gods of the Arena prequel mini in the interim. But it heavily plays into Vengeance so you should see it first.

when does season 5 of babylon 5 stop sucking rear end?

We're almost done with the new The Tick, and I'll be sad to reach the end of it. I still think Patrick Warburton fits the role better but Peter Serafinowicz is great too. It's made us both so nostalgic for The Venture Bros that I think we're going to go back and rewatch that from beginning to end next.

I started watching Agents of Shield and it's pretty good, fun action sci-fi show with some decent twists and budget for TV level action. I'm in season 4, just got to the Agents of Hydra episode and it's great seeing all of the heel turns for everyone in the framework.

It's pretty cool she got an Emmy for this even though it's not some prestige series with a giant budget or a bunch of heavy-hitting movie actors.

Does B5 seriously only have five seasons? For some reason I thought I remembered it being this gigantic epic when it was airing, and that’s the only thing that kept me from revisiting it. Now that I wiki it, it’s downright approachable. I might throw that one onto my to-do pile sooner rather than later. I do need to mentally steel myself for “LightWave3D: The TV Show” though, that much I remember.

The Deuce, Season 2. God this whole film subplot is gold. Absolutely mad with myself that I slept on this. Also this is my first real David Simon show, though I saw Generation Kill. Skarsgard sank that poo poo for me.

Nah, Generation Kill is great and Skarsgård is good in it. He played Sgt Colbert spot on. It does help I watched this when it aired which was before he became famous (before True Blood). Still I’ve watched GK several times since and loved it. It captures being a Marine perfectly (as a Marine I would know).

I just started watching Letterkenny after having it recommended to me for years. Halfway through the first season and it's a lot of fun. But I think I remember reading that after a couple seasons it turns to absolute poo poo? The original showrunners left or something and the stars of the show decided they could write and do all the other poo poo just as well.

Letterkennys quality does fluctuate over the seasons, but yeah it's a fun show. And so is Ted Lasso, which I'm sure is the best show of 2020. The fact that hannah waddingham was also the shame nun from GoT is mind-blowing.

Antifa Poltergeist posted:Letterkennys quality does fluctuate over the seasons, but yeah it's a fun show. The dips in quality usually seem to be based on who is or isn't available for the season. Sometimes the cast is too big for the show, and sometimes great characters are missing all season or only show up once. But since each season is so short, it doesn't really matter when you're binging it. The weaker seasons are only more glaring when you're waiting 9 months for 6 episodes.

'The Last Narc' on Prime was gripping and awesome. Anyone into stylish, investigative documentaries should check it out. I'm surprised a mainstream American streaming service actually airs it. Wish they had dedicated more time to Jaime earlier in the show. He's a peripheral figure until they drop the bombshell right at the end.

Get ready to hate every single character in the show at one point or another. I like the show but man at times it's just the most perfect example of misery porn. I think the middle few seasons were the worst for this though, the last couple haven't been as bleak.

That's a pity. The second half of S5 is quite good. I'm sure you could google the Centauri arc and find episodes. Garibaldi's arc is also very good. Lennier's "Very Special Episode" is very much a "very special episode" but like B5 it is very prescient where it is a lot more resonant now than it was when it was released, let alone filmed/written. JMS is a grognard who writes villains sympathetically. It's layers of meta, a real "stare at the abyss" situation where he doesn't even realize he is writing a villain when he writes Marcus or Lennier.

I agree with you and I feel most people grade the show on sketch comedy rules. Most of it is garbage but all it takes is one good moment. By those rules, the roundabout scene alone turned S4 from "a complete waste of time" to "amazing". Personally, I've genuinely enjoyed every season while acknowledging highs and lows. Other people see good highs and campy lows in a middling show. Not my perception but it made me see why people like S4 the best because it's peaks in both directions are the highest and the rest is just a middling mess. I tend to like things unironically so that approach has less appeal for me.

I watched the first season of Fargo and it’s pretty good. I didn’t understand all the plot holes though. Like, why was lester’s brother never interviewed and given the chance to say why he didn’t kill the wife? An alibi would be pretty easy to come up with, or just mention that Lester is nuts because of the kidnapping which also happened. I guess you can handwave it off because the police chief was loving inept at his job, but to have that case go to trial without any defense? Or why does Gus Grimly just go straight into Malvo’s house without calling the cops? I guess because he didn’t want his wife at risk and he had to prove himself? Kinda crazy that he goes from someone who can’t pull the trigger to a dude that shoots Malvo like five times.
