It still makes me laugh how in that one episode the Republic pilot asked her if she knew anyone who died on Alderaan.

Uh... like apart from everyone she ever knew or met, I guess?

Well, it's because the show is dumb. Fun, but dumb. You can point to a looot of the writing choices as not standing up to even basic scrutiny, but the show is good at making you not really care.

How can you say The Mandalorian is not a "remember this" type show when it's premise is based on "Hey remember Boba Fett? Here's his armor and people who look like him." Then they actually bring characters back in season 2 in a "Hey remember these guys" move.

I fell off the series hard after the first few episodes and only recently have forced myself through it. It's very strange seeing the advertising and media hype blitz going on for the show when you aren't watching it, then when you go to watch the show I'm expecting something great but I just get lukewarm.

I've enjoyed when they leave the desert planets but they always seem to write an excuse to go back to one eventually.

I think the show is fine, it’s at least something they really needed to do with the franchise which is to actually use the universe more than just the endless Jedi vs Sith thing

And then here comes the Kenobi show where Obi Wan will fight Darth Vader for some reason and it’ll turn out like that dumb fan film remake of their duel in ANH

I do think the show is a "remember this" type show, but I don't think this argument really supports it. Yeah, someone who grew up with the OT and didn't care for the PT and didn't watch much or any of the subsequent media is going to see it as a nostalgia-grab. But anyone under 30 is going to have a vastly different perspective—Mandalorians are not some new thing the show made up to cynically tap into 40 year olds' nostalgia. They're a direct continuation of a long-running story that's unfolded over the past 18 years since Jango Fett popped up.

That may have been a "remember this" choice in AOTC, but the time to be grumpy about that is long, long, long passed. You don't have to care about that storyline or those pieces of media, but like it or not Mandalorians are now a fixture of the Star Wars universe and as legitimate a story to continue as Obi-Wan's or whatever. There are tons of other parts of the show that are leaning hard on nostalgia grabs (like Grogu, like including Boba, etc.), but any Star Wars fan born after 1990 is going to probably care about the cartoons a lot more than the old dudes who are still upset about the prequels.

It actually might have included stuff from a video game script - the 1313 video game that was in development forever was going to have the player character be Boba Fett, and 1313, the Underworld TV series where Fett was going to be a major character, and The Clone Wars cartoon all kept having bits of their plots and concept art shuffled around to each other by Lucas. The Mandalorian stuff from Clone Wars obviously went into Mandalorian and probably some stuff from Underworld and 1313 did too (some stuff in the Solo movie came from 1313, for example).

If you happen to be interested in it, the book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels by Jason Schreier has a chapter on the development and ultimate cancellation of 1313, and more broadly on the final years of LucasArts in general.

The best part of The Mandalorian is it inspiring me to revisit a lot of the westerns and samurai flicks it borrows from, including a bunch I hadn't seen.

A lot of those films have similar tones the show (especially in the first season) but those tones aren't for everyone. The show becomes noticeably weaker when it strays from them, I care zero for Mandalor planetary politics that is pulled from a show I never watched, and they can just solve the current problem of him having the Darksaber instead of Starbuck by having them get married.

Was that ever powerpuff girls?

Powerpuff girls always felt like it's gimmick was being cutesy visuals then having a bunch of discordant awful things happen. like it wasn't happy tree friends or anything but the premise was always like, it's a bunch of cartoon kindergardeners who then meet satan and do this to someone

Or like they make themselves a sister then she just suddenly explodes and dies at the end of the episode.

or their dad meets hilbillies and they apparently rape him, and the joke is how upset he is the kids keep asking him about it.

Like it wasn't a grimdark show, but it seems like it's main source of humor was playing how cute the style was against the things that actually happened. It never felt like unironic happy.

“Disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting” sounds like a solid concept for a show, and isn't that big a leap from what some recent magical girl series have covered already.

Kind of shame its stapled to the PPG brand rather than being it's own thing, but wuddayagonnado?

I guess I'm stumbling over the "disillusioned twentysomethings" thing. It takes way longer to become properly disillusioned. I realize this is a very old person pov but, like, they just stopped being kids. They should wait until they reach 30, THEN we can talk "disillusioned".

What they probably meant was "jaded and snarky" but realized that sounded too much like regular teenagers.
