Teen reunited with pet rooster lost at Alabama Cracker Barrel after Civil War reenactment.
https://www.al.com/news/2021/02/teen-reunited-with-pet-rooster-lost-at-alabama-cracker-barrel-after-civil-war-reenactment.html

quote:

It all started when 18-year-old Thomas Ramsey, a student at Copiah Academy in Gallman, Miss., and founder of the Muddy Rabbits Mess, a 32-member military reenactment group and the largest youth group nationally, was returning from a Civil War reenactment in Springhill, Tenn., and stopped for lunch on Jan. 31 at Cracker Barrel in Cullman. With him was his friend Jonas Patrick and his Buff Orpington rooster, Peep.

Peep is a handsome fellow, in keeping with the standards of this heritage breed of chicken: heavy, with a broad body and low stance and having a “bold, upright and graceful” carriage. He’s been the cock of the walk ever since Ramsey found him on a roadside last summer when he was still a young chick.

Ah,yes, the old TWA terminal at JFK. I used to fly in and out of there on my way to/from college. Gorgeous, but by the late 90s it was pretty clear that it had not been built with the actual future of air travel in mind. It seemed perpetually crowded.

EDIT: Oh poo poo, they turned it into a hotel. I had not heard about that. Pretty awesome.

I got to go through there once as a kid, man the architecture was trippy. There was something really weird about those tubular walkways connecting the terminal to the airport, the curves and lighting were such that it really screwed with your perception of everything. Kind of hard to describe. It's like you couldn't tell exactly how large it was and where the walls ended.

It would have made the perfect set for a live-action Jetsons movie.

Sizzler still exists, you can find their nearest location on their site:
https://www.sizzler.com/

Up until very recently there was a Sizzler near my house, and a woman I was dating insisted that we go there because she hadn't been to one in decades and she was nostalgic.

I said ok but predicted it would be both depressing and disgusting. Turns out I was right!

I never had any nostalgia for Sizzler because I loved Bonanza as a kid, and my Bonanza got turned into an inferior Sizzler.

Nothing more Americana than a buffet steak restaurant named after a Western TV show.

Edit: lol that there were multiple Ponderosa/Bonanza posts while I was writing this (they're the same place).

The Ponderosa Company had an amazing pop art collection that my local art institute purchased back in the late 80's and I wish they'd have them on display more often.

Back in the 80s MTV contacted whoever so they could get an interview with the guy who directed that music video. It turns out that he's black. So when he showed up at the offices of MTV they treated him like poo poo, were incredulous that he even was a director, and basically told him to leave because they weren't going to put him on TV.

You will be the effigy I burn, infused with all the traits that make them the detestable little goblins they are.

Those old motels remind me of going to a wedding in Iowa where the accommodation was a casino. I booked a smokers room since it was significantly cheaper and I figured I'd be getting back from the wedding piss drunk, plus I smoked myself.

Woo boy was that a mistake. It loving stank, and I realized that I didn't smoke nearly enough to deal with that. I should have at least tried to have a cigarette in there, but I was so turned off of them while there.

Nice wedding though, I'd driven like 6 hours from Chicago to attend.

Ninja edit: oh, I'd nearly forgotten that there was a bar nearby in Des Moins named Hessen Haus, which is the German state I now live in. The staff were super interested in hearing about actual Hessen, and relieved to hear that Possmann Apfelwein is the shittiest.

By chain of custody I meant who had the body and when/why and how this impacts the possibility of a mix up. The expanded story he mentions elsewhere does not fill me with confidence.

For me (as a non-American - a Brit, no less) those sorts of scenes are peak Americana. A small rural town somewhere flat and full of corn, cold in winter, hot in summer, one main street lined with independent shops ('Drug Store', 'Bar', 'Merv's Diner', 'Byzewski's Hardware Store', 'Chevron Gas') and a John Deere dealership overlooked by a water tower, lined with blue mailboxes, red fire hydrants and giant cars with too much chrome and fake wood on the side parked to the curb/kerb, with a brick courthouse with a civil war cannon and an American flag on a pole at one end. There's something so neat, snug, prosperous and friendly about such scenes when you see them on sunny days preserved on Kodachrome - almost enough to make you forget the litany of bad poo poo that was around in the 50s and 60s...

Imagine my displeasure when I first went to America and found out that those sorts of main streets haven't existed for about 50 years! The first time I actually found a small town which came close to my stereotype it was in Canada!
