Good on them, Ukrainians are nice people and my only interaction with Ukrainian programmers has been positive.

L-1 requires you to be working for the company outside of the US for at least one year, and they need to then decide they want to transfer you to the US bad enough to deal with all the crap.

if none of those work, you could also marry an american.

Ya this is what I was getting at. There were like a dozen glassdoor reviews ragging on the foreign team as well. All from sales/account managers. Bullet dodged lol. Hope the Ukrainian team gets the respect they deserve someday.

When I was negotiating offer at $newjob, I tried the "refuse to say a number" and it worked for me. I managed to keep it friendly like this:

Early in the process, I said that compensation isn't everything, and I'm sure their range would be where I needed.

Later in the process, I said that I was sure they'd be able to offer market-rate for my skillset and background, then I left that term in their court.

When asked about my current salary, I said only that I was a little underpaid, and that was part of why I was interviewing at $newjob. Then I reminded them that I was sure $newjob would be able to pay market rate.

Then I took their offer and counter-offered for higher base salary and lower RSUs because I never trust that a startup will pan out.

with my current job i said nothing at all

two weeks after starting, the (former) HR person cornered me and said we're not releasing your paycheck until you tell me how much you made at your last job

didnt really care about the consequences at that point so i told em

50% increase job over job, they were kinda pissed

edit: was drinking when i wrote this, removed a redundancy

I’m curious how you handle the ‘I’m walking away from $xxx, xxx in RSUs situation’. is it worthwhile ever bringing that up or do you just figure ‘I have $y vesting over the next few years so I need to increase my salary over that’?

yeah, basically. you don't have to talk about your vesting stock because why are you breaking that down for them anyway?

also, that's what signing bonuses are for

I THINK THAT "PRIMA DONNA" IS "PRE-MADONNA". I MAY BE ILLITERATE.
sign-on works, and so does rsu if they do year by year partial vesting, and find out what their annual bonus/raise percentage is like so you can estimate if you can make it up easily over 1-2 years. It’s also worth finding out if you’ll even be eligible for the upcoming bonus cycle. if not use that as justification for a higher sign-on, rsu, leave, education and/or base

Don't ask me lady, I live in beer
recently changed jobs and had a very insistent "what salary are you expecting" in the phone screen which i dodged with "i have options and bonus etc. so i'd need to see the whole package", he continued with "not wanting to waste everyones time" but i held out. then in the final round with the phone screener and the hiring manager he tried again a couple of times and eventually told him straight "i'm not comfortable answering that"

offer was made at X, a little over my current base which i would've taken for the more interesting work. i emailed back saying i was really excited and it'd be a much easier decision if they could get closer to X + 10% and they came back with X + 8%

how much of an idiot rube am i for sticking with a job? i do a lot of client interaction as part of my day to day and i've seen how dysfunctional and awful a lot of places are, but i know job hopping is the only way to get substantial pay increases these days.

i do genuinely like where i work now and the company is doing fine so i'm not worried about getting laid off or anything, but i also dont want to be hosed if something goes bad five years from now and my resume is just various roles at x for the past decade

i think as long as you don't stop learning things and your compensation is sensible (for whatever definition you choose yourself) you're fine. any place that evaluates the breadth of a candidate's experience solely by the raw # of companies they worked at sounds kind of sucky. i'm not a hiring manager though

but the edge of six figures is downright anemic tech comp for the big markets. if you're in a hub you're probably being severely underpaid, depending on the specific type of computer touching you do.

have you tried asking for a raise? see if you can get a meeting to discuss your compensation relative to your performance and the wider market. don't threaten to leave or anything just make them aware you're aware other places pay better. remind them how good you are. I scored a 25% raise a few months ago doing this. probably still underpaid by a bit but it's a good role and I enjoy it.

start casually applying for jobs in your area / field just to test the waters and see what's out there. when you don't feel at all stressed or compelled is the best time to see what's out there. worst case scenario is you find out that you're paid at about market rate and nothing changes

this is in a medium sized city in the Midwest (I should’ve mentioned this, oops) so yeah, I’m not expecting major market level compensation. glassdoor/whatever data is kinda all over the place though, and I’m in a bit of a niche anyways

they’ve given me a pretty decent raise in the past (a couple years ago) and are good about letting people learn new stuff. sending out resumes/interviewing seems like good advice, I’ll see where that leads

thanks all
