5 is kinda dark for most of the game, but other than that yeah, DQ as a whole is a pretty upbeat series.

The act transitions in 5 were pretty heavy for sure. The rest of the game was just a dude going through life in a DQ world. Pretty upbeat and jolly in general I thought.

I immediately dove in 6 which seems to have a completely different tone throughout the game. I think the contrast has to do with 6 being more about uncovering the mystery. Aside from vocation decision paralysis, I'm really enjoying it. 5 was better than 6 so far though for sure.

Tact is reasonably fun - not much in the way of new concepts but a lot of little things to it to turn knobs on power for those number junkies. It leans more to the DQ Monsters side of things which I appreciate.

If you're willing to spend a little time, it's relatively straightforward to guarantee yourself a good top-end monster like Dragonlord and then use the gacha banner that allows you infinite retries to end up with a team that will get you through a ton of content without additional gacha, or spending money.

I have no intention of paying for stuff so the lure of gatcha games don’t hold me for long but thus far, Dragon Quest Tact is kinda fun. It’s simple and there’s a lot of “oh now I need to farm stuff to upgrade the level cap of this monster” but it’s got that charm and the animations for the monsters are wonderful.

There’s a Dragon Quest 1 event going on and your friends get teleported to the world and it starts out like this:

Idk I feel like IX is a perfectly competent game but yeah it seems incredibly unmemorable and bland even for a series that is pretty bland and plays it super safe.

I think the crappy 3D just made the world feel artificial/uninspired, and the music wasn't especially good was it? I think there was like one theme I liked

Between that and build your own characters (I have always hated this in dragon quest), you can count me as someone who beat the main campaign but honestly can't remember a single region, town, zone, dungeon, or boss

Other than the intro area, mentor krillin with wings, and the last boss which I won't spoil but it was pretty meh. I also remember some big rear end tree but that's like in every RPG

I've been having fun with Dragon Quest Tact and can definitely say it's playable without spending any cash and still fun. The tactics style combat and the DQ spells/abilities combine really well and it's a natural fit.

I'd love to see this expanded into a proper retail release RPG sometime but it's a fun little mobile game too.

Almost always, yes.

Every gacha, or at least every recent gacha, starts out really generous to hook you in. You get enough random draws to get good things, maybe some free fancy characters so you get a taste of the cool stuff you can get if you get lucky. Then the free stuff starts to dry up and if you want more, you either need to grind/wait for weeks to build up the currency, or start spending money. Sometimes this point comes after the player finishes story content (like in Fire Emblem Heroes), other times it doesn't. The other pattern that sometimes happens is that a gacha launches with a really generous system but slowly ramps up the bullshit over time. This is what happened with the SMT gacha game, Dx2, where they ended up halving the rate at which you could pull 5-star demons from the gacha after it had been out for a while.

Both of those tend to create a public buzz that goes, "Yeah, it's a gacha, but it's really generous and you really don't need to spend money at all!" Cut to a few months later, and it's very clear that you do need to spend money if you want to play it like a normal game.

I also find that a lot of gacha games have extremely easy "main story" stuff so that it's technically true that you can complete the main story without spending money, but also you're not really going to get a ton of "gameplay" out of it, either. Then the areas of the game that are tuned to be actually challenging are also tuned for you to have done a lot of gacha pulls to get what you need.

I'm sure there are a few that don't fit what I described--I hear good things about Another Eden and it seems super generous with permanently-added free 5-star characters (like the Persona 5 characters), and I haven't looked at DQ Tact in much detail--but most of them follow that pattern.

You can def whale out for top tier units in Tact, but it's tuned that you can also clear content with lower ranked units too. Like in JP everyone uses the F-tier ghost in their Arena teams.

edit: All of the Battle Road stuff is party locked so you HAVE to use the scrub tier stuff too.

Even worse are the ones where there's 10+ progression mechanics that pit you against other players to get progression items where you will _never_ get the good items because of the existence of whales that are happy to drop a grand on a lovely game or just have "gently caress you, pay us" events.

My cousin's kid called me for money a year ago because he was *so close* to getting a legendary in some game event, he just needed to spend like 30 bucks to get event currency and his mom wisely shot him the gently caress down.

In the rare times I play a phone game, I do a sort of meta game. I get to a point where it's not fun/they want me to pay for the gems and poo poo, and then I stop actually playing. Then I just log in once a day and claim the free gems and poo poo and never play, just hoard them. I'm currently doing this for Fire Emblem Heroes. I have 3,407 orbs, which at the minimum they sell, 3 orbs for $2 comes to about $2,271.

I figure if they ever shut the game down I'll just spend a day using the orbs.

I finally got around to playing the DQ1 remaster or whatever you call it on Switch. It was only $5 and I still like DQ1 for whatever reason. It's short and cute and fun and yeah the endgame grind sucks but you play a phone game on the side or something while you're doing it and it's OK.

I really liked the changes they made. The sprites are OK, the enemy art and backgrounds were really nice, the midi music was a pleasant upgrade, the overall pace of the game and combat were sped up which was nice, and they replaced "But Thou Must!" with something that was actually funny.

Worth $5.

I really want to try the DQ2 remaster at some point. I never finished DQ2 and I feel like an upgraded version might motivate me a little more.

It counts the currency you buy as separate currency from the ones you earn and has separate bought-currency only gachas that guarantee you good units. It's pretty hosed up and people are only praising it because it's still in the new-game honeymoon phase where it's raining bonuses and rewards for playing every day. But the biggest issues with the game is that it's basically thrown out every single positive growth the mobile gacha game scene has seen over the past like decade and offered up people a game on par with some of the worst bamco gundam games; and like those it sells its self to its audience by and large because of the brand name and love of the property while using some really lovely and sinister practices.

Shugojin posted:

You are wrong though. The Game Launch Celebration SP with the guaranteed S rank can ONLY be done with paid gems. It says PAID on the corner and everything. If you try and use it without paid gems it takes you to the screen to buy gems.

DQ Tact is fun but  at anyone who thinks it's generous. Look at the SaGa mobile game, which 6+ months out is still like "hey here's 15000 gems as part of the monthly login bonus, also another few thousand for each event, and so many stamina pots that you'd need to bot to have any hope of using them all." It also has the "after 15 pulls you can pick a banner SS if you didn't get it" while the DQ Tact equivalent is "do 10 pulls and get an S rank, no you don't get to pick which one."

I think someone who ran a data mine figured there's about 43,000 or so gems from login bonuses + events for Feb in Saga Re:Universe.

Stat grinding is, well, grindy, but it's solid. Not amazing or mind-blowing but fun. Characters have various styles with different stat bonuses but your core stats/hp for the character are shared across their styles. You can't have multiple styles of the same character in a party, though, so no running a group of Red+Alkaiser(s) for example.

Yeah for sure stay away from gachas if you have any inclination to gamble. They use the same tricks casinos use. Flashy lights, fomo, disguised 'sales' that aren't really discounts. It's like DQXIs slime time slot machine. It'll just take all your coins and maybe show a few flashy lights.
