Thanks for the feedback. I'd prefer not having to use ios, but I'll keep it in mind. I don't know if I could drop that kind of money on a tablet if the drawing programs or apps are inferior to what I normally use. If tablet apps are only good for sketching or light painting/illustration work are there cheaper alternatives to the ipad? I used to have an old samsung note, but the spen was pretty shite for pressure sensitivity, but it's been a long time since that. Are they any better now?

Clip Studio and Procreate on iOS are not at all inferior to any other platform imo. The pricing model on clip studio is annoying though.

Clip Studio isn't inferior in that it's a straight up port of everything. But its UI was made for the desktop and I find doesn't really lend itself to tablets all that well, unless they've changed it in the last year. But also I am not going to pay a subscription for something I own on the desktop. :/

I think he has done a video on alternatives a while back.

I have recently gotten a cintiq pro at work, but for the first time I’m using it almost exclusively with Windows 10 instead of with a mac. I have run into an issue with Windows Ink and am wondering if anyone has found a fix for this. I either have windows ink enabled in photoshop and can have pressure sensitivity on my brushes, but no right click functionality on the side button of my pen, or vice versa. Obviously both would do wonders for my workflow, but I cannot find a fix online that actually works... help please!

Is the Cintiq really worth it? I've been using an Intuos Pro for like a year now, and I've felt no need to upgrade, what differences are there looking at the drawing in your lap / desk and drawing directly on it, compared to drawing on a tablet and seeing the drawing on your screen?

I'm not a professional but... It's just a preference thing as far as I know. If you don't see the need to change then you save some money and keep a better ergonomic setup. 👍

I need some advice. I’m looking to get into digital art just for my own enjoyment and I’m trying to find a tablet. Most of my experience with drawing has been with charcoal on larger paper so I like the idea of tablets with a larger screen, but the controls on some of the smaller ones seem much better for the price. I’m looking at the four tablets below right now. Anyone have experience with them, or have opinions on tablet size? Looking at getting back into drawing and don't really want to spend more than $100. This is what I already have:
I just tried doing some simple line art in Krita on my iPad 2 connected to my Mac via Duet Display and...the lag just sucks. Am I just better off hand drawing stuff and scanning it in at a high resolution for coloring? The amount of undo involved in trying to draw anything digitally directly is just painful though I could probably put up with it if it's just coloring rather than the actual drawing part.

Trip report: I made the mistake of walking into a store to try out drawing with the latest iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2. It is so much fun!!! Still don't have enough of a budget for that, though I think I could scrape enough together for an older iPad and Apple Pencil. How much of a difference is there if I got say, a 1st or 2nd gen iPad Pro with the 1st gen Apple Pencil? As a plug-in model, you can get a very useable Huion Kamvas 13 for $219, which is a bit above your budget but might be worth looking into or saving up for.

I've gotten them repaired before and it's a pretty easy process, take photos and they'll give you a quote before you commit also to see if it's worth it. They repair them domestically and it's a fast turnaround. In my opinion, a Cintiq is completely worth it--having tried a few other devices, I still think they're top of the pack. The surface of the new Cintiqs is a dream to work on, the anti-glare is fantastic, and the resolution is absurd. Virtually zero parallax. I wouldn't consider anything else a bargain; they compromise on the things that make it comfortable and easy to work. e: To clarify, I feel like the previous two generations of Cintiq really brought the name down quite a bit. There were a few models known for breaking, and they were light and better than the other tablets, but not by such an extent that it justified the price. It felt much more household-artist oriented, which made sense but I think made it harder to differentiate themselves. And I feel Wacom took a cold hard look and told their engineers the newest line had to loving blow poo poo out of the water or they were toast. Luckily, the new line blows poo poo out of the water. I went through the same thing, someone let me try their ipad pro + apple pencil for 5 minutes and I said "Yeah I need one now." I picked up a used one for around $300 on Amazon and couldn't be happier with it as a drawing tool (I use it for literally nothing except Procreate). But that being said I can't answer your question re: iPad Pro vs Air/Normal. I don't know anything about Apple products, this is the only one I own and I bought it blindly because I was shopping for a tablet already and fell in love with it in those first 5 minutes. I have a first-generation iPad Pro 12.9” that I bought used in 2015, it’s still going strong. It’s easily the best digital drawing experience I’ve ever had, and I’ve spent probably 20 years and who knows how many  on different devices and platforms.

If anyone has an ipad and pencil, Astropad just announced their beta for the windows version of their screen sharing software. Not sure how well it works, but I'm going to try it out tonight. Hopefully it works better than the other offerings out there and lets me use my ipad as a cheap cintiq!

I tested it out last night and seems to be better than every other offering I have tried so YMMV. I'm not used to a cintiq so maybe that makes a difference? Seemed pretty snappy. Wired though, didn't test wireless.

IDK it might be the opposite cause in my experience (it's been a while tbf) cintiqs are not the snappiest possible solution. If I ever need to work on projects beyond what my iPad can handle I'll probably get a free trial

Years ago I bought a wacom Intuos tablet (CTH-680) and more or less immediately lost the pen. Searching for a replacement pen yielded confusing results, and I've never used it since. Can anyone who knows what's what point me to where I can find a replacement? Is it really the case that a lost pen on these devices means the device is a brick?

Hey thread, I know absolutely nothing about digital art or digital art tools, but someone close to me draws with a XP-PEN Artist 12, and they've been mentioning wanting something portable to get them out from their desk. So my question is, is there a similar or superior option out there? I figure there must be drawing platforms that are independent laptop units but I have no clue if they're like, any good.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab range is pretty good as well if you want an Android alternative. For Windows, you're pretty much left with the Surface Go as your budget option, and there might be a few other companies doing relatively cheap Windows tablets, but the trade-off for desktop app support is fairly sluggish performance compared to iOS and Android.

New CSP update next week With the addition of Dual Brush, it removes what I believe is the last major hindrance from properly importing PS brushes. Anyone used the Wacom One? It's got a decent sale (from $400 to $300; lowest I've seen it) for Prime Day and I'm tempted. I'm on an Intuos Pro at the moment and for a long time I was eyeing the Cintiqs, but my work's transitioned from illustration heavy to 3d software heavy instead so that's seemed needless, but I'm still drawn a bit to the idea of a screen tablet for computer work.

Has anyone had a good experience with XP-Pen stuff? I thought I'd try one of their tablets and the hardware stuff seems great but the software (at least with windows) has been awful. It's constantly doing things like resetting its express key settings, or changing some mode in clip studio that makes me re do my pressure settings in the middle of drawing, just really obnoxious to use. I'm just wondering if anyone has it working properly with windows and I just have to fiddle with it more or if I should just return it

I'd return it. I've been using Huion stuff for years now with no problems, I'd give one of those a go. I've had mine for 3-5 years now with no issues.
