Cool, thanks for the help. I figured it’s all the same between branches considering it’s governed by the JTR, but I’ve gotten used to nice things in the AF, and wasn’t sure if this was another instance of the USMC eating their own. Sucks for her, because it’s not even a cool TDY. She’s going to like Jacksonville or somewhere to do admin stuff or something. Another instance of never letting your command know you’re good at stuff I guess.

My dummy nephew who I was talking about upthread actually got in, got through boot camp, and is at his first duty station. He's enlisted, and going to refuse the vax because my in-laws all have terminal brain poisoning. Anyone know what they're going to do to him? He's only been in for about a year if that makes any difference.

They haven't come out yet and said they're going to start putting folks out, or bars to enlistment, but I imagine that'll be next.

He'll be fine (aside from being dumb) and probably won't get kicked out. It'd be a colossally stupid move to start separating people just for refusing the vaccine when recruitment and retention are already difficult enough. I'd expect DoD will do something similar to what civilian agencies are doing (and what VA, at least, already does for influenza): everyone must either get vaccinated or request a medical and/or religious exception. Employees granted exception will have to be masked and get tested, but we're not going to fire them. e: and in all likelihood he'll still "voluntarily" get vaccinated anyway. A lot of people decide they'd rather not play this game and get the shot, but that is what is currently in order for vaccine refusals. I can only say what's in division orders. Bar may be incorrect, I can't recall, but flag and initiation of separation is there. Final catch-all is basically "prep all the paperwork, talk to a JAG next"

It’s brutally expensive to recruit, train, and retain good talent in all these technical fields and skills they want to plus up on. Imagine being a Cybersecurity specialist in something like network warfare and oh also your a fully trained and qualified rifleman and 95% of your worth is based on the PT test. loving  at that. The people exist, I’m sure, but goddamn that’s gonna be an expensive play. I’m curious if it’s cheaper to spend and retain than the usual 75%+ churn rate.I can’t imagine a USMC that retains 30% of its first term marines. Let alone anything approaching USAF or even Army levels of retention. If he does this he better be doing it with the buy in of all his other commanding generals because it’s gonna take 8-16 years to really see the fruits of the labor on something like this. And the guys that come after him will have to be as much if not even more sold on the concept. It’s gonna be expensive, but I want to know if it’s more or less expensive than the status quo. (P.S. This is all assuming we have a bit of time before the next big war to make poo poo like this happen)

Most of the really expensive SIGINT people promote really slowly, so a second enlistment for them is gonna be another 4 years of paying an E-3 through maybe 5 for a lot of them. Entry pipeline for lings is something like a quarter of a million+ for two years of training. Seems like it would be cheaper to keep more of them around than constant churn. The Marines are also the most willing to drop people who already have their TS clearance out of the language courses and reclass them into random other dumb jobs instead though. Really inefficient usage.
