There's literally a number and a descriptive range for low, medium and high. It's incredibly easy.

Prior to the Mother Jones article, I had started looking into this topic. There is a wealth of scientific evidence that has been released over the past 20+ years which demonstrates that indoor gas cooking is very bad for air quality and people's health. Most of this evidence up until now has been ignored and the uh "kitchen industrial complex" for lack of a better term has everyone convinced you can't be a real home chef if you don't have gas range with like six burner in it.

Yeah, mine kind of sucks as an actual cooking implement (it was there when I bought the house), but the ease of cleaning and bonus counter space are an upside.

Doyle was sick of writing Sherlock Holmes and killed him in a book (falls off waterfall with Moriarty, same as the 1st RDJ movie). But it led to such an insane fan backlash he was forced to bring him back.

On the air-quality front, at least, the evidence against gas stoves is damning. Although cooking food on any stove produces particulate pollutants, burning gas produces nitrogen dioxide, or NO2,, and sometimes also carbon monoxide, according to Brett Singer, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory who studies indoor air quality. Brief exposures to air with high concentrations of NO2 can lead to coughing and wheezing for people with asthma or other respiratory issues, and prolonged exposure to the gas can contribute to the development of those conditions, according to the EPA. Homes with gas stoves can contain approximately 50 to 400 percent higher concentrations of NO2 than homes with electric stoves, often resulting in levels of indoor air pollution that would be illegal outdoors, according to a recent report by the Rocky Mountain Institute, a sustainability think tank. “NO2 is invisible and odorless, which is one of the reasons it’s gone so unnoticed,” Brady Seals, a lead author on the report, says.

quote:

One of the clearest signals emerging in the scientific literature is the connection between cooking with gas and childhood asthma—a disease suffered by people of color and lower-income groups at much higher rates than the rest of the population. A 2013 meta-analysis of 41 studies found that children living in homes with gas stoves had a 42% higher risk of experiencing asthma symptoms, and, over their lifetime, a 24% increase in the risk of being diagnosed with asthma. That study confirmed, in turn, what a 1992 meta-analysis found: Children exposed to higher levels of indoor NO2 (at an increment “comparable to the increase resulting from exposure to a gas stove”) had an elevated risk of respiratory illness. More recently, a 2018 study from the University of Queensland found that in Australia, where 38% of households rely on gas stoves for cooking, more than 12% of the total burden of childhood asthma was attributable to their use.

quote:

The hazards now have a growing chorus of scientists and public health experts insisting that better and stricter oversight of burning gas indoors—a health threat that has been hiding in plain sight for decades, they say—can no longer be ignored. “It’s fundamental and imperative,” said Jones. “We ought to get up on the rooftops and shout about it.”

The cumulative evidence was enough for the venerable New England Journal of Medicine to publish an editorial in January recommending that “new gas appliances be removed from the market.” It was co-authored by Howard Frumkin, a former director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health, which is responsible for investigating environmental drivers of illness and promulgating guidance about those risk factors.

Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in the story "The Final Problem" because he was tired of writing him, but those were the only stories people wanted so he came up with a convoluted story of his survival and kept writing him.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I feel like I've been espousing the virtues of induction stove tops in like 5 threads, and I don't even own one yet. My plan is to replace my gas stove with induction within the next 5 years though. I'm trying to move my entire house off of natural gas for a couple of reasons. First being climate change, since I'm actually paying for 100% renewable electricity for my house. Second is that my gas bill every month includes like $50 just to delivery the gas, even in the height of summer my gas bill is at least $50. So if I can eliminate all gas appliances, that's $50 that goes towards the slightly higher electricity bill I would have.

Right now I have a gas stove, gas dryer and gas furnace. The furnace will be the toughest one to replace, but my plan is to go to a heat pump system once this furnace fails.

Yeah, this is key for glass stop stoves. Then once or twice a year, just cover the surface in white vinegar and baking soda, then cover with a towel that's been soaked with hot water. Let it sit for fifteen minutes, then wipe it with a cloth and the surface will look brand-new.

Also, a simple handheld razor blade--the kind you can get at any hardware store for 75 cents--and some hot water will work great at removing dried-on gunk and crud. Weiman makes a really good cleaning spray, as well, and it only runs for like five bucks a bottle at Target.

My gripe with glass top stoves is that you really can't use cast iron skillets on them. :argh: That said, I'd happily take the glass top stove I had when I was married over the range that I have in my tiny-rear end kitchen now. I'm pretty sure that drat thing is older than I am; not only is the oven wildly out of calibration (to the point of the actual temperature being 20-25 degrees off from the setting), but only two of the four burners work, too. Makes me glad I'm single, because I'd be embarrassed to cook dinner for someone else on that piece of poo poo.
