lol I think YOSPosters would have been amused at the actual late-night dead-air-filler programming we used to have; the Open University aired a lot of 'TV Lectures / course classes' of impossibly dry and dull subjects, but presented by the very worst dressed and styled humans we managed to breed in the 70s. Oh there were some sights if you put the telly on at 2am.

I don't normally watch entire youtube videos posted on SA but I watched the entirety of the second one without really thinking about it. It was the perfect mix of, soft-spoken voices, goofy 70s and 80s tv effects, and genuinely interesting information.

I wish the BBC would release the tapes of them, or the OU for that matter :sadpeanut:

idk if you've seen connections (the first series) or the day the universe changed, but you should definitely look them up if you haven't. james burke is great and they definitely scratch the itch you've identified.

Depends if you care only about only energy or only emissions or only environmental impacts or some combination of them all.

And of course depends on the brand, like the most expensive, impossible does pretty well

quote:

LCAs should be considered within the broader ecological cost of relying on livestock for meat and dairy. Our LCA methodology compares the potential environmental impacts of Impossible Burger® and conventional, industrial ground beef burger -- from farm field to manufacturing gate. Here are the results per kilogram of frozen, ready-to-ship burger patty:

Compared to conventional ground beef, the Impossible Burger® reduces environmental impacts across every impact category studied in this report -- 87% less water, 96% less land, 89% fewer GHG emissions, and 92% less aquatic pollutants.

As does Beyond’s beef product

quote:

Environmental impact of U.S. beef production was drawn from an existing LCA study commissioned by the National Cattleman’s Beef Association (Thoma et al., 2017). The Beyond Burger LCA was evaluated using the same impact assessment methods used in the U.S. beef study.

Based on a comparative assessment of the current Beyond Burger production system with the 2017 beef LCA by Thoma et al, the Beyond Burger generates 90% less greenhouse gas emissions, requires 46% less energy, has >99% less impact on water scarcity and 93% less impact on land use than a ¼ pound of U.S. beef.

but being better than beef is pretty easy. Looks like when compared to other meats they still do well but not as well

quote:

In comparing specific products, it was found that consuming the MorningStar Farms® veggie products, in comparison to a comparable beef, pork or chicken product, results in a reduction ranging from a few percent (considered an indeterminate result) to in some cases more than 90% reduction, across the full product life cycle, depending on the products compared and the environmental indicator in question. Comparison of MorningStar Farms® veggie products to beef products generally result in the most extreme benefits (often in the range of 80% or 90% improvement or more across environmental impact metrics), with the results for pork and chicken products ranging from 15% (in the case of the Resource Consumption comparison with breaded chicken patties) to a more than 75% improvement (in the case of the Water Use comparison with pork sausage patties), when compared on a weight basis. A sensitivity analysis examined comparison based on other units such calories or protein content and found the results to be similar
