I will admit, that Blade 2 is the movie that turned me on to Donnie Yen. At the time, i was mostly mad for Jackie Chan and hadn't moved beyond him. But then i saw Blade 2, and thought, holy gently caress, who is this guy- he fucken rules! Narzack fucked around with this message at 19:41 on Feb 14, 2021 |

According to wikipedia he almost went bankrupt in the late 90s, take that as you will.

Would he really go back to just being a choreographer? In Hong Kong, he was a star. In Hollywood, he was some kung fu guy who wasn't Jet Li or Jackie Chan. And Jet Li was just some guy who wasn't Jackie Chan and couldn't tell jokes. Even at the time, when you could track down HK action films through amazon or ebay or whatever, it was really loving hard to find Yen's films, certainly compared to Li and Chan. If memory serves, he hadn't even really hit his stride in Hong Kong at the time. Or certainly hadn't peaked.

Donnie Yen spent over a decade trying to make it happen in HK to limited success. He just came in late to the Golden Age and was upstaged by Jet Li when it came to the big hero roles, the funny stuff was for Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung/Stephen Chow, and the big wuxia wire work could even be done by non-martial artists. His best outings ended up being films where he played villain like Once Upon a Time in China 2/New Dragon Inn or second bill like Iron Monkey/Wing Chun, and as the HK film industry starts to collapse in the mid-90's he just ends up doing a bunch of nonsense nobody really cared for. His directing output also all came on the wrong side of 90's HK. But like a lot of HK success stories he just kept plugging away, he always worked and was always liked by the the right people in the industry, so as the HK film industry started to re-imagine itself after the millennium, and both Jackie Chan and Jet Li were sort out of there, there was suddenly space for Donnie Yen type of martial arts( and acting quality). Like the two films that turned him into a big deal before Ip Man(2008) turned into a mega star, are SPL(2005) and Flashpoint(2007), and they are both films that you wouldn't really see made pre-handover. Sleeker more sanitized(gentrified?) productions, focus on procedure and grounded storytelling, more emphasis on how real, fresh(just look at that german suplex!) and practical the choreography is.

Yea my first exposure to Donnie Yen was Iron Monkey, and he wasn't the lead role in that even though his part was very memorable. So when Blade 2 came along I knew vaguely who he was but then Blade 2 didn't really turn into anything big for his career so I kinda forgot about him again. Ip Man is what really opened my eyes, and that's when I went back and discovered the stuff he'd been doing in the few years before that like SPL and Flashpoint. Ip Man really shot him into the stratosphere that way where all of the sudden he was truly a world famous martial arts icon. Hard to say what his legacy would be without Ip Man.

I've a big soft spot for some of the "pre-fame" Donnie Yen police-fu procedurals. He used to allocate energy to his facial muscles back then! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JelWs5Taia4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k2NnAHTrtY&t=485s

I haven't seen flashpoint, but I really liked kung fu jungle aka kung fu killer. It's a pretty simple movie but the fights landed just right for me, and after so many historical martial arts movies I appreciated something more modern Also where's the love for the Yen vs Li fight that opens Hero, one of the prettiest movies ever made with a ton of gorgeous actors/actresses mastershakeman fucked around with this message at 16:58 on Feb 15, 2021 |

Three classics this week. Universal Soldier (1992) - 3/5, Amazon Prime, Rewatch Wish they still made them like this. Everything is so cool, the practical effects are great, the action rules. Great atmosphere at the beginning and end. Only drawback is that the "road trip" middle part drags a little. Highlander (1986) - 3/5, Amazon Prime "protect ya neck" -the highlander The Man from Nowhere (2010) - 3/5, Amazon Prime While it ran a little long and the action could have used fewer cuts, The Man from Nowhere does kick rear end. Won Bin is a badass and Thanayong Wongtrakul is a very menacing heavy. The action set pieces are very well done. Story is a big-time downer but that's what you get when you're watching a revenge-type action movie.

Definitely agree about Universal Soldier, I love the first act and the last act but it really drags pretty bad in the middle there. And if you like The Man From Nowhere make sure you check out Safe, with Jason Statham. It's basically the same premise just with Statham.

I'll include my review in my standard dump at some point but the Korean movie The Swordsman came out on digital yesterday and it is absolutely worth spending $5 and going out of your way to see. The action is great. https://twitter.com/TimesSqKungFu/status/1357522946886152193

Also because I'm dumb/blind I'll note that the bad guy in The Swordsman is Joe Taslim from The Raid/Warrior/F&F6/The Night Comes for Us, and he is extremely good in it.

I know it’s not an action movie and I’m not sure if this has been discussed but I finally was able to go through Banshee and I really enjoyed that show. The fights are brutal but it’s a lot of fun. It’s like Cinemax took a softcore porn movie and added good fight scenes to it.

This scene fascinates me; it's like a stage play. The martial arts choreography is legit, characters are dying, but they're not using any special or visual effects to make it look gory at all. Just some red dye on the clothing to show that someone took a lethal blow.
