Edit: For anyone wondering how Roswaal is alive after 400 years, only the non-adapted WN reveals this: (I return by post-) Roswaal has been body-hopping descendants of his so he could continue simping for Echidna's revival. The original Roswaal A is now in his 12th generation body, Roswaal L. He's also stupid rich because of this. Grouchio fucked around with this message at 21:24 on Feb 17, 2021 |

Modern-day Roswaal is essentially wearing the same garb as Hector, except with a more colorful palette and some extra flair. Also, hey, there you go, Melancholy.

For all her talk about being an evil witch that occasionally does good things, it seems like it's more like she a good witch that occasionally does evil things.

I guess we finally know what the masculine form of "witch" is. Though we're still no closer to knowing what a witch is. Echidna seems to just be a normal (if skilled) magician, but some of the others clearly had "powers".

They seem to be putting a lot of effort into hiding her eyes, which is really weird since it's not like we don't know what Echidna looks like.

The big reveal is that she actually doesn't have bushy eyelashes and she just wishes she does which is why her soul has them.

This story is told from the perspective of Ryuzu Meyer, who saw Echidna as both a maternal figure and savior. It could be she was never able to look Echidna in the eyes out of respect and meekness so any of her memories wouldn't include them.

Zetsubou-san posted:i hope we escape from the land of endless flashbacks soon Well, there's still 5 - 6 episodes left. And I'm guessing now that the confrontation with Roswaal and Emilia's trials are over, we're going into the final stretch of everything starting to unravel. My concern is so much poo poo was "revealed" this loop that it's going to be a kick in the balls when the inevitable final death happens, booting Subaru back to pre-Otto punch. I wouldn't be surprised if after everything seems to be resolved, the last bit of info is revealed that allows Subaru to "complete" this loop by ending this episode's conversation with Roswaal differently. There's been too much character development for the non-Subaru characters for it to be undone like that at this point.

Same. I suspect the next time Subaru dies it's probably after they've already left the Sanctuary and his save point is to that.

You know what, in the past I always felt a little annoyed with all the extra plot stuff that seemed to be part of the novelizations, but either cut out completely in the anime or at least glossed over. I felt like by only watching the anime, I was missing out of interesting parts of the story. Like the anime was the stripped down, cliffnotes version. But, I think I actually LIKE how we lose out on so much from the LN/WN in the anime adaptation. It creates such an excellent "wait what the gently caress is going on" feeling, like there's all this mysterious stuff happening just off screen that's really hard to keep track of... but unlike something like Lost or whatever, all those questions actually do have answers and the threads tie together in a meaningful way. And I can go back and look for little details like what you mention, that I may have missed, and... they'll actually be there! Like drat this was just such a good episode. The confrontation with Ram and Roswaal was just so drat good. Also Roswaal's voice actor continues to be a national treasure.

It's the third episode of this cour, 8 minutes in. Subaru stabs Garfiel with the gem Frederica gave him and Emilia. Garfiel returns to human form and recognizes it as his sister's gem. Subaru then says there might be a really hungry cat inside, and Puck answers that's all he can do to help. This must be some Mandela effect stuff for you.

that scene is also Emilia explicitly declaring that she doesn't need her fantasies realized and just seeing them was enough (and by all appearances actually meaning it) in front of the Witch of Greed

Emilia's entire schtick re: Echidna since restarting the trials has been to completely reject her while carrying a smile. Seeing this from a person with the same face as the one who murdered you when you're used to being the grand chessmaster of manipulation is going to cause some emotional backlash.

Did the anime just leave out any explanation for why Emilia was raised the way she was, or is that something not revealed until later in the story? It feels like she has a real case of the Subarus where she doesn’t try to gain any useful understanding about the world around her or her place in it.

emelia hasn't really had a chance to ask someone, and the only person she could ask has spent like the entire time telling emelia that she can't stand her so the only character we've seen her interact with at all who isn't likely "younger" than her is echidna. maybe roswaal but he didn't know Fortuna or the forest elves if he was around.

I don’t need her to pull out a list of prepared questions for Echidna, I just wanted to see some indication that she thinks her past could be important and that she should figure part of it out so her new family isn’t all murdered in the same way.
