The company that makes Red Hot Riplets also made Pork Steak BBQ chips. I don't know if they were only available in St Louis area, and they were an acquired taste, but I really miss those.

I can believe he personally didn't know what it looked like (and clearly, a lot of people didn't either, judging by the segment). Kinda surprised they didn't do more than a surface research on it, though - the google images search doesn't give a lot of official search results, but it's not exactly hidden either.

e: i think the actual reveal is that the mascot is now bald

That's a different costume. The gloves only have 3 fingers and they're trying to get a more chibi look there, whereas the new costume looks just like a normal regular human with normal hands and eyebrows mounted on springs.

Also, this may be some kind of larger rebranding because their new mascot has a solid black mustache instead of brown and lined, which I noticed on the pringles twitter right around when the video came out, but if it was something actually coordinated with LWT I would kinda expect...more.

The horrible price we pay for jokingly acting all serious about simplistic advertising characters is that then those characters start developing into something you have to start keeping track of.

You're all missing the point: we still don't know what Mr. P's body looks like.

All we know is that it can be stuffed into a costume that would fit any humanoid, and he has enough extremities that he can at least simulate having four articulated limbs.

There could be anything under there.

Ok I have a question about an older show: On a plane ride back in may 2015, Last Week Tonight was on the seatback media device. I hadn't watched much of it back then, so I was curious but even though it was on a rather crowded plane, they opted to leave it fully uncensored. I remember having to turn it off because it had full frontal nudity though I forgot the context. Which episode was this?

Sadly this has been known and worried about for a while. Something they sorta touched on but didn’t connect is that white China’s rapid expansion over the last 20 years they have devastated tons of eco systems there. Think if the Industrial Revolution and then post WWII suburban expansion all happened in a 20-30 year period. To make matters worse you often have subsistence farmers living close to normal working families. Or massive industrial farms near residential areas. In much of Asia there is little regulation and a ton of exposure risk.

Basically it is a ticking time bomb unless we rethink how to do much of our society. In the next few years lab grown meat is going to economically viable and will likely cause the need and demand of livestock to plummet which will hopefully aide in this somewhat, but there are so many other vectors that it is amazing we are still alive now.

Has there actually been some progress on this or is it the same Betteridge's law "will we all be eating lab-grown meat in ten years?" bullshit that's been repeated every time there's been a slow news week for the past twenty years?

Yeah about a year ago a company had a big breakthrough with it and got cleared to start selling into to the public, granted only in Singapore. Good Meat I think is the name. I think they only have chicken right now but beef options are on the way.

The lab grown or “cultured” meat will likely replace all of the plant based options that are popular now as well as most if not all of the cheaper meat options. You will likely still see “real” meat exist but by and large it will be more expensive and used for specialized dishes/purposes.

The biggest hurdles right now from what I understand is bringing the tech to scale, which will take a serious investment of money, and getting the clearances from Governments to sell it.

I mean, we're not done dying from this one. Everyone is patting themselves on the back that the US has the lowest COVID cases in half a year like it has nothing to do with winter weather shutting down most testing facilities and locking people in their homes because businesses shut down.

A good book that touches on the meat-packing industry, but isn't about just that, is Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.

Meat packing...I think they are top-5 mortality increases since the pandemic. Line cooks also at the top.
