I actually really like Ammonia Avenue, one of their later records, but I will absolutely concede that it's the softest of soft rock. It makes Bread sound hard.

I like every ABBA song I've ever heard, but I haven't heard much. Are the albums worth digging into, or is a greatest hits collection enough?

The question is are you comfortable not having the complete ABBA discography at your fingertips?

If you are, both Gold compilations would do you well. There's a lot of good tracks on the second Gold one that would suck not to have, like the Visitors.

If you like those, you'll almost certainly like a number of their other singles. They had a lot of them, and they were absolutely everywhere in the first half of the eighties.

I'd suggest a singles comp, but Greatest Hits 1 is missing some of the best stuff, and if you combine it with Greatest Hits 2 to get at it, there's a whole lot of unnecessary nonsense added in.

Their albums inevitably sag a bit in the middle, but there's a bunch of good songs there, so...

Infinity (1978), Escape (1981), and Frontiers (1983) are the three albums you want (Escape most prominently - five of the ten songs on it are among their biggest hits), the rest of their records are mostly from their early quasi-prog-rock days or are generic mush. Add the singles Only the Young, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' and Any Way You Want It (and maybe Only Solutions from Tron) to those three LPs and you've basically got as much Journey as anyone could possibly want.

And if that's still not enough, Steve Perry's first solo album is okay and Oh Sherrie and Foolish Heart are the two singles off it worth hearing

You may or may not like it, but the early pre-Steve Perry journey when it was mostly just guys from Santana minus Carlos is kinda ok. Less corporate rock/more prog or wimpy jazz fusion than later journey. Try the self titled if you’re interested.

Feeling That Way is a cool song too if you like Chicago ripoffs. Gregg Rolie was a handsome man

Journey are in general an insufferable band, but if I was forced to pick 2 songs by them as my only music consumption for the rest of time, I guess I'd be OK with "Wheel In The Sky" and "Who's Crying Now"

This is the "Where do I start with ?" thread, not the "Where do I end with ? on a desert island", isn't it?

Anyway, Jane's Addiction? I only know Been Caught Stealing, but they must have some other noteworthy stuff.

The "meat" of the band are very much Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual. I think they're both *fantastic* albums -- if you dig those, there's a number of live releases and b-sides and the like.

I'd say Nothing's Shocking has a more "experimental" feel to it, while Ritual definitely sounds a little more commercial, but not necessarily in a bad way.

Awesome, thanks to both of you. The instability and band-members-swapping among bands from L.A. is interesting to me, and the Jane's Addiction / Porno for Pyros story is a great example (I've also recently been reading about Tool / A Perfect Circle and Rage Against the Machine / Audioslave). The side-effect of a wikipedia dive through these bands is I get to listen to a bunch of songs I haven't heard for years while I'm procrastinating at work.

Lipstick Apathy
Maynard and Danny jamming live with Rage on Public Enemy always hits.

Also they all did a cover of "Doctor Love" by Kiss, pretty sure it's Maynard, Tom Morello, Timmy C and someone from Porno for Pyros and it is a total bop, and I am not a massive Kiss Fan.

Edit I'm wrong it's Billy Gould and Brad Wilk!

They've got kind of an intimidatingly large discography, and I'm not sure where to dig in. I started listening to Hissing Fauna today at work, and am digging that so far. Otherwise the only other material I'm familiar with is the song "Let's Do Everything for the First Time," which I adore.

I was hardcore on them through Skeletal Lamping, and then kind of dropped off. You can’t go wrong with Satanic Panic in the Attic, Sundlandic Twins, and Hissing Fauna.

Live at the Apollo vol 1 is his earlier stuff that you might not be as familiar with, but it’s good. Vol 2 is later on and has a lot of his hits and more funk. If you had to pick one, I might go with Vol 2 since it is bigger and a little more comprehensive, but both together are a good starting point.

Nirvana had all of three studio albums. Nevermind or In Utero are probably where anyone starts. If you dislike one, I don't think the other will convince you.

With live albums and compilations, everything issued after the 90s strikes me as an after-the-fact cash-in. If you like Nirvana you'll at least want to give the unplugged one and Incesticide a spin, some really good stuff on there.

They're like Joy Division: legendary status, if you really really like them you can go in almost infinitely deep with unreleased takes and demos and B-sides, but not actually all that much output in their time.

This actually made me think of Joy Division, a band I've heard one fantastic song of but nothing else. What's the best album to start with them? Also I very recently saw the video your avatar is from because of your avatar so thanks for that as well.

Edit: Thanks for all the tips. I should've probably checked before asking about Nirvana and Joy Division, I had no idea they had five albums total between them, I just meant to ask about foo fighters and the rest were kind of add-ons.

Nevermind was the album that killed hair metal. If you only listen to one recording from Nirvana, that's the one to go with. In Utero probably would've had a similar effect if they released it first, Bleach is an underrated album, and if you really want more Unplugged and Incesticide are the best choices.

For the Foo Fighters, just go in chronological order and stop when you lose interest.

For Nirvana, if you like live music, absolutely check out Unplugged, as it’s fantastic and highly regarded for a reason. Live at Reading is also very good for how they normally sounded in concert.

Foo Fighters' Colour and the Shape is my all time favorite album, and the first CD I bought myself. You can go back to the first if you like it, and want a bit heavier. Go chronological until Sonic Highways. Concrete and Gold was a letdown, and sadly I still have not checked out the album, that came out a few weeks ago. Their albums wane and ebb, but Wasting Light was an amazing comeback. Sonic Highways was also made with an HBO TV series, an episode per song written in and preformed in various parts of the USA, and is worth watching for local music history.

As it happens I posted about Joy Division previously and I'd still say the same:

My Lovely Horse posted:

Unknown Pleasures is as good a point to jump in as any. It's iconic, easy to procure, and if you don't like Unknown Pleasures you won't like much of what else Joy Division have to offer.

If you do, get Closer and a Best Of collection like Substance or the 2008 Best Of Joy Division. If you're still hungry for more then, go on Discogs and see what you're missing from the early singles, cause you'll be 90% of the way to a complete collection. Unless you want to get deep into like alternate takes and demos but eeeh (although the TV version of She's Lost Control, from a show named Something Else, is extremely good, check that out on youtube).

One slightly obscure release is a self-titled compilation from when they named themselves Warsaw. It's more straight punk than their later typical sound but there's good stuff on there.
One thing to note, a lot of the iconic Joy Division stuff is in fact in singles. Also if your one fantastic song is Love Will Tear Us Apart, you're in for a surprise with how bleak the rest of their material is.
