Guesses based on episode 7 Agatha created the hex as a way to drain power/energy from the inhabitants as well as Wanda. Wanda losing her powers would explain the glitches. Not sure what book is shown in the basement but it might be a way to 'feed' or release Nightmare and lead into the Doctor Strange sequel.
