I had more fun with Heroes than SA2, but Heroes simply stopped working in a spectacular way where the on rails section would not complete after six or seven re-attempts so I was forced to stop playing whereas SA2 was just rather shrug and I got bored. Watching Cybershell play SA2 in the video where he did the two retro engine games was more fun than either.

As a kid I played Sonic Adventure 2 religiously and eventually got every single emblem after 100+ hours and I enjoyed every second of it. I then attempted to do the same thing with Sonic Heroes when it came out and I actually got about 60% of the way through all the emblems before I realized I just wasn't having fun and I never touched the game again.

So yeah not exactly onboard even with the notion that Heroes vs SA2 is a "debate". Fortunately for Heroes it tends to escape a lot of ire from the community because Sonic 06 continues to exist.

Heroes mostly got the tone right compared to SA2, Shadow, 06, Forces etc. It has some good points and plenty of fine ideas. It just doesn't work properly at all.

It's for that I wish Sega did some proper remakes. Heroes is flawed but immensely fixable.

Honestly, Heroes didn’t have enough story for me. Coming after SA2 which had a (relatively) more detailed story, it set up some promising premises that I was excited to see as a kid. Shadow’s back? He might be a robot? Metal Sonic is absorbing people’s powers? With 12 characters there must be a lot of plot to cover!

And everything was barely touched on in a handful of quick cutscenes with literal preschool level dialogue. My disappointment was palpable.

I like lighthearted Sonic. Colors and Unleashed were great and I want to see more like them. But in an ideal world where they wouldn’t gently caress it up, I’d like to see some Adventure style plots/settings too.

Heroes just felt like a downgrade of the Sonic/Shadow stages of SA2.

Like, the concept almost works, I can see a fun game where you're swapping between three characters to quickly and stylishly deal with the situation, but Heroes just more often felt clunky and character swapping felt like a nuisance.

SA2 also feels like actually did something more meaningful with the Hero/Dark thing then Heroes did with Teams. The fact Heroes makes you play through its pretty mediocre game 4 times to get the last story is a pretty big mark against it IMO.

Thinking about it now, SA2 has a relatively well-split plot between the Hero and Dark stories, you get to see the overlap of course but also what each side is planning/dealing with when the other side isn't around, and you even get different versions of scenes depending on what side you're on, like only the Hero side gets the scene where Sonic uses Chaos Control to not die, and then later him explaining that to Shadow isn't in the Dark story scene before they fight for the last time. In Heroes they tried to do the same thing but with even less plot and now instead of two sides there are FOUR and basically nothing happens in any of them, and you don't really gain any additional context from playing the other stories other than Team Dark giving you some vague hints as to what Shadow might be. Hell, nobody even reacts to Shadow being alive when you fight Team Dark as Team Sonic, they're just like "oh hey it's this guy let's beat him up"

EDIT: Huh writing this all out now made me realize this is similar to how I felt with Sonic Forces: neat ideas, very bad execution and a plot that goes nowhere. Metal Sonic being back is really interesting, but all he's doing is...pretending to be Eggman and then you fight him as a big monster.

heroes is fine as long as you're not in the casino levels because the pinball controls are nonsensical. an unambitious and padded game made while sega was rapidly reconfiguring itself. the most obnoxious thing to me was just that power characters are given too much to do (including flight for some reason??)

I agree, Heroes' best moments are when you feel like you're playing a Character Action game with your team, but for platforming instead of (just) combat.

It's more because they seem to be rabid Sega fans over there, based on SASRT. Though they did Snake Pass and Sackboy, both of which are solid to excellent platformers.

They did LittleBigPlanet 3 and more recently, Sackboy's Big Adventure. Those games are ridiculously floaty, but they seem to have inherited that from the first two games that they didn't develop.

God 16 year old me was not there for sonic heroes tone and story. I hated that they brought shadow back from the dead and then did nothing with him.

Looking back on it now with ironic fondness for sonic's edgy period Heroes really sticks out, they tried to dial it back a lot and make something for a younger audience, but still hedged their bets by making it a continuation of the previous games rather than its own thing.

For me it felt like I'd put on an episode of the teletubbies instead of the cool anime I wanted to watch. That tails voice acting was something.

First time I regretted preordering a game (first time I prordered anything too, should have learned the lesson then and there lol) although I did play long enough to clear the game twice.

The visuals are kinda plastic looking but I'm never disapointed to see bingo highway or seaside hill turn up in team sonic racing. The jungle level is just ugly though, god I hated that place and those loving black frogs.

I'll give Sonic Heroes one thing, it has some of the most creative stage themes and gimmicks in the entire series. Grand Metropolis's futuristic F-Zero style high-rises, Frog Forest and it's interesting fusion of Mushroom Hill and Green Forest, everything in Hang Castle/Mystic Mansion. It's a shame the other half of the levels are "Green Hill/Emerald Coast again", "Bullshit Casino stage", "Even more bullshit train/rail stage" (also the two worst stages in the mainline franchise, fight me) and "Sky Deck except no fun allowed"

The Knux/Rouge stages are just awful unless you've played them like ten times and know the locations, coming in fresh it's just dogshit

Speed stages are the only good ones and because it's SA2 they're buggy as hell
