Yeah it's odd. But they are not just floating on whale oil. They needed a bank loan some years back, then they got investors, and I'm not sure how many times you can pull that trick and still have nothing to show for it. I won't bother predicting when this collapses because history shows that it's impossible to tell. But the fact that they keep on trucking is not an indication of progress, or success, it's just an indication that really stupid people are still shoveling money into the furnace. I suspect, with the amount of money we're talking about, and the incredible burn rate due to ludicrous unnecessary expenses to make CIG look like a game development studio, that the end will be swift and sudden. Chris is never getting his 10 million copies sold, he's never getting millions of dollars in residual monthly income from subscribers. The money they're going to get is the money they've already gotten. If they needed bank loans and investors to stay afloat, then whales alone won't be enough to keep the lights on, even if they do a Tier-0 release.

"Release" date is going to be a cut and run, followed by CIG servers going dark, followed by petitions by the community to release the code so they can run their own servers, just like we've seen hundreds of times before. And the backers will be howling into the void as Chris wanders off to his next grift.

The Corporate octopus will do anything to find fresh cash to sustain itself. This is especially true for shady lifestyle companies that don't produce poo poo.

I love how their goalposts are getting more and more desperate. Especially since ED will have stuff like lounges and bars - with barmans likely functioning better than SC's tier 0 (and 1 and 2 and possibly more, while we're at it).

In a decade all SC will have left over ED will be argon levels and pooping mechanics.

It reminds me of the COD infinite warfare single player campaign where the first time you deploy to a mission you walk from the ships bridge through the ship, take a elevator down to the flight deck walk across it while mechs and trucks full of missiles fly by and then you get to your ship and do a pre flight check with the crew ect before blasting of into space.

Next mission they just warp you into the cockpit ready to blast of because that poo poo is only interesting one time.

If Arma 4 hypothetically came out a few years ago and looked like that I would say "this game looks adequate, I don't have any particular issues with how this game looks."

I think you have to be holding out some serious hope for this game (and be in for a lot of money) to think it looks better than adequate for a yet-to-be released in 2021 though.

Nah, it's totally justified. I'm so sick of this "joking" that (heterosexual) relationships are supposed to be some kind of antagonistic conflict where every interaction is some way of gaining superiority in the relationship.
It's like the ultimate confluence of boomer humor and "are the straights okay" energy.

One must be in a weird position if your relationship makes other people question whether you even like your spouse y'know? There's tons of other factors of course but can you really be considered to be respectful of your SO and the relationship itself if you're hiding things that you know would be a betrayal of the other person in the relationship?
What a hosed up way of living.

Time has shown us before that games which focus TOO much on being super specific and hardcore fidelitious don't last long once the honeymoon phase is over

I'm thinking of Hellion specifically, which was VERY unforgiving and modelled everything you could ever want re: space and vaccum and such

It never made it out of early access , as far as most people were concerned. Everyone that was going to bought it in the first 1-3 years after it launched in 2017, and then they called an end of development in 2019 stating there was no more income and couldn't afford to keep the servers up

March 2020 they officially disbanded the dev team and that's the end of that story.

What I'm trying to say is, the same is / will happen with SC , no matter how good a game it turns out to be.

Whoever said 90% of the people who want to play the game have already bought it is very true, even if the whales buy another 10 copies to try and keep it afloat on release day it won't matter. The game is dead already and hasn't even been released to the public

It's just a matter of time now until the money starts to run out and Chris can't keep spending 10k a month on server costs, I call the first sign will be them closing up a studio and playing it off as 'no longer needed because the development is so close to being finished'

It may be 1-2-3 more years but it's coming sure as taxes

I see that happening, but I also see the old Richard Garriott and Ultima Online episode repeating itself except after a development time of dozens of years.

CR wants people to play his game in a very specific way, if you don't play it that way, he will be utterly shocked.

"Why are you killing all the rabbits???"

"Because I can."

"I'm role playing a murdering thief, which I can do and because I can."

My first 72 hours. I am a masochist. self.starcitizen

It all started with a picture on my Twitter feed. The Mercury Star Runner. I had not been following the game nor had any clue where this beautiful, vivacious ship was from.

I must know more about you... I said to myself

I buried myself in YouTube videos. Ran through five or six beginner guides. I felt ready to jump into the game and dropped the last of my splurge money for the month on the Avenger Titan. I’m going to find you baby... I’m going to learn and be the best pilot for you when we meet

But then disaster struck. The moment I get into the Titan, I crash twice into the New Babbage hanger. WHY?! WHY DO I SUCK SO MUCH?! I immediately log off for the night.

What these beginners guides failed to mention was that there was a free flight mode. Where I could learn in a vacuum with little consequence. I gain some of my confidence back and log back into the world.

More learning pains occur. I would spend an hour trying to figure out how to do a single delivery mission. ONE WHOLE HOUR. But I feel so proud when I see the 8k credits depositing into my account. I’m becoming a citizen!

Midway through the second delivery mission, I land on this peculiar moon. I hop off and start running to my delivery destination... until suddenly I see a shadow casting overhead... wtf? Is that my ship???? I see my ship floating above me, tumbling away like a piece of paper blown by a gust of wind. And then an explosion. I sit in my chair, staring blankly at my screen for a whole minute. I finish my delivery and then log out.

Today, I told myself things would be different. I awaken in port Tressler. I claim and retrieve my poor ship and start to make my quantum jump. Out of no where, a police ship demands a scan. But it’s too late...I’ve already initiated the jump. I’m fined and now have a crime stat on me. But I press on.

I finished three deliveries and one bounty hunt. I’m so proud of myself. I’m learning! I’m going to be the best pilot for you, my MSR! I port at lorville and find where to pay the fine.

20k. 20k aUEC. Most of the day’s pay. I cry internally, pay the fine, and then log out.

Now... will I continue to play? Despite all of these... unfortunate events?

You bet your rear end I will. I am a star citizen!

Edit: Y'all are mad lads. Awards for this drivel? You humble me!

RE: Being bad with money

Why yes, I bought a Robertsian space pewpew game for a failed console, ported by Crave Entertainment (known for console shovel ware)
So I was ordering some other Dreamcast stuff and saw this for ~30 funbux and thought "I wonder how this plays on a console?"
And as it turns out... it's pretty okay-ish. The controls for flying and shooting feel pretty good with the DC controller, targeting of specific ships/subsystems is an awkward mess, but the game automatically switches to mission critical targets most of the times when you need it to.
The game itself is nothing new to me, since I own the original PC version (to be precise: I own the German localized version which has some of the cringiest voice acting in PC gaming history)

Pros:
- One of the few DC titles that supports 16:9 aspect ratio out of the box, and the game looks overall quite good
- To safe space, they cut out most of the FMV garbage between missions (clicking on objects in your cabin, walking to the briefing room, etc.), so it's just mission briefing -> fighter selection -> fighter loadout -> short FMV of pilots running to their ship -> pewpew , which streamlines the game experience in a good way
- Some good looking original fighter designs, that managed to avoid the usual Wing Commander trope of jet-fighters-in space

Cons:
- Well, it's still Starlancer, so the story is hot garbage: It's WWII in SPACE, this time even with Pearl Harbor in SPACE, but with the sides mixed up a bit: The Alliance (USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan) vs the evil Eastern Coalition (Russia, China, Arab States)
- Also still Starlancer: Dogfighting in this game is way too easy, so to introduce some difficulty the game relies way too much on you having to escort friendly capital ships, while waves of enemy bombers drop in from multiple angles to launch their torpedoes simultaneously. Have fun trying to shoot them all down in time while trying to avoid the splash damage from the torps.
- In contrast to the interesting fighter designs, the art team seems to have completely ran out of ideas when it came to capital ship designs. So we ended with a bunch of boxes that are glued together randomly (and the Japanese get a carrier design ripped straight out of Starship Troopers)

Overall, still a better investment than dropping $45 for a SC starter package.
