I'll admit I'm a pretty pathetic NEET in real life but I could never treat my mom that way, and it just amazes me how someone can be that lovely to their own mother, like it just makes no sense to me

Usually someone's done the initial breaking of the mother's spirit and the rear end in a top hat "kid" is just following through since nothing is stopping them

it's quite a heartbreaking dynamic and I've encountered it a lot too :smith:

When I was growing up, my favorite uncle was basically neckbeard Steve without the mean streak and my grandmother was Francine. My uncle played video games all day while eating massive amounts of pancreas-shrivelingly sugary cereal out of tupperware, while my grandmother waited on him hand & foot, and he didn't get a job until he was like 30. The funny thing is that my grandmother also has a Francine-esque personality and past.

Now you're making me feel guilty as poo poo for not having gotten a job till I was 27 and that lasted only a couple months and then went without finding another one till last year and that one only lasted about 2 weeks(whoever invented online job applications has a seat in hell waiting for them, it makes job hunting an absolute nightmare)

Why would you feel guilty about it? Our generation got absolutely poo poo upon by the GFC, loads and loads of first rate people have fallen through the cracks. The job market is a nightmare, casualisation is ruining everything, it's all absolutely hosed.

Don't ever blame yourself. It's not just you it's happened to and it's not your fault

EDIT oh and also there's nothing inherently moral or laudable about employment, don't let the protestant work ethic gently caress you up

There's nothing shameful about unemployment, as long as you don't verbally abuse your mom and/or develop a strange sexual relationship with a couch. Just treat your mom right, bath regularly, and don't torture and kill cats.

No, please don't feel guilty! I didn't mean to disparage my uncle OR you. I was just telling you what I observed of my uncle's life, which was my grandmother's fault for stunting his personal growth so severely by enabling him. His personal growth didn't have anything to do with his employment status; what I really meant to say is that he didn't start making any efforts toward any kind of progress -- with employment (in my view, anyway) as a stepping stone toward independence/adulthood -- until he was around 30.

The job market has been turbo-hosed for at least my entire adult life, and my uncle is only 12 years older than me. Unemployment is nothing to be ashamed of, no matter what any Boomer/gen-X-er says -- poo poo is hard.

And I read this in Roger's voice and it just sounds very much like it could be a line from the show.

Knowing this show it would probably be from doing it so hard he tears it off and bleeds to death or some other thing that would be both incredibly disturbing to watch but also impressively animated so you can't turn your eyes away from it
