It does, although that's not the one I was thinking of.

Played a bit of trunk, the ID game is not long for this world I think. Might not even survive the next stable. there’s nothing to use id scrolls on except consumables. Whether identification added much to gameplay is a matter of opinion, but it’s yet another piece of crawl that no longer makes sense now that everything around it has been removed. cut cut cut cut cut

lots of really great QoL features in there now though. I really like new acquirement and more combat numbers. one of these days they’re going to tell us our raw damage instead of obfusticating it behind the frankly ridiculous exclamation point system.

classic roguelikes have revamped ID before in ways that were interesting. angband had a mostly-vestigial ID system that they managed to make halfway-interesting a few years ago.

i have no confidence that any attempt will be made before the scissors are pulled out in crawl's case, though

Crawl is going to become an auto battling idling game where all weapons are replaced with “melee” and all spells are replaced with “spells” and they have an estimated dps based on an average of all current melee weapons and spells.

An ID game in a game like Angband works better for me because the biggest point of it isn't really the IDing, it's to give the game a sort of natural cyclic gameplay. You dive a little, you collect stuff, you go back up, you ID all your stuff, and then you dive a little more. It has something satisfying about it and gives you a good natural stopping and starting point for a game session. Without that, there's really no big point in ever going back to town again unless you run out of consumables, which is not often the case.

How do I not get splatted in the early game as an octopode transmuter? Also, what god? Seems like chei might work well with unarmed, but early game chei makes it even tougher.

Oh god no, that must have been cut what feels like a decade ago. One of the very first changes of modern DCSS, alongside Dwarf removal.

get spider form castable, then ice form. Blade hands if you can get things to attack 1 by 1. Go gozag since he'll help you fill your ring slots with artifacts and defense rings or fill out your spell list (stone form and infest were my main spells trying to 15 rune and pretty much carried me after I got them), as well as give you a free 'oh poo poo' potion barrage. Your going to get splatted, they are the squishest race outside of felid. Play on gooncrawl so you can wear a hat. Good luck.

However, they will NEVER prevent use of summoning magic as a primary attack mode from halving your XP gain.

sticks to snakes was cut last update. maybe it got moved to a different spellbook but transmuters don't start with it anymore. instead you get this weird combat buff called werewolf blood or something.
makes sense i suppose, it was the obvious strategy at low level to just spam sticks all day until your build came online.

and yes Summoning XP penalty is really dumb and the simple fact that Hep Ancestor doesn't penalize you (because that would really dumb) makes me even more annoyed

Merp, my bad my brain just jumped straight to Distillation/Evaporate.You know why they got cut? Not for any ideology thing about finding uses for bad potions or whatever, but because of power level. They where simply too good for low level spells. So it got cut.

Too right they're squishy...I killed about a dozen of them yesterday and never got beyond Lair.

That was probably partly because the last few successful runs I've done were basic O-tab fighters.

Why did they get rid of the trap disarming anyways?? I've never understood that change

Honestly I don't understand the majority of their changes these days

T&D was removed since it was deemed an uninteresting xp tax with no thought processes behind getting 10-15 levels in it for every character. I kiiiinda agree, even if the counterargument goes "but you can choose how much xp to allocate!" and the rebuttal is "yes, and everyone choses 10-15 levels". So the skill got axed, and everyone got the equivilent of the same amount of levels in it...

Wait, we're talking about disarming traps. Yea, even with T&D removed disarming shoulda been a thing. Or was it too 'optimal' to disarm every one you saw? Surely not, as back then the food clock (+OOD clock) was still considered real. Anyone got a clue regarding disarming?

Also for the first point, removing T&D, it seemed sane at the time but hindsight is 20/20 and if everyone was putting the same amount of xp into it, the correct answer it to change it's scaling, so that all values from 0-27 have merit. Early example of axing features rather than fixing them...

There's also those spear trap things that are Ossuary-only, IIRC.

But yeah dunno why they got rid of trap disarming, since that was an active thing you pushed a button to do, so it should have a use even without the Trap skill as theoretically everyone has a useful amount of it.

There was no way to get around. I didn't have any blink scrolls so I repeatedly stepped onto the permanent teleport trap before it eventually spit me out on the other side.

I think something done goofed because an Ossuary probably shouldn't have four zot traps unless they're... nerfed babby zot traps??

As far as I can find, the Ossuary should not have Zot Traps, no.

My incredibly bad and stupid idea would be to build on the way disarmed traps dropped piddly resources, like nonmagic swords from blade traps and arrows from arrow traps. Make it so that as you increase you T&D level more traps have a chance to drop thematic items and existing item droppers have a chance to drop better stuff, like a high-level T&D character can get a scroll of teleport out of disarming teleportation traps or branded greatswords from blade traps. Basically investing experience into more resources.

Get all the way to 27 and you can try to disarm a Zot trap! Maybe it will blow up in your face and horribly malmutate you, maybe you'll get the randart ring powering it... :unsmigghh:

This was good advice. It took a long time to get one past lair, but once I got statue form, it's been pretty much O-Tab all the way
