I loved it but if you’re on the fence try the demo, if it doesn’t grab you then it sounds like you’ve already looked up the ending so move on and do something else with your time. The game has tremendous music and I unreservedly recommend the game as an experience but beyond that I’m not going to try to convince anybody to play it.

I just wanted to live in Nier's world (weird as that is). I loved running, sliding, and gliding around the serene expanse, seeing nature's reclamation while listening to haunting music that's constantly shifting and being manipulated in various ways. I loved the easy to pick up yet hard to master combat, and the way it jammed all sorts of game genres together, and how seamless and fluid the animations looked. I loved how OUT THERE the story got in a sci-fi sense, yet it still was able to conjure real pathos and humor while wearing its heart on its sleeve, all the while dismantling preconceptions of videogame narrative structure. The sidequests are well-written for mostly being fetch quests and the bosses are simply spectacular. The game asks the player to make some rather tall commitments, but in the end if it hits you then it REALLY hits you. The NieR games are very unique jrpgs and I think they deserve the praise.

Dunno the exact moment but just had a ton of good hunts yesterday. Sliding down that avalanche was cool. Then we had that hectic fight against the Great Girros where that Odogaron wouldn't leave us alone. After you left I responded to a bunch of SOSs and had some pretty cool fights as well, made myself a new weapon and then went on a few hunts to finish off a set of armour that I felt would complement it. Dunno if it's a good build or not but it was fun making it. Then I had a really tough solo fight against the Viper Tobi in a story expedition. So many awesome epic little moments in each fight.

Before I would get kinda burnt out after a few hunts but I played all day yesterday and wasnt bored even by the time Lady Corn kicked me off the PS5 cuz she had just finished work and wanted to play Spirit of the North

Monster Hunter owns.

You def owe it to yourself to try out some of the other weapons when you're feeling adventurous.

For about 10 years my top two games were:

Portal 2
SMB3

And before portal 2 SMB3 was #1.

In 2018 I played Nier:Automata (documented in this very thread in fact) and it knocked SMB3 down with ease. It was not a tough decision but I think requires you to be a certain kind of mind in a certain kind of mood for it to make the sheer impact it did. I do not begrudge anyone in this thread for not liking it but I can safely say that a combination of philoshophical ideas, the control and combat, the little side quests, the rich world, the genre switching, messing with the player all encapsulated with the music (and I think it is the greatest Video Game OST of all time) gave me a gaming experience I have never had before. I played it. I finished it. I will never replay it because what I went through and how it affected me felt like a single time only sort of thing. I would be doing a disservice to my own thoughts and feelings if I were to revisit it.

At some point I will write a very silly long post about Nier:Automata that goes into everything for the gush about games thread (like I did for Bloodborne and Tomb Raider Anniversary) but right now play the demo just to get a feel for it. If you do not like it, then do not worry! It is not a game for everyone. If you do, and you crave more, and you do get it, then please also document what you feel (negative or positive) because I love hearing people talk about Nier:Automata.

Oh I definitely will at some point, I'm just really liking the sword and shield. Doesn't seem like a lot of people use it either which is a plus. Besides, the hunter holds the sword in his left hand which as a lefty, gets a big left thumb up from me

It's not a super DPS weapon but in upper tier play it can be really useful for support because you can use items super easy, combine that with level 5 friendship/wide range and you have a powerhouse emergency team healer.

For those who saw the State of Play I am aware there was something about FFVIIR getting an update and Yuffie DLC.

I have not finished FFVIIR but was wondering, is the update extra content so should I wait until it comes out, or is it OK to finish the game and then play the DLC later? Does the DLC fit into the game? What would be best?

Also no spoilers please :)

Its a good game but it has huge flaws, just try it and play it without listening to the discourse or you might be left scratching your head

NANI?

The actual free update just a PS5 graphics update, the DLC is an extra episode that will presumably work fine played after the game since that's how everyone who already finished the main game will experience it.

For owners of the PS4 version you get a free upgrade to the PS5 version (graphics/QoL updates/fast loading/new mode/save transfer). Once you upgrade to the PS5 version you can buy the Yuffie story chapter which can be played in addition to the main game but is not required to understand its story. So I would just keep playing if you already have it, but the PS5 upgrade is incentive to come back and plat it or play Hard Mode + DLC.

Holy poo poo I beat that Raging Brachydios. That was insane!

I got myself a good team of mutual healers and between every bout people wingdraked back to camp to grab items/food. It came down to the wire and we had 2 carts (not me tho!) but hot drat we did it!

What a piece of poo poo that guy is.

Then I went on to fight a tempered Behemoth and I died in his death cast of Ecliptic Meteor and failed the quest. The Behemoth reared up to cast it and when his leg came down it knocked me out from behind the protective comet

BTW if you bounce off Nier Automata I recommend going for Horizon Zero Dawn, they accidentally stumbled upon similar ideas in their settings, but unfold in vastly different directions. HZD is much more conventional and accessible and is build around One Big Twist, N:A is much more of a mood piece and about exploring its core theme to its logical conclusion.

Also, the PS+ version of FFVII is not eligible for the free PS5 upgrade.

Nier automata’s payoff comes at the very end. It’s kind of a slog to get there, although some seem to love the combat. For some people it will be worth it and they will gush about it endlessly (me), for some it won’t. The demo doesn’t do the game justice although I guess it’s a decent slice of the moment to moment gameplay. The decision you gotta make is if you’re willing to commit the time to see it to the end. If not, I wouldn’t bother.

Yeah, S&S owns, you've got a really versatile utilitarian weapon with some defence and mobility, an attack that's useful for mounting, shield bash attacks that build up stun damage, all good stuff. Other weapons all lean into something a bit more flashy and specialised, so depends on what you want to do.

I'm actually thinking about dropping my Charge Blade for a bit next time I go back to it, even though it's taken me through all of Iceborne and I've finally got the Raging Brachi set/weapon all put together. I'm basically right about to get deep into the endgame stuff, I've cleared the special assignments for Zinogre and Brachydios which just leaves Furious Rajang and Alatreon (and then Fatalis). Also a bunch of guiding lands levelling so I can augment stuff. But every time I play I go back to this one tempered Black Diablos optional quest and get stomped. gently caress that guy in particular. I just can't ever get the chance to put any real damage into it, and genuinely think I need to swap back to the bow or something.

It's still really cool to see one of the biggest games from last year given away for free to PS4 players. Completely unexpected, just gotta be thankful for what we are given is all.
