Clearly the stories are getting too good in porn to make room for horny in movies. Who needs Peggy Carter getting hot for Steve Rogers when you can experience the deep and complex pathos of a woman who has somehow gotten caught in a washer and/or dryer?

I'm trying to think of alternate versions from the theatrical cut of movies I prefer and the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven comes to mind, one of the blade Blade Runner cuts and uhh maybe that's it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Alternate_versions_of_films

The extended versions of Lord of the Rings are fine but I prefer the theatrical over the extended.

This has been on my mind lately because I didn't know until recently there are two versions of (Leon) The Professional, I've never seen the longer version. How is it?

The Exorcist is another one where it takes more effort to track down the theatrical cut than the director's/extended cut.

The International Cut of Leon is my preferred version to watch. If you like The Professional, then definitely check it out. I ended up getting it in a used Luc Besson box set from Disc Replay. There is some ickyness, but it's in the direction of Matilda towards Leon, and he does not reciprocate. I don't want to spoil anymore, but one of the added scenes provides a nice callback for the final scene featuring Leon.

This is a great article!

quote:

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor smiles at Natalie Portman like a dumb golden retriever puppy without ever venturing to rend her asunder with his mighty hammer, so to speak.

I worked on A Dangerous Method, and I’ve always said that a primary reason it failed is that Keira Knightley is sexless and there is no sexual chemistry between her and Fassbender.

Someone here I think posted a picture of a shirtless Burt Reynolds in the 70s, and the comparison between his body then and his equivalent today was shocking.

Believe women.

1950s cinema was incredibly horny. I watched the Sam Fuller directed western Run of the Arrow last night, and other than the racism and Lost Cause propaganda, it had Charles Bronson and Rod Steiger shirtless and Steiger's the one who gets a love scene and a scene in a sweat lodge with an Native woman.

Also, she uses Arnold as an example of an unrealistic physique, but Conan hosed, a lot.

I haven't seen the remake of Conan, but I'm guessing Jason Mamoa doesn't make a witch cum so hard she turns into a demon.

This is really good. I particularly like the point about McMansion's being designed primarily for resale value, and the analogy that bodies are no longer to be lived in but rather trained for combat. I actually think that point could be pushed even further, about the demands for commodification of everything, and the economic value maximization of every facet of our lives. In this sense, physical shaping can also be tied to something like the gig (formerly sharing) economy and side hustles, where former leisure time and leisure activities are now for generating more exchange value.

Look about you, Clarke. You see the mountain, and hill following after hill, as wave on wave, you see the woods and orchards, the fields of ripe corn, and the meadows reaching to the reed-beds by the river. You see me standing here beside you, and hear my voice; but I tell you that all these things — yes, from that star that has just shone out in the sky to the solid ground beneath our feet — I say that all these are but dreams and shadows: the shadows that hide the real world from our eyes. There is a real world, but it is beyond this glamour and this vision, beyond these "chases in Arras, dreams in a career," beyond them all as beyond a veil. I do not know whether any human being has ever lifted that veil; but I do know, Clarke, that you and I shall see it lifted this very night from before another's eyes. You may think all this strange nonsense; it may be strange, but it is true, and the ancients knew what lifting the veil means. They called it seeing the god Pan.

The theatrical cut of Aliens is better overall and has perfect pacing, although it'd be nice if there was a version that kept Ripley's daughter stuff in and the turrets subplot but did away with all the boring poo poo about the colony pre-marines landing.

The theatrical cut of 1408 cuts out a really self-indulgent daddy issues subplot to focus on the daughter more and has a much better alternate ending.

You can probably make a case either way for the theatrical vs director's cuts of T2, although I personally think the scene with the brain chip is so important that the director's cut easily wins.

SuperMechagodzilla posted:

That's nothing more than the Hedgehog/Prower phenomenon of ostensibly adult characters engaged in prolonged and intense bouts of presexual intimacy.

FN and Poe - despite being twenty- and thirty-somethings, respectively - are several steps behind Matthew Broderick's teen hacker in Wargames, who tentatively explores how it feels to take his shirt off in front of a girl.

For fans, the actual erotic appeal comes from the fact that Sonic The Hedgehog does not gently caress. Ever. He achieves full satisfaction just by staring at you with his massive hypersensitive eyes, and passionately filling his rounded belly with chilidogs. Poe and FN, likewise, will never move beyond hugging and trying on eachothers' clothes. They have no need to.

There are a lot of cases, many already mentioned, where the perfect cut would be some kind of halfway point between theatrical and extended cuts. LotR, Amadeus, Aliens all fall in this category in my opinion and I'm sure there are more.

I just rewatched the LotR extended editions for the first time in a decade and it was so obvious wherever an extended scene came on because I was always acutely aware that the scene served no real story purpose. That's not really a bad thing, though—I was watching them to have a bunch of fantasy nonsense on my TV for 9 hours and the chill hangout character scenes were pretty great when you're not watching it as a movie.

I vibed with middle earth pretty hard even though I have a ton of issues with those films, and I wish more sci-fi/fantasy movies took that approach to alternate editions. It'd kill the pacing in any movie, but sometimes it'd be nice to just kick back and chill in a cool world with some characters you enjoy. Give me a 10 minute scene of Deckard eating noodles and arguing with the guy behind the counter.

There's a whole thing involving French movies about very young girls and their sexuality and even though it's presented as a romantic open minded thing (in contrast with north america's puritan values) it's directly tied with a bunch of unbelievably creepy old men who should be in jail and an industry that makes excuses for them.

That's amazing and now that I think about it probably intentional.

I really appreciate that they don't really sexualize Furiosa or Joe's brides; like there's the first time Max sees them washing off and drinking water after the sandstorm and you think just for a second that it's going to be like a 80s metal video or carwash scene or something, then you realize that it's the water that Max is so thirsty for and not the women.

Don't Blink
Fury Road is in agreement with the article, being a film but a story about the commoditization of desexualized bodies, but in that respect its almost anti-horny.

Immortan Joe wants his wives for their capacity to provide him sons. The scene when Max looks past the bathing wives to thirst at the water is pretty much the line "they don’t dream of women, but of cheeseburgers and fries" from the article. Capable's relationship with Nux is motherly. The struggle to achieving reproductive freedom is not at all libidinal but lies in controlling resources: the Citadel's water, Immortan's infrastructure, and the bodies of those that live and work there (as represented by the flower seeds). And when Furiosa and Max swap fluids, they do not gently caress but become blood brothers.
