Cowardliness. Some part of them recognises the 'wrongness' of their ideology. Some vestige of shame. It's actually rare to find openly proud nazis. It's always couched behind 'i'm not racist but...' or some other mental barrier.

Its not just white supremacists, pretty much any group that isn't accepted by the mainstream will find secret ways of identifying themselves to other members.
