I finally got a UHD player (well, PS5), what are some really good looking releases that will show off the higher quality?

I already have a couple of UHD discs - Fury Road came with a blu-ray box set, and I have a couple of Vinegar Syndrome titles... actually might just start with Tammy and the T-Rex.

Beastmaster, 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Blade Runner, any John Carpenter film, It's A Wonderful Life, Casino, Rambo First Blood, Scarface, and Suspiria all have impressed me.

Beastmaster's 4k convinced my friends to buy a 4k player.

I just got the Demons 1 & 2 4k UHD set, but I haven't had a chance to watch them.

edit: I'm gonna go against the grain here and say...I think Tammy & the T-Rex looks fine on blu-ray. I didn't get the 4k UHD, and I think my blu-ray of it is already amazing.

While you lack DV (not a huge loss IMO), the HDR in Annihilation is gorgeous.

Native 4K is where it shines, especially movies shot on film. Pretty much every Kubrick so far has been amazing, but The Shining is the tops so far.

Sweet thanks. I'm gonna guess that 2001: A Space Oddysey looks incredible too?

One thing I like to mention when someone asks about good UHDs is 80's and 90's action movies. Stuff like Total Recall, the Rambo series, Cliffhanger, Air Force One, and Bad Boys. I certainly can't recommend The Shining or Lawrence of Arabia enough but I think it's also great that a lot of these movies that I grew up watching on cable are now in this kind of pristine condition for home viewing.

Yeah, 70's-90's action movies really do shine in 4k UHDs.I was always lukewarm on Scarface, but the UHD was on sale and I've been going through De Palma's filmography, and it immediately skyrocketed up in my admiration.

I'll also say any black-and-white film has been impressive.

I've got a handful of UHDs I haven't even watched yet, like Tremors and Total Recall, and now Cronenberg's Crash.

Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome have been killing it with their 4ks, and Warner keeps putting out awesome stuff.

edit: Oh! Alien! Although you usually have to get it from Best Buy or something. Amazon doesn't carry it that often, for some reason.

It might be easier to just say what movies are best avoided on 4k UHD, cuz so many of them are great.

I only know to avoid Terminator 2, but I think the original Terminator is okay on UHD?

Eh, I can see that, there's not a lot that's very "vibrant" about it, but if there's one thing that's great with the Tammy is comparing the menu screens between the UHD and Blu, you can really see just how much that neon color stands out in HDR.

That's fair! I haven't really seen Tammy in all it's HDR glory, cuz I bought it before I upgraded to 4k, so I probably don't know what I'm missing.

It's only going to add to your experience with your favs, seeing them in utterly pristine condition.

I'm a cheapo whrn it comes to Blu-rays, not wanting to pay more than $6 for most stuff. But I'm blowing decent money to get my all-timer films in UHD.

Most of them are affordable to upgrade, especially Alien, and go on sale regularly on Amazon at less than $20. Suspiria is the most expensive, cuz it rarely dips below $40, but it is absolutely worth the upgrade if you love the movie. It looks and sounds fantastic, and has a lot of special features. (I never owned Suspiria before the UHD, so the features may be the same.)

The Terminator has not been released on UHD, and given it’s a James Cameron film we’ll see if it ever will be.

There are a few that aren’t “bad” but maybe not worth upgrading from the Blu-Ray. Ghostbusters doesn’t sound like it offers much over the Blu, for example (it’s a pretty noisy film).

I had to stop by Target yesterday evening to get a couple things, so I swung by their movie section... it has shrunk considerably since the last time I was there, it was just a single aisle plus a couple new release displays. I was hoping they'd have a couple decent UHDs I could pick up but they had maybe 20 different titles at most. I did get Total Recall at least.

Gonna hit up my local indie store this weekend, hopefully they'll have a better selection.

Yea as far as in-store shopping for UHD goes, it only works if you're just browsing casually and if you see X Y or Z maybe you'll grab it. Going to the store specifically because you want Gremlins UHD or whatever isn't practical anymore because stores just don't carry much and what they do have feels totally random. A lot of stores won't even put stuff out on release date, but it'll mysteriously show up on the shelf like 2 weeks later(even though their website says they had it in stock the whole time).

Iron Crowned

Honestly over the last 5 years movie sections have been shrinking drastically. Meijer used to be pretty decent with a large section, but then they pushed it to a couple aisles, and recently, it's now a single aisle in the back of Electronics, completely displacing the video games, which surprises me, because that's almost non-existent. Also the distributor who furnished the has been getting worse and worse about it.

Walmart is probably still the best big box store to do a quick browse, but they also recently cut their section in half.

The last time I was in a Best Buy the CD “section” was a pile of unorganized random discs on a single knee-level shelf underneath the coffee machines.

CDs are completely dead at Best Buy in the last couple years. Like, can’t even buy them on their website. It’s kinda crazy to me.

I worked for BBY and 2008 was the beginning of the reduction of square footage for media. It was like the first time in company history I believe. And yeah, the reflow in the last couple years now has it done to about 40ft worth of racks in one of their biggest stores in their backyard. But yeah, I’ve had a few random “ooooh I want that” moments since it shrunk. Namely w my gal seeing stuff she wants to grab. I’m a sucker for deals so just troll the Best Buy app and blu-Ray.com to get the best prices.
