I miss my post high school days when my friend worked at a store that was dedicated to CDs and DVDs, when I'd show up on Friday night, hangout and just buy a bunch of random CDs or DVDs that just looked cool, it's how I discovered Cirith Ungol.

They did sell porn on DVD, so there was a running gag (homophobic now) about sneaking a boxed set of gay porn into each other's staff pics, or reserve piles.

Best Buy was the only place to get the extended edition of Dune that David Lynch demanded he have his name taken off of--in non-anamorphic dvd format. It's lost to time forever now, probably.

With Alien the benefits also go way beyond just HDR. The Nostromo is just a ridiculously detailed set and the increased resolution allows you to notice every single button and computer readout and scuff mark and texture. A really good native 4k transfer almost takes on a 3D quality and Alien is one of those.

Looks like some stuff was added to the slate of UHD releases in May.

The Sting, The Birds, and Animal House. The Birds getting an individual release is good news for those who didn't grab the Hitchcock set because it means Vertigo and Rear Window will probably be coming too.

I am relatively new to physical media collecting: did The Beach (Di Caprio film of the Alex Garland novel) have a slated Blu Ray release and then get cancelled back in 2011? I was wondering why I couldn't find a copy anywhere and that might explain it.

What do you all recommend for storing/displaying your physical media? What few IKEA DVD/CD rack shelves I have are almost completely full and they no longer make or sell them in store. There are a bunch online but most reviews complain of dubious stability or build quality. I have a regular bookcase but it's got actual books on it and it'd look a little weird to have DVDs/Blurays in there too.

If you want to buy something, the IKEA Billy family of shelving units are the standard. Sturdy, modular, adjustable. You could do what I did and drill shelves into your walls. It looks nice, but I’m running out of room again.

These are the ones I was looking at before and it seems like a lot of people online say that the pieces come without the proper holes drilled in them, or that pieces come de-laminated and impossible to assemble. Upshot is they're in-stock at the local BB so I guess worst case scenario I just drive right back to the store. Thanks!

I could just start piling it all up in the hallways Hoarders style, but that's just not my bag baby  I'd unironically love to have a fake mid-90s looking video rental store type thing going on like the Cinemassacre dudes have for their Rental Reviews series at some point but it's not very realistic. I've got a smaller version of that shelf. I had to drill a couple holes myself and I'm not totally convinced it's stable, but it hasn't collapsed yet. I wouldn't want to pay much more than the $40 I got it for (on sale). That said I'll probably buy more once I fill this one up. I just wish the quality wasn't so lovely.

Not the 4K, but I watched the blu a month ago and there were some parts that looked really really bad. It was mostly just in darker shots in hallways.

doomisland
Oct 5, 2004

Yeah the HDR made any of the dark parts look good so I would say that is where the 4k version really makes use of the format. The post processing (?) of the entire film to give it the grainy look seemed to not cause a huge bump going from HD to UHD. Sound was great as I mentioned.

Any of the US Blu-rays are fine, only variation is in extras. The digipak had The Battle for Citizen Kane and RKO 281 on DVD, plus some printed swag and a booklet. It also got a digibook without RKO 281. The current in-print version is just the Blu-ray with the movie, commentaries, trailer, interviews, and stills gallery.

It’s been rumored that Criterion will release an 80th anniversary edition, as well as other Welles stuff (perhaps also Mank).

Reminder that Indicator's flash sale begins tomorrow, as does Kino Lorber's Studio Classics' March sale. Warner Archive will also have their last 4 for $44 sale via WBShop starting Friday. The label isn't shuttering, they're just apparently not using WBShop for sales anymore.

For those interested in Indicator, they do list what discs are region free. However, I'd strongly advise to hold off on any Harryhausen films because they're working on a complete box set of Ray Harryhausen films.

Dredd is an upscale and not a very good one. The BD has more detail in some scenes.

Probably won't be too expensive. It's already confirmed they're getting all the films, which consists mostly of Sony-owned titles, but also a few Warner and StudioCanal. All the Sony titles have already been released by Indicator except for Jason and the Argonauts, most from new(er) 2K and 4K restorations.

Here's what's expected:

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (Warner)
It Came from Beneath the Sea (Sony)
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (Sony)
20 Million Miles to Earth (Sony)
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Sony)
The 3 Worlds of Gulliver (Sony)
Mysterious Island (Sony)
Jason and the Argonauts (Sony)
First Men on the Moon (Sony)
One Million Years B.C. (Fox US/StudioCanal UK)
The Valley of Gwangi (Warner)
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (Sony)
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (Sony)
Clash of the Titans (Warner)

There's also a lot of his short films and unfinished work. The Warner titles were then-new 2K remasters/restorations, One Million Years BC is a 4K restoration (Kino released the US edition), and of the Sony titles It Came from Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. the Flying Sauces, Jason and the Argonauts, and 20 Million Miles to Earth were existing masters. I think only First Men on the Moon, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and The 3 Worlds of Gulliver were 4K restorations (remainder were 2K).

YOU CAN FLY!!!
So, I'm looking for an alternative means of storing my movie collection. I got rid of the tall Ikea Billy bookcases that I used for over a decade to store them, and I've also cut way back on my movie collection. For a while I would buy pretty much any movie I saw and liked, even if I never planned to watch it again.

I am in need of a new media console, so I thought it would be great if I could find one with drawers deep enough to store the blu-rays spine up. The width of a bluray case is just over 5 inches, but most media consoles with drawers, the drawers are 5 inches or less. Shockingly, I've only managed to find one with drawers deep enough, but it's kind of more than I would like to spend, especially once you take into account shipping and tax.

https://www.cb2.com/congo-media-credenza/s559147

Does anybody have any suggestions? Am I just not thinking outside the box enough? I did move into a new place with these built in-shelves in the wall that are nearly 2 feet deep, I suppose I could get some kind of basket or something to store them in that way. I know this is kind of the antithesis of this thread, given that so many of you have entire walls in their homes dedicates to their movie collection. But it's where I am right now. Anyone have any thoughts?

The Indicator/Powerhouse Sale is now Live

I grabbed:
Roadgames (Limited Edition),
The Pillow Book (Limited Edition),
The Last Detail,
The Collector,
Night of the Demon,
Modern Romance (Limited Edition),
Hardcore,
Experiment in Terror,
and Body Double

All of these are Region Free except Roadgames, which isn't listed as on sale, but was discounted to about 16 pounds.

I highly recommend grabbing their Eyes of Laura Mars if you don't already own it. I have the barebones USA release. This one has a lot of good supplements, and it's Region Free as wel.
