So Shadowbane was bought by a Chinese company a couple years ago. Apparently they have spent the last couple years doing actual dev work and now have released this game on steam for $11. There is a single world and the game ACTUALLY RUNS WELL. Most client issues seem to be been fixed too. I'm playing with a large pubbie NA nation and we have nightly PVP activities. I unfortunately don't have any good fights recorded, but here is a fight where we absolutely rolled another group:

https://twitch.tv/videos/934877040

What is Shadowbane?

Shadowbane is a MMO that was live from 2003 to 2009 featuring open-world PVP, sieges on destructible player constructed cities, almost infinite variation in character builds, and overt racism.

2009? So its dead now?

Nope! Resurrect from the grave, first by emulator projects and now by a chinese company that bought the IP - its back baybe.
https://steamcharts.com/app/1475570

OK, but I still ain’t never heard of no “Shadowbanes” and I’ve played every PVP game ever

Lets just say for 5 of the 6 years that the game was live, it was littered with bugs, dupes, and crippling lag. They actually cleaned it up a bit right before it was shutdown, but still had problems. Despite this, it was fun as hell though.

It seems like a lot of work has been done for the steam version. The game is buttery and I haven't even seen a single bug yet!

Pros/Cons?

quote:

Pros:
Open world PVP with full looting
Crazy min/maxing possible
Player designed cities
Sieges on cities
PVP viable in a day
No Quests
Everything forces you into possible PVP situations

Cons:
Click to move
Hard to do anything solo without a nation/multibox
Old rear end interfaces
Somewhat buggy client
Flagrant racism somewhat less racism

What is PVP like?

Here are some videos:
https://twitch.tv/videos/934877040
<TODO>

Large scale PVP usually happens in defense of a town or at mines which can be captured during a settable (by the current owner) one-hour window each day.

The game also promotes very small scale pvp in a ton of ways. At server up and every 4 hours after, discipline rune droppers spawn which are always located at the same place in the world. Discipline basically add additional skills to your character and vicious battles involving 2 to 5 people happen over the more valuable ones.

Levelling also often involves small scale PVP. You can easily hit a PVP viable level in this game in one or two days if you know what you are doing, but there are a finite number of places to do this. Usually when you are getting levels (usually powerlevelled) some rear end in a top hat will roll by and try to kill you and take your stuff. What a dick! This happens to people that try to farm also!

When you die, you drop everything in your inventory and your equipment takes damage. You respawn in your down with a short term death debuff. If you don’t repair your gear it can break and be gone forever. Please repair your gear.

How does one play with me/goons?
Post here or join this disc https://discord.gg/fpsKezs6XZ and i'll send you a discord invite for the nation. Voice comms are pretty much required to do anything meaningful in this game. We can get our own channel/server going if there is enough interest.

Minotaur warriors are big, black and angry. You run fast, do a fuckload of damage, and have a HP pool the size of Tomed's mother. You have no real way of dealing with stealthers or flyers but honestly you wreck everything else. We use these in larger fights to chase and destroy targets. Play this in offensive stance and use your weapon powers smartly.

The Sentinel is mostly used for power leveling any future characters you might have and farming for money if you are so inclined. Other sentinel builds do huge AOE damage and debuffs. This build casts an AOE holy debuff, then the holy AOE. When it gets low on mana it casts an aoe mana drain. You play this in defensive stance and wear +defense armor.

The Scout can stealth, reveal steathers, and find nearby players. This is very useful for not getting ganked. Moreover, scouts are often used to hunt discipline runes (discs) due to these same capabilities. You need to adapt your stances to the situation as well as the weapon powers you use.

Choose Holmen's Grove as your starting town.

You start on newbie island which is one of the few zones in the game where other players can’t attack you. There is an option in the first settings menu called "mouse push" disable that

Also, here are the steps i had to take to make the game playable:

Download a new UI skin immediately:
I'm using Meekskin 4k. There are probably better ones out there, but I didn't need to follow a youtube video to get it to a point it wasn't frying my brain out.
Link: https://sinistersabotage.com/meekskin/

Set a custom resolution:
Go to your shadowbane game folder (IE: Steam\steamapps\common\Shadowbane) and run the SBconfig to set a custom resolution.

Jack your veiw angle up:
In graphics settings crank view angle all the way up. It helps considerably on modern displays.

the biggest point of jank for me was that all the buttons for the abilities look the same so i could never remember which ability was which. did they fix that?
how is the actual game? i played on SBemu and magicbane a while back and was fairly disappointed by how...static, i guess, everything was. everybody was using mostly the same template characters and it felt like a solved game. no matter what you wanted your character to do, if it was at all viable then the best way to do it had already been minmaxed. have the devs made any balance changes (any at all) since the ancient days?

the steam reviews are full of people talking about pay to win, like you have to pay money to buy conc pots, banestones, trees, etc. is this true, and if so, is it as bad as they make it sound?

No, thats pretty much the same as ever. I use a combination of hotkeys and placing the abilities on the ui in places that remind me of what they do (put the snare next to sprint, defcut next to dstance, ect)

Weird, I never really got the same impression. I think a lot of groups run mino warriors because its easy to play and there are a lot of braindead players. My experience is that there is a huge diversity of builds for small scale stuff and the group composition of large scale stuff slowly changes over weeks with minotaur warriors being a core build.

Conc pots can only be bough through the store. This kinda blows. You can buy all the individual pots that add up to a conc pot ingame instead. We also run buffbots. All the other stuff like stones and trees you can acquire normally ingame by killing r8's or building the tree from a vendor. Conc pots are the only cash shop exclusive item that I know of.

I was just thinking about this game the other day. Playing a centaur crusader as a super tanky nuker was one of my favorite mmo niches I ever got to play. I wouldn’t mind giving this a try again, I love the mentalist flavor of warlock and also like more defensive classes, so it looks like a good pick - why would I choose fighter vs mage warlock?

Jeremor

Drop Your Nuts

Fighter blademaster warlocks can get crazy high defense, while still having some useful debuffs. Mage warlock is more your standard nuker though, yeah. Decent farmers too. It's kind of trading defense for damage I guess.

Cent sader will fit you into the most popular spec groups currently being run though. People love their holy specs

Cool. Is a fighter warlock still hanging in the back line in a bane debuffing and nuking?

Jeremor

Sure, you can do that well enough. Then when there is a melee charge you probably want to get in there and mix it up to throw weapon skills on people.

I'll also say that banes right now can be a shitshow lag wise. Last one I was aware of was so laggy it was impossible to cast spells, so one side simply autoattacked the bane circle down. Hopefully that's not common.

Fighter warlocks are usually extremely high defense melee specialists. They are much better for small scale stuff. I'd recommend playing a mage if you want to nuke stuff.

The nukes will do damage, but you are missing out on the mage offensive stance and mana pool. Defensive builds also don't do great at banes since you will just get spammed with defcuts and blinds so you are usually better off with a good health pool and resists.

e:

I've had this idea for a gimmick build for years but never made it.

Aracoix Fighter Warlock
Ambidexterity
As much int as you can
Skydancer

And then you just chuck mental proc daggers at people while flying. Its obviously gimp since you don't get throwing weapon powers but hey its weird.

i remember back in the day i had a half-giant templar with just enough dex to take ambidextrous at character creation. 60 int for skills, then max con and strength. you'd put Cleansing Fire(?) on a guy to dot him and drain stamina, then just rip him apart with 2x burning blade. it mulched scouts and did okay against minotaurs, i think. if memory serves, there was such effort to make it dual-wielding (as opposed to 2h using the traditional BGS) because dual-wielding had much higher damage.

Eve is a fairly apt analogy. It depends on your role really. If you are playing a warrior, pretty much your only job is to be on target and call for heals/dispels/run away when targetted. Ideally you will also be breaking the support of the other force with powerblocks or stuns (kind of like breaking logi in eve with ECM). Support roles vary a lot. I mostly play bard which has a few jobs:

1) Root or snare stuff off of other support
2) Strip debuffs from friendlies under pressure
3) Strip enemy buffs
4) Run group chants (basically selectable buffs)

Mostly stuff requiring awareness really. Other roles have stuff like debuffs that block healing, focused heals that go though all debuffs, abilities that ground flying enemies, group teleports, ect. Like other games, the smaller the fight, the more nuance there is.

e: I was also level fuckall in that video because it was server up so I only had 2 roots and a dream for abilities. Not sure you will get anything more out of this video, but we get rolled because we had terrible comms and we had a failure in scouting and got flanked. https://twitch.tv/videos/942574597?t=195s

It may not be interracial, but it is black and white.
My friends and I used to play the poo poo outta shadowbane back on live, then magicbane and sbemu. Even played with goons when we were in some nation allied with weird transgendered white supremacists.

I got a bit excited when I saw it pop up on Steam, but reviews were saying that the Chinese company that bought it decided to take the game in a P2W direction by selling endgame gear, conc pots and banes. I don't really care about them selling gear since that isn't a huge deal once you get a city built up, but only being able to get conc pots or banes with real money really annoys me. Conc pots were great for helping cut back on the need for multiboxing buff bots to some degree.

So is the P2W stuff true and how are the microtransactions affecting the game?

Edit: I hopped in discord and talked to Ipsum. Probably gonna end up grabbing my friends and playing later.

Not really a big deal. There are some people paying $90 for a glass bow but all that poo poo still drops normally. The only cash shop exclusive item is the conc pot which turns out to be a minor annoyance but nothing more. The current major issues with the server is the stability and the recent crackdown on mulltiboxing.

Just my 2 cents here:

Big fights like sieges and mine battles tend to be very chaotic and it is hard to pull off skillful combat. A lot of big fights depend on placement and a good command team calling the proper maneuvers and targets in addition to having a well built force.

Tonight we had a mine fight that was roughly 50 verses 50. Our group won the battle because we had good scouts providing intel on the enemy groups movements and then when we engaged we had mage assassins that were able to shadow mantle the targets stopping their healers from being able to heal them.

Smaller fights on the other hand require a lot more skill on the individuals part. Unlike most other mmos these days, pvp is not a rock paper scissors between classes. Two characters with the same race and class can be built and played extremely differently. Player skill and experience is required to identify different playstyles and counter them.

Class and levels definitely factor into the equation during pvp, but it's not just a numbers game. A well played level 50 character can kill a level 75 character and a well played solo player can kill a group of players.

I've been playing this game on and off for years, both on live and then again on the emulators when they came up. I really haven't played any games that have nearly as much depth to character building and pvp.
