Extinction for our time

The current discussion made me curious about the status of Subverse, that bizarrely ambitious Mass Effect-like porn game? Getting ready to launch on March 26th. With a NSFW launch trailer.

Which is kind of confusing, do people really want turn-based combat and space battles in their porn game?

That is a weird combination.

I'd honestly be more interested if it weren't a porn game :v:

I dream of a day and age when nudity and sexual content are as common and usual in games as gratuitous violence is. No one blinks an eye at demons getting blown up and dismembered in Doom/Eternal, yet every ~normal~ game with "people not wearing clothes" always has them wearing underwear even in areas where it would be weird or unnatural.

I dunno what kind of content they're putting in Subverse, but if it's anything like the studios prior work (which is pretty much all rape/torture themed) it's not going to do much to destigmatize adult games

see https://kotaku.com/the-people-who-make-brutal-video-game-porn-1690892332 for background on the developers

Just gotta keep walking down that road.
Combining erotic content and "real" games is definitely nothing new overall, things have mostly just been limited by things like hardware, budgets, and the fact that you couldn't release something like that on most platforms. There are a lot of "real" strategy games with porn for example in Japan especially, likely stemming from the fact that they had more tools and platforms for making and releasing 'em already quite a while ago.

Ultimately people tend to enjoy things they had to work towards more than things they were just handed for no effort, and they're also generally more attracted to people they feel they have some kind of connection with. A game provides both of those things, you have gameplay which has you work towards a reward and you can also have a story to provide context around the characters. It's a pretty natural combination, end of the day.

I think it's a bit more complex a matter than that, like I have to imagine even the most open-minded of people would still rather watch a gory slasher movie than a porn movie with their parents even if they don't consider the latter "worse". But this kind of stuff has progressed a lot too, it's hard to imagine that stuff like San Andreas' Hot Coffee and Mass Effect 1 caused such a media shitshow back in the day.

Not quite like that. I'm more interested in media that just has nudity as a natural part of being a human and living life rather than something to hide and / or be ashamed of or whatever. All those countless games that force underwear as a character model's base skin grind my gears.

These are tough issues since the cultural differences around sexual content tend to be steeper between places than those around violent content. But yeah, like I edited into that post, things have still progressed on that front as we no longer need Geoff Keighley to appear on Fox News to defend Mass Effect's gratuitous pornographic content corrupting our children. Maybe.

This conversation reminds me of people I've met who just discovered nudism and then couldn't stop talking about it at everyone and anyone. Not that there's anything wrong with nudism, of course, I just think it's funny.

Ahaha, no, you're supposed to avoid that guy on your first time through, unless you're a souls-like expert. It's pretty easy, you can just kind around that big open field and sneak right by. He's very similar to the boss of the first level, and isn't a good indication of how hard the game is.

That's kind of the problem with these serious attempts at porn games. Making a extremely detailed porn scene is a few artists to render and a couple of takes for vocals. Making an actual game is months-years of coding and grinding out work, play testing and QA, and hopefully the finished product is fun and/or balanced somehow.

Throwing in a rpg-maker esque "gameplay" portion basically cheapens the whole idea of a porn game because 90% of the effort is on the porn and minimal effort was spent to make a playable game.

Bullet hell was a good idea for a start though. Touhou is basically the reigning and unbeaten goat of bullet hells and that's just one guy. The on planet tactics stuff looks like a 00s PC game and if it isn't a basic point-shoot-ability it'll probably be poo poo. The audio sync with the lip movement also looked weird as poo poo and the female characters are just too comically shaped to take seriously. People got plently horny for Mass Effect and Dragon Age characters and none of them had tits bigger then their heads.

Seriously, the game actively tells you "you don't have to fight this enemy." You can try it anyway, but don't blame the game for it if you choose to ignore its advice there. There are a number other difficult enemies that you also don't have to fight. Running head-first into every brick wall is a decision you very much make for yourself in Nioh 2.

Clearly, we need porn game makers to start integrating game mechanics into the sex scenes. The medium will never advance if they keep treating these as completely segregated elements! (I'm only half joking)

This is largely true, especially now, but there are at least some Japanese PC games that have been more successful at the whole "let's copy Fire Emblem / Nobunaga's Ambition / Wizardry, except with porn" angle...to the point they can then be ported over to consoles without the porn and don't lose too much in the process.

There's a famous one that's a franchise with multiple titles I can't quite remember the name of that's basically some rear end in a top hat knight conquering the surround lands and he bangs/rapes all the sexy anime women he encounters.

Record of Agarest War kind of came off as a porn game but seemed more to be a weird srpg about making babies rather then some hardcore sex stuff.

I think my favorite thing about Loop Hero so far is how well its story and gameplay integrate with each other. Our hero is remembering the world and everything in it. You start the game with only the bare basics - a barren road, yourself, slimes. You remember more and more - meadows, mountains, vampires - and as you defeat the first boss and rebuild and unlock more mechanics, the game deepens and offers so much stuff that by the third boss' loop you have so many cards and abilities and things to improve that you're spoiled for choice in strategies!

I really like how well things flow into each other. My favorite build at the moment is necromancer because I get magic hp and a gold card that gives me bonus hp based on how many things with a soul I kill, then I stack the deck with enemies that have souls and deserts that reduce the hp of everything. Put in some supplies to increase my healing, get lucky with level up choices and it becomes a ridiculous tank whose main failing so far has just been me playing too loose with chrono crystals and ruins.

You really have to listen to the rhythm of the music on this one. I actually found the "get, set" indicators too distracting, I had to mentally filter them out, and just listen to the beat. It takes a few tries, but eventually you remember how the song flows and can follow it more naturally when it kicks up. I went from a C, to a C+, to a B+, and I only did as badly on that last one because I slipped up on one of the transitions from fast to medium beat.

I don't think the "Ready get set" helps that much other than let you know on set it's a new rhythm. I just played that one to remember what it was like and I tapped it out with my foot while I played it. It helped but this game gets so much harder than that one, so I was like breezing through it.

Oh my god, I just started the 2-X boss immediately after that one. Yeah, forget tracking that visually at all. Get used to following the beat aurally.

Edit: Actually, part of the issue that I thought was part of the boss initially is that (mechanical spoilers for 2-X) the game is forced into windowed mode, which for some reason is making it stutter really bad. Turning off vsync helped a little bit to make it faster, but it's still stuttering and going slow inconsistently. Strange.
