Lost his leg in Robo War I
Yeah, I dunno. I grew up around criminals, and the point of “dangerous men can seem charming and noble until you discover how they aren’t” isn’t lost on me. I’ve even written a story along those lines, and it even included sexual assault as a plot point as well!

But it doesn’t work for me when Takeshi does it. Something is lost in the execution. It’s jarringly disparate from the rest of the movie, and maybe that’s the point, but it spoils the whole work for me and I don’t really buy “you’re not SUPPOSED to come away having enjoyed yourself” or whatever when Sonatine has a hypermasculine revenge/“warrior’s end” fantasy as its climax.

It has a violent revenge at its climax, but as with the rest of the film, look at his face when he's doing it. Every time he kills his face is completely blank, his body almost motionless. He leaves his glorious revenge as miserable as he was before.

The only time he has an expression other than blankness on his face while pulling a trigger is when he pretends to shoot himself during the Russian roulette scene.

I expected it to be weird just because of what it is. But the earlier part of the movie lulls you into this sense that you're going to see something kind of underwhelming which then leaves you completely unprepared for the rest of the movie.

Heads up there's apparently gonna be an amazon workers' strike from the 8th to the 15th so if you can, try not to purchase from Amazon during that week.

Oh poo poo, its's been awhile since we've had one those. I remember a year back or so they happened like once every six months, everybody on Twitter would be like, "one day Amazon strike in two weeks, don't buy from Amazon or use Twitch. Don't cross the picket line!" And then absolutely nothing would happen.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't ordering during the strike be the best way to put pressure on Amazon? Like, they get a lot of orders they can't meet because their workers are on strike. Not ordering to me sounds as if the garbage collection is going on strike and to support them you urge everybody not to produce any garbage.

No, because Amazon would use the increased business as an excuse to replace the striking workers with scabs. By not buying anything you’re showing that you respect the workers more than the corporation and that you’re willing to weather some temporary inconvenience to both cause a hit to their income and support the wishes of the striking workers.

You ordering from Amazon gives money to Amazon. Ideally the strike would cause business to slow or shut down, as no products go out the door and no money comes in. If Amazon has significantly less money coming in, they would be forced to the bargaining table. A backup at the fulfillment centers would be a problem, but it could get smoothed out pretty quickly. Especially in a strike like this when they have already said they're only doing it for a week and will be back to work right after.

All of this is assuming this is an actual strike and not just another Twitter meme, of course.

A day is going to make gently caress-all difference. A full boycott would do it. I confess to having Amazon Prime but other than that I can’t recall when I last used Amazon.

Thanks for the answers. I buy from Amazon very infrequently but I'm happy to not do it at all during a time where it could support the workers.

For real, Amazon is so loving rife with counterfeiters and dodgy pricing that finding what you actually want or need is a huge pain in the rear end, its easier these days to just find smaller online stores with less loving chaff to wade through.

The last time I bought from Amazon was when I got a gift card for it for Christmas but once in a while they’ll have some toy that’s an exclusive there or whatever.

The most I ever really needed amazon was when I was doing a film and needed a prop or some kind of make up thing ASAP and couldn’t find it locally.

Sorry for interrupting Amazon chat for a moment.

I'm usually watching movies on my 5.1 setup, which is ok but not amazing. The last few movies though I watched with my headphones and... I immediately noticed the fade-out at the end of a each line of dialog. Like the actor says their last word and their audio level is brought down gradually but quickly to zero. Obviously this is done to avoid a hard cut and make sure no weird noises are picked up, but now I can't "un-notice" this and it's a bit distracting. Is it always like this or were these just particularly bad? I think Promising Young Woman was the last one.

That’s fine, only I didn’t ask why, I asked what specifically you were buying that you couldn’t find online elsewhere. It doesn't quite work though because in Being John Malkovich they're using some kind of magic portal where as the bad guys in Get Out are just swapping out people's brains. The obvious similarity in concept never occurred to me though and that's an interesting comparison. It's also entirely possible that the former film was an influence on Peele.
