I'm not one for scolding my fellow poors for shopping at Amazon for the same reason that I dont scold my fellow poors for shopping at Walmart, their whole business model is to muscle out competition and consequently there is less choice for the average consumer. If I was the cool middle-class dude I was ten years ago when I lived in Toronto then I could wander down to Kensington Market or wander down Bloor street and buy all sorts of poo poo, now I'm a family-having struggler with one semi-functional car and a job and family that takes up all my time, so I shop at soul-sucking places like Walmart and exploitative monsters like Amazon. My Amazon purchases are normally crafty things for the kids to mess around with, or board games, or even books (!), I dont buy cheap blu-rays and xbox games, but so the gently caress what if I did? This sounds angrier than it should do really, and I'm pretty sensitive to all the negativity on these forums (I like stalking CineD because its generally an oasis from all that), so I wanna make it clear I'm not attacking OP. It just rankles me when consumers of these places (predominantly the working poor) are attacked for doing so.

The obvious similarity in concept never occurred to me though and that's an interesting comparison. It's also entirely possible that the former film was an influence on Peele. There's no reason they can't have both though.

If I came off as scolding people for buying poo poo from Amazon, I apologize. Basically what I'm getting as is the whole prime day boycott thing is performative bullshit that doesn't really accomplish anything (and I'm pretty sure the striking workers actually don't want people to do it in the first place because it invites the company to bring in scabs among other reasons). I 100% understand why people wouldn't have much choice to shop on Amazon and mentioned that in my post. My own personal choice is to just not buy stuff from them because I never purchased anything important from them when I did still buy poo poo from them. I know it's not going to bring down Jeff Bezos if I don't buy blu-rays from his company a few times a year, I just prefer not to spend my money there and I can get any of that goofy poo poo at or near the same price pretty much anywhere else on the internet that sells that poo poo.

I am with this 100%. I am in the fortunate position that I can spend a bit more time and money searching for things on alternatives to Amazon. I fully understand that not everyone can do so and would never judge someone in those circumstances. I would like people to be aware of the issues with Amazon, and that there are alternatives (like bookshop.org), and to make up their own minds as to whether to they need to continue using Amazon or not. It's cheap and easy (that's their business model), and many people can't afford the time or money to look for alternatives. Yeah, the bizarre thing about the “Amazon strike” is that it appears to have been created out of whole cloth by an online meme account, directly against the wishes of the workers’ organization.

The opposite is true - if the union asks for a boycott and people don’t do it anyways, then the company has lost a chunk of its labor force and is encouraged to hire scabs to make up for it. If the company loses demand in proportion to how many people are withholding their labor, then the boycott is significantly more effective.

For example you can't make a movie where someone goes back in time and stops the the foundation of the PRC, you can make movies about going to meet your mom or go solve mysteries in the Tang dynasty or whatever.
