Its my car, the law doesnt disallow turning it into some sort of stationary dynamo despite it not being its original intended purpose.

Mining and crypto can be handled responsibly and no one in the thread was encouraging anything else.

I don't think "the law in my country allows me to carry out this activity" equates to "it's good etiquette to post about this activity in a thread where many people feel like it is cannibalizing their hobby, and who find reading posts about it tiring at best and distasteful and offensive at worst". We're going round in circles at this point so I'll stop engaging but I really think a little compassion would go a long way here.

I love megathreads which is why I came back here instead of reddit crap, I love being able to go into the GPU thread & find the fist goons buying 970s (which now sell for inflated prices!!) and have it all contiguous.

I just think a lot of fields move incredibly fast now, and also the hobby had a really nice peak a few years ago where there weren't too many weird options, parts were plentiful, Newegg was good, etc.

I think megathreads shouldn't be necessarily expected to give everyone an intro to the topic like in Games, where ideally you're trying to get people to learn about the game. But I dont expect the OP of the Home Networking Thread to be consistently updated like Wirecutter reviews. I guess I'm saying most of the old OPs don't bother me at all.

Maybe like in the parts picking thread just some really basics that guide people on how to ask questions and get help, rather than try to cover the entire topic of PC building?

I have no issues with SH/SC moderation.

I would like to see a new Computer Chairs thread with an OP who is knowledgeable and keeps it updated.

While I like the GPU Megathread, it could be better about lower/mid-end card discussions.

Thank you for reading my feedback.

Some folks seem to be extremely passionate about having 3 generic it threads instead of just one because "it will be too much to read".

I agree with this. As an IT thread regular, merging the threads with a bunch of constant posts I don't want to read about will make me unfollow it.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

This thread is reminding me how annoying it is that cryptocurrency people have largely hijacked the word "crypto" from the cryptography people. It's just like the motorcyclists who keep trying to appropriate the word "bike" from bicyclists. :argh:

Anyway, as for moderation, it's practically invisible in most of the sh/sc threads that I lurk. Things seem largely self-policing, which is nothing short of a miracle on today's Internet. So, no particular complaints or requests there, just a thank you to the mods who watch over this space for us.

In general I have few or no complaints about the state of SH/SC moderation. I do have some opinions on some of the topics under discussion.

I don't read the GPU thread, so I don't have a dog in this race, but it sounds like there are two separate questions: 1. Is cryptocurrency an acceptable topic in SH/SC? and 2. If so, are there particular topics that are not acceptable? We can all weigh in, but at the end of the day someone is going to have to make an executive decision and both camps are going to have to live with it. I personally wish all cryptocurrency would disappear forever tomorrow, but if the mods decide it's okay, then I'll have to accept that, and if the decision goes the other way the crypto people are going to have to do the same.

If cryptocurrency is an allowable topic and there are specific topics that we don't want -- say, people actively scalping video cards -- say so and ban anyone talking about them.

Either way, I don't think cryptocurrency bullshit belongs in the GPU thread. Do people use GPUs to mine cryptocurrencies? Sure. People use computer hardware to watch porn but we don't let people discuss their favorite porn in the hardware thread. Topics like availability of GPUs are pretty self-evidently germane to "normal" (i.e., non-cryptocurrency) GPU usage and I think they belong in that thread even if the cryptocurrency people also derive benefit from them. If cryptocurrency discussion is allowed then it should have its own thread and, much as it pains me, people trolling them should also be probated or banned.

RE: the ~3 huge SH/SC threads: The "Working in IT" thread is its own beast and shouldn't be merged. That gets used for career questions, technical questions that don't fit in a different pre-existing topic, etc. The "poo poo that pisses you off" and "A ticket came in" threads are much closer. I do not personally care if they are merged or not, although they are distinct enough that I post different stuff in each of them.

RE: Megathreads, I like them but I also derive a lot of value from the OPs being a one-stop shop for common questions and I would very strongly prefer that those OPs be large effort-posts and also reasonably up to date. The practice of OPs like that is a huge plus to the SA forums generally. If you don't want to maintain the OP, let someone else make the thread. If the OP is out of date and the thread poster isn't updating it, get someone to make a new one and then close the old one. The people in those threads are perfectly capable of discussing briefly and determining that the OP is out of date. It is really annoying to have a "what to buy" guide that was last updated in 2011. Yes, technology changes quickly, but you don't need to update the OP more than a couple times a year. How often do you think the go-to recommendation for a new router changes?

I think it is generally fine and funny 99% of the time but there are occasionally posts or things that get linked which have the potential to blow up into Internet Culture War. Stuff like discussing the 8bit guy being a Texas gun rights activist kinda thing.

If it hasn't been any trouble ever that's great, I just wanted to touch base so you're not going "why the gently caress do we even have a youtube thread in SH/SC and what the hell happened to cause a trazillion reports" if something does happen down the road.

e: and i think it would be a shame if the answer to that was "well we shouldn't have a youtube thread" when it's one of my favourites and it's specifically because it's in this forum with the other posters here.

I don't think it makes sense to have two GPU threads split like that: would a new or returning builder have to post in one thread to figure out which card they want, then post in another thread to figure out how to get it in the 2021 hellscape?

i'd like to point out again that the gpu thread was fine and rarely had coin chat until early january when coin prices spiked. the misconception that's being pushed that it's the reason behind demand and thus should be the central topic of the thread doesn't mesh with reality

if it's that important to the posters then make their own thread for the topic

The problem with "just make your own thread about crypto" is that those threads tend to devolve really quickly because people who hate crypto just love to poo poo things up. I'm all for a crypto thread in SH/SC if it was properly moderated.

if there is a thread in sh/sc for discussing crypto i wouldn't go in there ever, just like I don't ever go into the comics forum or the Linux thread. I would actually like to learn more about the technology side and hear less about the prices, so if it turns into a resource like the NAS thread - cool/

if people post in other threads about crypto, normal standards on forums bullying should apply (its usually good as long as its not gendered/racist/abled/classist/etc)

That's maybe a bit extreme, but I think there's definitely an argument to be had that mining is a function of GPUs. I personally don't feel like it's the intended function of GPUs and probably not in the spirit of a thread about them.

Now seems like a better time than ever for a separate crypto thread in this subforum though! Especially with the recent NFT boom. I think whoever sets up a thread like that should brace for people wanting to dunk on crypto though (just like people might dunk on a bad or otherwise controversial video game in a video game thread). There isn't any getting around the fact that it's a super controversial topic.
