Intrigued enough about NDRA and TLSA to want to get in on them, but neither seem to be available through my broker (Wealth Simple). What other options are there? Preferably one that'd let me move funds in right away instead of making me wait a few days. I'm in Canada.

Questrade is the most popular and fairly cheap, virtual brokers is also a decent pick although there are some additional fees for trading US stocks (I think it’s 15$/quarter for a USD account). I trade with VB because I have a grandfathered penny/share account, not sure if they still offer that. No idea if you have to wait a few days or whatever unfortunately.

If you have over 100,000 that you’re investing stop reading this thread and talk to a professional look into Interactive Brokers.

I’m surprised you can’t buy TSLA with wealthsimple, but their conversion fees are pretty bad anyway.

here's my current ETF watchlist for anyone looking to construct a mid/long-term portfolio. this excludes some reference benchmarks I have in another panel such as SPY, QQQ, IWM, TLT, etc. not included is a bitcoin or ether fund such as GBTC because I expect the SEC to approve an actual, real, BTC ETF in the next few months, or people to just hold their BTC elsewhere. also not included are meme funds like weed funds. there are so many thematic funds out there it's pointless (and unnecessary) to try and track them all on a daily basis. edit: also not included are leveraged or inverse ETFs because that screws with sorting of them by daily % returns in my app (just adds noise)

in that list of under 100 ETFs, you have options to take on pretty much any broad market condition you can imagine by using a half dozen or fewer of the ETFs. they're all liquid, too, in terms of trading volume, AUM, and/or daily bid/ask sizes. the one exception to liquidity is FRDM, kinda low liquid there, but it's growing and way too interesting of a fund to not have in the list.

if anyone wants to champion a particular ETF not listed above, let me know, I'm interested in hearing about it!

Yeah, great at getting us into Wawa.
Someone asked recently if there were any penny stocks worth throwing a few bucks at, and one I saw that looked interesting is GSV.

Here's a good and recent review of the company - link: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4412761-gold-standard-ventures-valuation-remains-attractive-after-drop

Article summary:

quote:

The biggest two issues for Gold Standard Ventures over the years have been overvaluation and significant share dilution, but after an 80% decline, the former problem has been fixed. The latter issue is also no longer an issue, given that Gold Standard is sitting on ~$46 million in cash. With a new team in place, a project sitting in the #1 mining jurisdiction globally, and a Feasibility Study that's on the way in 2021, Gold Standard looks like a solid bet for a small speculative position. Currently, there are a few names that offer more upside and more attractive projects. Still, at a ~$204 million valuation for Gold Standard, I see the stock as medium-risk high-reward, a material improvement from high-risk, high-reward from 2018 to 2020.

I could use some opinions for eliminating names from the list. if anyone here sees an account in the list that they think is low-quality garbage or just always wrong about the markets/economy, please let me know, I will nominate it for deletion.

Thank you for posting that pmchem. I started following the list when you posted it at a previous time and I've honestly been struggling a bit with it. I won't name account names though, I think the problem is me. It is indeed extremely busy, the amount of noise is thundering. Why do news accounts think they have to post everything in caps lock? Why do journalists think they're broadcasting and have to fill dead air by relentless output?

I use twitter all the time and I do find good market information there from time to time, but it's like drinking from a fire hose with four other fire hoses pointed at you as well.

So I would like cherry pick tips for news accounts that let you know what's going on (macro, market events) that aren't too noisy, but if you haven't got any I don't blame you. There is a bad culture of everyone trying to be a CNBC on their own.

Yep, my issue as well. Honestly I want to find someone who just posts m&a deal news for publicly traded companies. I've got one that shouts about random 10mm+ private acquisitions, but that doesn't help at loving all. Mostly these are announced after hours, but when someone does a deal in the middle of the day, I'd like to be able to see it asap.

WWheeeeeee!
I just started trading options this week. It took Fidelity almost 6 weeks to approve me because they're so backed up with new accounts. It turned out this was a good thing, as it forced me to actually learn about options for 6 weeks before diving in. I also joined an options 101 FB group, and holy poo poo, the amount of people actively trading with no goddamn clue as to what they are doing is frightening. I'm probably leaving that one soon as I've been doing more teaching than learning, but it is an ok place to ask questions (provided they aren't super lazy ones like "what's a put?").

My existing portfolio is super heavy on SQ, which is great because I loaded up on it like 2 years ago and the gains have been insane, but I think it's losing momentum, and I'll probably tap out to free up the capital soon. Curious if anyone else here is still holding it and has an exit point in mind. I think it still has room to run, I just think I'll be able to make better use of the money it's tying up right now. I'm both fascinated by options and mad that I didn't get into them sooner. Ignoring the WSB style YOLO plays, just plain old boring basics like selling covered calls makes for a nice addition to the toolbox. I'm sticking with moves that have very well defined and capped risks until I have more experience, but I do plan to allocate a small % of my available cash to a weekly lottery ticket just for fun.

I'm using Active Trader Pro as a platform. Are there other options that work with Fidelity that may be better, or are you basically stuck with their tools? A friend/mentor swears by IB, and once I'm doing this actively and with enough capital to make it worthwhile, I may jump over to them. It's just not worth it for single contract trades while I learn though.

You're basically stuck. I just moved from Fidelity to TDAmeritrade to be able to use their ThinkOrSwim desktop app, Active Trader Pro doesn't seem to be maintained very well and causes my Mac to immediately use all available resources.

Which is kind of weird since all it would have taken to provide a stimulus check for everyone was one or two GOP Senators getting on board with the idea. I guess its a good examples of how the GOP's very good public relations machine is going to trip up the Democrats though.

Yah, those are the three stocks they recommend. To be fair, what else is there really, aside from NDRA and weed penny stocks?

I'm new to this all too but as far as I can tell there's a few schools of thought money all competing for your dough:

Volatile daytradables (varies enough you can buy low sell high within a day and turn a profit)
Medium term/weektrading investables (i think ___ is in a slump but will recover/turnaround in the near future)
Looooonng term holds. (this company isn't going anywhere, is solid, and will pay dividends/grow/be worth more over the next year or few).
Then, if you have options, there's other opportunities like day trading options on volatile stocks, or looking for stable ones to Wheel on, or just doing long-term investing with 2 year calls, or the poor man's covered call.

From what I've seen poking around the next speculation might be in Uranium, as there's a good chance we see nuclear power coming back with Biden's clean energy plan. DNN is the next sundial, maybe, for example.

I will say the options chain on the fidelity website looks cleaner/scrolls faster than the ATP one(which I've been using); its only crime is it doesn't have an auto-update in frame so you have to refresh everything.

What I could use a hand with is getting charts set up in active trader. There's so many settings/indicators it is a little overwhelming. What are the most critical/your faves, besides VWAP?

Does anyone have experience with options through Vanguard? Is it easy or hard?

When I tried to see if I could get options enabled, i clicked the link to go to the application form, and it didn’t actually exist.

Vanguard was pretty simple to get level 2, I just filled out the thing here. Make sure to be signed in first otherwise it goes nowhere.

Scroll down to "Complete an option application"

Vanguard's interface is terrible for options, I use fidelity active trader pro to look at options chains and then put the orders in on vanguard since that's where most of my money is.

Thinking about a VXX call. It's at the 52 week low and it feels like everyone's decided the badtimes are over.

I’m buying into the thought that 18 and 19 March are going to have some wild vol.

I am not very good at options, but 4/1 $14 call is what I'm looking at right now. Will probably only hold until the end of the week to see if there's a spike or not.

It's way too early to call the next Presidential Election, four year's is a long rear end time, and every four years we forget how long it is.
