Amazon has both a Lord of the Rings and a Wheel of Time series coming out this year. Seems a bit odd that they haven't released anything on either of them, seeing how it's already spring. You'd think that they would put as much space as possible between them to not cannibalize each others hype, in which case they should probably get on it. Or maybe one of them is bumped til next year and it just hasn't been announced. A black box strategy of production and even premise feels very risky for LotR especially.

This all makes total sense because you can basically just shoot the first WoT book immediately after the sets and costumes are done with filming LotR. I joke, but I do hope it's decent. WoT that is, I don't really think LotR needs to be remade.

The LotR series is set an age before the trilogy, so at least it's not material we've seen on screen before. Rumor has it that it revolves around the forging of all the magic rings. I just wish it had more established talent behind the scenes so we could have a guage as to what kind of show it's going to be. I can't imagine it won't just ape the Jackson movies.

Isn't there some weird Tolkien estate rights situation where they can set it in Middle-Earth, but they can't use any established characters or stories for adaptation? So it can't be about the ring forging, I think. I'm sure they will find some way to finagle it in there regardless.

Or the Fable video games, where you follow a typical fantasy realm from the medieval period into the industrial revolution over the course of the three games.

The first trilogy was typical fantasy technology but the second one is full on industrial revolution Mistborn also had a bad guy who was purposefully keeping technological advances in check by banning stuff. Speaking of fantasy TV, NK Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy is being developed as a TV series. The first book, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, takes place in a world with a continent spanning empire that rules because they literally have God on their side. The main character is a young woman who is summoned to the capitol where she learns that she is the granddaughter of the current emperor and has been named his new heir (which is a problem for the other two people who were also heirs.) Doing the trilogy as a TV series will be kind of weird though as the books span hundreds of years and the main character from the first book doesn't really figure into the later two. Also I'll believe it will happen when it actually airs as Broken Earth was also supposed to get a TV series but that hasn't happened yet.

Apparently Colbert spouted off what he thinks the Amazon series should be to an Amazon exec and they clammed up and walked away from him. https://youtu.be/aoWzGYNyPPY He either hit the nail on the head or made the guy realize they made a grave mistake attempting it.
