All ya’ll talking about Polanski or Allen 25+ years ago remember there was no internet. The papers only announce his clearance, and past issues weren’t available without actual research. If there was enough talking about whatever bullshit was thrown into the wind people simply wouldn’t know. So you get a lot of people repeating what they heard. IMO that’s why they both had so many defenders until relatively recently when any idiot could find reality on the internet. Also, goddamn now that I think about it the good friends in high school that talked about Polanski’s innocence, liked that Winger song 17, and knew all the details about Tracy Lord’s (underage) porn career were one guy, not multiple guys. Quite creeped out now.

Why? Because he’s fuckin’ LEMMY. He wrote in his book that he made more money writing those songs than all the years in Motörhead up to that point.

Hollywood's endless supply of very tall, handsome, slightly charismatic but fundamentally forgettable white guys makes the claims of 'how are we supposed to find a cast member of X ethnicity?' much funnier. I remember when Expanse was casting it's second season, and there was a lot of 'where are they going to find a tall, muscular, polynesian actress?' fuckin' polynesia, dipshit. I recall when Roma was being heavily critically acclaimed there were a bunch of established Mexican actresses of European descent bitching that Yalitza Aparicio wasn't even a real actress and all that sort of classist, racist bullshit. I won't say anyone can be an actor, but at the same time it's not the sort of thing you need 12 years experience and a master's degree to do. And before anyone says, "well the true mark of an actor is versatility, and the ability to perform multiple different roles," that's not entirely wrong, but look at how many famous actors only ever play one character with minor variations. And that very much seems to favour white men.

Ghost Leviathan posted:I feel like that's part of the reason you get so much awful doubling down from people trying to drown out their guilt. Oh that's absolutely a part of it. Denial feels good and accepting the truth feels bad so often people dive head first into denial when confronted with an unpleasant reality. Avoiding negative emotions is easier than going through the work of processing them, even though long term that's what's healthier. I think a lot of that comes from a lack of emotional intelligence, and I don't mean that as an insult. People are for the most part not taught how to deal with their feelings, which creates a lot of serious problems when people lash out or react in destructive ways to negative experiences because they don't know appropriate was to handle what they're going through. Like, I'm not trying to excuse those kind of behaviors, just explain why they happen.
