It's been discussed a little upthread.

I saw one episode and bounced off, but other people liked it, apparently.

One massive problem is that the enemies get less characterization than Doctor Hell, which is a pretty big deal for a real robot anime.

Yeah, I was the person doing the discussing. And I agree with you about that problem - even called it out myself - although hopefully that's going to change whenever the second season eventually comes out.

It's not bad but it definitely would have benefitted from a few more episodes. They hinged a lot on that second season that's certainly not happened yet.

This is honestly a huge problem with every show written by Rooster Teeth. It's fine when Red Vs Blue was a bunch of random sketches with the barest plot to justify new scenarios, but when the later seasons got plot heavy it got dumb real fast and the villains were barely explored.

And then there's RWBY. So I guess it does track that GenLOCK would have the same problem.

RWBY has done quite a bit of exploring the villains' motivations and personalities starting in Volume 4 and running all the way through to the currently-airing Volume 8, so while you could defensibly argue that they took too long to get to it, it is something they have done. And that's all I'll say on the topic, since this is the mecha thread and RWBY is not mecha.

True enough. It just does feel like a recurring issue in RT shows.

Anyhow, I remember a show with a robot called Dan from Thursday. Gun X Sword? I watched a couple episodes and rolled my eyes at the lady whose name was just her breast measurements. Should I pick it back up?

Absolutely this.

I really like post-human sci-fi bullshit, so I was really interested in Julian's whole situation. But similar to above, they staged a bunch of questions about that without having the time to properly explore them afterward.

Also, I thought the personalized mech designs were lackluster at best. The color-coded generic mechs they had earlier felt more consistent with the setting to me.

Gun X Sword is real good and has one of my favorite one-off Vignette episodes in all of anime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7RbK7Ekn2U

GunxSword is a show where in retrospect i enjoyed the broad strokes of most episodes and characters, whether "episodic" or main plot, but the experience of watching the show often felt like a slog. still have not put a finger on why though. the dub didn't seem distractingly bad, production quality was definitely middling so battles weren't always engaging, otherwise i guess it suffered from overly-long final arc and how unpleasant and stupid Van was for most of the show? that stuff definitely paid off in the end but getting there wasn't easy.

i also gotta complain about the Original Seven designs because it feels like they designed Dann first and then decided the others should just all share the aesthetic. it works well enough on Dann but blowing it out to six others just leaves you with a bunch of ugly crap. the show otherwise has great varied designs like Eldora/Brownie/Volkein and even minor and one-off designs like the drone knights from the end of the series or the mech they fight at the hotel.

I just read this whole thread in about two days so now it's 3 am and I'm wondering why you don't see more western properties digging into mecha for shows. They're well represented in video games and tabletop with Battletech and 40K titans but in film and television you're options are incredibly limited if you don't care for Transformers.

Pacific Rim The Black is kind of a turn off for me because it looks like the Godzilla Planet of the Monsters anime movies and those sucked. Uprising was lame.

First off, The Black is far, far, superior to the Godzilla anime. Don't let visual similarities put you off.

Next, we've had some amazing 40K fan video in recent years.

Power armor is like a small mech, right ? This video is by one artist. Concept, modeling, animation, and especially sound design. No, we aren't expected to know what's really going on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVXEYksoE6c

And this has titans in it, those definitely are mechs. An Imperator-class counts as whatever it wants to. An artist took the audio book of Helsreach and animated it. The style evolves as he goes through it, but it started good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKMdHfOC7VQ

The really, really good news is that both of those artists now work for Games Workshop Animation. The Helsreach creator is doing a Blood Angels series. The Astartes creator... they should just give him as much money, drugs, and equipment as he needs and let him do whatever the hell he wants.

And there's more, GW is getting into animation and they're doing it by pulling in the top fan talent. It's a brilliant move, and a rare one for any IP holder go outside for creative talent.

Yeah a couple years ago they had a change of management and last year they did a massive purge and kicked a lot of their lovely fans to the curb during the Floyd protests. They're still grossly over expensive with their products but I do respect them trying to clean up their act. The best of their Black Library extended universe stuff treats the Imperium as a horrible, horrible place and only the worst bits of fluff still openly embrace the fascism. Most of their middling bolter porn novels just stick to violent nihilism typical of military SF rather than saying "the space nazis are right".

They do need to do more stuff with Titans and Knights to get my mecha vibes going. Titanicus is the peak, followed by Helsreach but there actually aren't many stories that focus heavily on the God Machines.

It was never a satire. It was always just dumb. 40k is and always has been intentionally dumb and ridiculously over the top. The worshippers of the god of blood and skulls have giant robots called the Lord of Skulls that is full of blood and skulls, It has a cannon in the crotch that fires boiling blood and its right arm is a cannon that shoots giant skulls that explode into shrapnel and the shrapnel is flaming skulls.

Early 40K had extensive cross-pollination with 2000AD - many of the key personalities during its development were either 2000AD writers or friends of 2000AD writers, and that magazine always revolved around satire through goofy sci-fi excess. The Thoughts For The Day in the early editions of the rulebook are a dark mockery of fascist thought straight out of Judge Dredd or Nemesis the Warlock.

Should be noted that 2000 AD, Judge Dredd 40K and many other works of the time were all born in England during the reign rule of Margaret Thatcher, and were a reaction to, and mockery of, her hardcore right wing stances.

The first edition released back in 1987 that was more a RPG with miniatures rules than a miniatures game very much was satire, and even some of the stuff from 2e like the infamous character named after Margaret Thatcher fell into that though late 2e was starting to take itself too seriously and it just went downhill from there. I'm glad to hear GW is trying to get the Nazis out but as long as their hero empire is a bunch of racists with skulls out the rear end they're always going to be highly suspect.

Well, "hero".

(Depending on the author and the story, the exact number of quotation marks varies.)

For the last few years, they've been running the Regimental Standard, an in-universe propaganda newsletter that's basically "it's funny because the Imperium is terrible and constantly lies to try to try to cover up its failures."

It seems weird to say that 40k started going downhill after Rogue Trader since Rogue Trader was barely anything. Some incoherent fluff and ancient metal models. Hell, Ghaghkull being named after Margaret Thatcher is just a fan theory, the actual writers have denied it.

And 40k stuff doesn't really depict the Imperium as a hero empire. It falls into thinking Space Marines are just the coolest thing a little too often, but the Imperium itself is pretty much always depicted as a monstrous organization that destroys human life on an unimaginable scale.

I'm pretty sure the guy who wrote Goshogun and Time Etranger (Takeshi Shudo) went on to write the first series on Pokemon, and planned to have it end with Pikachu leading a revolt against humanity, with Meowth as his ambassador.

He also wrote Minky Momo, which had (spoilers) Momo being killed by a toy truck in response to toy sponsors pulling their support for the show

Getter Emperor's depiction really varied by series in the original saga. Sometimes it was a symbol of hope and interconnectedness, sometimes it was the doom of the universe.

Even in Arc, though, it was on humanity's side. It's just that speaks... less than entirely well of humanity.
