It's worth noting that Sokpop is a cooperative collective that have been making 2 games a month for quite a while now and throwing them $3/month on Patreon gets you both of them, effectively making all their games 50% off and giving you both an itch.io version and a Steam key ($12 total value for $3). They're in the process of transitioning to making a single, larger $6 game each month with the buy-in price remaining the same. They've touched on all sorts of genres and even arguably invented a few, and each of the games can easily keep you entertained for a few hours. They're currently making $6k/month split between five guys which is apparently just enough for them to survive doing this full time, and I'd easily recommend supporting them. It's one of the few monthly subscriptions I pay for that I never question the value of and have never even considered cancelling.

I've been having quite a bit of fun with Mr. Prepper, it's not super deep but it's got enough going on to stay interesting. I see a lot of complaints about the food/sleep system, which I get, but its honestly pretty easy to prepare (:v:) yourself well enough to completely negate them. Sleep for instance, you start off with a bunch of energy drinks that fill your meter a bunch, and within a few weeks you can be drying your own guarana and be drowning in energy drinks. For food, you can go out to the woods, pick a bunch of blueberries, make a dozen smoothies, then live off that for a shockingly long time.

The government inspection thing is interesting as well, hovering over each item says how many of them are allowed or expected by the G-man. Melting all your boxes for iron, for instance, will make the G-man suspicious since hey, what did you do with those boxes, guy known by the government to be a genius at macguyvering poo poo together?

Later on it gets more interesting, for example a single planter outside wont raise suspicion, meaning you can plant a crop outdoors without needing powered lights, and rain will water it for you. It's janky but a lot of fun considering the price.

I'm really enjoying Mr. Prepper. It's a bit grindy, but I enjoy managing my time: right now do I want to get more food, or do I want to get more metal so I can build a generator? Similarly, I can scavenge some materials from my house, but if I scavenge too many, or if I leave incriminating materials around the house, the secret policeman who comes by to check on me will be mad. The political snippets are fun (for grim values of fun) and the backgrounds for the various areas are pretty and varied. I do wind up doing more pixel-hunting than I'd like.

I got it because House Flipper recommended it and offered a bundle. If you like House Flipper, you'll probably have fun; it's got a similar build-a-room-furnish-a-room vibe, with bonus resource scavenging. If you're looking for a serious exploration of a post-apocalyptic world, walk on by.

Apparently you can select to breed so your fish only grow to be tiny sized adults too.

I played this and found a number of issues. Rebel camps in the beginning of the game if your capitol is near a border might spawn outside your national borders and be invisible and just spew an endless stream of units into your capitol area. I were also allied with the US but not once did they offer up some uranium for my power plant. My ministers were also really angry about public safety, even when the value was 6 they kept on saying "why don't you care about public safety" and as a result stopped researching child labor.
The movement of units feels ... sticky? For lack of a better word. When I select a unit and want them to move it feels like half the time they can't be bothered and I'll have to click them again and get them to move. Same for unit attack.

Some quality of life improvements: Make rebel units red or purple or another color than regular units, allow for instant movement of your units so I don't have to watch them trudge along the desert, quicker unlock of ministers. After one game and only being halfway towards the next minister I don't want to play anymore.

Inspector Waffles proves there's still plenty of room for "old-fashioned" notions such as good, funny writing and an engaging plot. Whilst it may follow a fashionable trend of animal detectives at the moment (which the game itself nods to) it's elevated by some very sharp writing, believable and well-developed characters and a plot that for the most part you'll follow and want to discover until the end. The pixel art mixed with the hand-drawn cutscenes look great and the sound is well suited to each environment and not annoying. [...] My only tiny criticism is having to sometimes go through conversations more than once to show characters clues you've discovered, but you can skip dialogue so this is a very minor thing. Let's hope to see more Inspector Waffles soon!

quote:

Masterpiece? Nah. It's a good adventure game, though. The artwork is really good, the voice acting is not so good. It's like they gave the voice actors scripts without any pronunciation notes and they all recorded independently.

At the very least I like the setting for this. I watched a bit of gameplay, though, and the combat looks kind of dull, particularly the attack animation seems extremely basic and unsatisfying to me. And there's some annoying character quipping at you like all the time, I had enough of it within two minutes. I feel really petty saying that but we've such an abundance of games nowadays that even a petty complaint can often be the difference between buying something or not.

Put it on my wishlist for now.
