That episode where Daria leads an anti-communist rally at the coffee house felt like brain whiplash when i rewatched it last fall.

E: Ok watched the episode. Credit for half-remembering something nearly 25 years after airing, but it's very blatantly not anti-Communist. Daria is forced to participate in a reading and says she has nothing, Jane tells her to read something that dullards like Kevin/Britany would drink up "like an elixir." Here's what Daria reads-- we don't see her deciding to choose this, we're not sure if it's her own words or just some airport broiler, but based on the entire rest of the series it's not unreasonable to think she was plagarizing:

I just started in on a full Daria rewatch earlier this week and that scene hit me in the aforementioned brain-whiplash way and I had to re-watch it to figure out wtf I just saw.

I reached the same "she just plagiarized this, or it's some kind of tongue-in-cheek stir-up-the-crowd writing" conclusion. I can't see Daria penning "twelve dead Russians, five dead Chinese, three or four dead Cubans. The world was once again safe for democracy..." with sincerity. But, yeah - doesn't really land. 4th episode follies.

The show as a whole is S-tier though, even in the first season.

Speaking of cartoons, someone uploaded the whole of Duckman to YouTube, so get it while it's hot, I guess

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc6e_lF_xWE&t=21661s

In rewatching it, I'm about halfway through the second season and I think the show mostly holds up. It is the most painfully mid-90s thing ever, and as such there's the usual moments that are a little more genuinely off-color. But for every eye-rolling joke there are two that made me laugh out loud, though 90% of that is the delivery of the voice actors (Specifically Jason Alexander and Tim Curry when he shows up.)

Related-- anyone notice that Daria's voice actress dropped off the face of the earth after the show? I googled around to see if she worked much after, and she basically vanishes after 2002.
She’s an executive at Comedy Central, some kind of VP I think.

VP of 'on air creative' whatever the hell that means. That Morgendorffer family really liked to eat frozen lazaney. https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/tv-shows/Daria/

It's good to have a sense of scale.

Duckman was the first truly adult oriented cartoon I ever saw. It was also the first piece of media, coming at the tail end of the 90's, that said loudly and proudly "being an adult sucks and you should try to avoid it for as long as possible". I always got told I was "mature for my age" and I'm 90% sure it was from the cynicism I picked up from Duckman.

It was always a joy to find Duckman airing on late nite USA Network. I wish the show was better known because it's so quotable and yet and there aren't many clips on Youtube.

I tried watching for a bit, but I found the ultra 90's nothing matters cynicism overbearing. Life sucks, yes, but there are more creative and entertaining ways to express that than just blatantly stating it over and over.

Someday Bob Mackey will get his Talking Duckman on Talking Simpsons.

I remember when Teletoon in Canada spent a ton of money to get the rights to Duckman and it was all over the channel in its early days. Hilarious I remember critics complaining that there was too much stuff that wasn't Canadian and it should just be Nation Film Board cartoons and other Canadian content. Yea that would have been real popular.

Anyways, I was reminded today that Len had a song that was fairly popular here in the mid 90s.

I dunno if it would have been more popular, but their skater shoegaze sound is a lot more interesting than what they did later.

It's lazy. It's just "here's a bunch of stuff from the 90s!". As like maybe a pub quiz kind of thing where you have to to identify stuff as a game, yea, but "omg its the most 90s picture ever!" no, its bad. It's like that kid you knew in high school who thought just quoting movies and tv shows was comedy.

oh that really sucks dude

I had the ugly baby stegosaurus one, which was hella lame

I even politely asked the Burger King lady if they had literally any other one, and she checked for me but they didn’t :(

same Burger King would go on to screw me again four years later when they had those glass LoTR goblets with the plastic LED bases. Motherfuckers only had Frodo staring like a doofus at the ring

like who the gently caress wants Frodo when you could have Gandalf or Aragorn?

This is in fact, exactly where I saw it, ha! Teletoon played a lot of weird poo poo and I'm really glad they did. Totally opened up the world of animation for me beyond reruns of 80's cartoons, and 90's kid-friendly After School/Saturday Morning programming.
