That’s just one of those Kpop terms. It basically means company provided apartment but of course they vary in quality of life. You’re not wrong about the end bit though. A lot of groups go nowhere and the members end up in their mid to late twenties with no real path forward career wise among other social issues.

I’ve spent the past few weeks getting really into Loona so I might do an effort post going through their massive discography for recommendations and such if anyone is interested.

So Loona is first off different than any other group except maybe NCT. Both in concept and musically. They have nearly 100 songs in just a few years. They have 35 music videos total including 29 solo and sub unit music videos. They filmed these all over the world to fit the concept and lore stuff which I won't go into much but in short everything plays into their story from the music to the visuals but it's mostly background stuff you can completely ignore and still enjoy the group 100%. Their cinematography is really something else too, especially their full group mvs.

The music varies from big band jazz pop to future bass r&b and everything in between, but the key thing going on musically is that they play with expectations a lot and really change things up in clever ways with the song writing that adds a layer to everything and differentiates their sound from others, no matter what genre they're doing. Harmonically, they play with interesting chords and give almost every song a dreamy like or haunting sound in at least one section. It's really smart stuff underneath pretty approachable pop which is what hooked me. They were also a few years ahead of a lot of musical trends in the industry. It's also worth noting that their latest two EPs were produced by Lee Soo-man, the first time he's worked with a non SM artist.

Solo tracks/members:

These are all really worth listening to if only to get a taste of how vast their sound is and they're all solid tracks, but I'll bold the ones that are my favorites. It's also good to watch them all to see just how talented every member is all around. They don't have official roles other than Haseul being the leader, even though some might stick out as better dancers or vocalists, they're all around a very holistic approach to a big group. Their choreo is also entirely unique, mixing intricate formations and movements with almost a marching band precision, especially with their full group songs.

Heejin - Vivid

funky sax pop with that dreamy sound I mentioned

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FCYE87P5L0

Hyunjin - Around You

somber downtempo song that gives me IU vibes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mybsDDymrsc

Haseul - Let Me In

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a4BWpBJppI

haunting ballad with an orchestral score - also shot in Iceland and it's just beautiful. Haseul is also a classically trained opera singer, and it's worth checking out some of her vocal compliations

Yeojin - Kiss Later

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thpTOAS1Vgg

Jazz pop that sounds right out of Mario Odyssey or Katamari Damacy. Yeojin was just 14 when this came out and it's appropriately adorable

Vivi - Everyday I Love You (ft Haseul)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNcBZM5SvbY

Big 90s indie pop sound and style

Kim Lip - Eclipse

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qJEoSa3Ie0

90s R&B that sounds so thick and good and the start of a more mature and sexy sound for the next few girls. Yes, it's shot in that same venue as every other video lol

Jinsoul - Singing in the Rain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWeyOyY_puQ

future bass and jungle beat. this is my favorite solo song. Jinsoul also turned out to be a powerhouse vocal and I love her voice.

(there's a lot of not so subtle religious allegory in Loona stuff lol)

Choerry - Love Cherry Motion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBbeuXW8Nko

This is probably the best solo song to exemplify Loona's sound. Straight bubblegum pop until it's 100% NOT, but it works so well for the song. Seriously a great beat switch. It's like YG's style done with more logic behind it musically.

Yves - New

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIDe-yTxda0

2000s club sound with a great driving beat. Reminds me of the Drive soundtrack.

Chuu - Heart Attack.

By far the most popular solo and one of their most popular songs. Hard rhythm and heavy synth under Chuu singing the hell out of it. Chuu is the other surprise power vocal and has just an insane amount of charisma and energy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVVfMFS3mgc

Gowon - One&Only
Synthpop but with a cool chromatic vibe that gives it that Loona sound

Olivia Hye ft Jinsoul- Egoist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkY8HvgvBJ8

Dream pop sound that is the best preview of what Loona as a whole would be leaning towards

Subunits
I'll just list my favorite song from each but again, all worth listening to

1/3 - Love&Live
pure retro bubblegum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K4b9Z9lSwc

Odd Eye Circle - Sweet Crazy Love
Another track that is a good mix of the Loona sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG7FkoNKBzI

YYXY ft Grimes - love4eva
8 bit vibes but with great vocal performances that really make it work

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIWpr3tHzII

Group MVs

Now we're really in it. Watch all of these if only to appreciate the production value of everything.

favOriTe
This combines all of the synth and r&b sounds into what I consider the signature Loona sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFJPFfnzZ7w

Hi High
Technically favorite came out a few days before, but this is really their group debut. The hyper synth bubblegum sound here is really catchy but this song is about the vocals. Chuu's moment in the bridge is definitely iconic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=846cjX0ZTrk

Butterfly
This was their breakout song from what I can tell. Absolutely beautiful video/choreo/song and it would be my favorite if not for the next one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEOCbFJjRw0

So What
My favorite Loona track because it's so aggressive and confident. They kill the live stages of it too, the dance is just so satisfying. Jinsoul really gets to flex her vocals in this one despite most of the song being gang vocals and more rhythmically based like Itzy songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEo5bmUKFvI

Why Not
definitely a part 2 to So What, musically and visually. The next video teaser seems to imply a trilogy which I'm 100% down for

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6li05zh3Kg

Star
Their big western breakout hit. It's still in the US top 40 for over a month straight, and they're only the second girlgroup to chart there (and first to do it with without a western artist feature - BP w/ Selena Gomez). I heard this song playing in Walmart of all places.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW-AIXAnLcE

So yeah, they've quickly become one of my favorite GGs because of their talent and originality. If you only want to check out a few songs I'd say go with Heart Attack, Butterfly, and So What. That will give you a good taste of what they have to offer.`

The access you can get when your agency is two steps away from an arms company :v: (Blockberry creative is a subsidiary of Polaris Ent, which is a subsidiary of Ilkwang group who mainly deal in arms for those who don't know)

Also Loona were once supposed to release a ballad album but the producer had a tantrum and deleted it all, which is still a shame imo. I'm sure it's more complicated than that but that's my memory of it.

Itzy released their Midzy fan song. Not really notable because it's thematically the same as every other fan song, but I was impressed that they got 50 different language subtitles done for it. Hopefully JYP paid for them and didn't contact random fans to do them for free.

Fan translation accounts do so much work, I follow the twice translator misayeon on twitter and last year it seemed like she translated significantly more stuff than what I had to translate as part of my translation degree. Because she's also primarily a Mina fan with 400,000 followers, she also got bombarded with comments from some other twice stans saying she should be focusing on all members and not favouring Mina which was the most insanely stupid criticism to see and did make me wonder why anybody would bother doing it once that happens.

Apparently they're planning a fan meet and this is just a sub-unit as well, and some people in the comments seem to be into it? I understand people liking virtual groups or idols or whatever but this one I don't really understand because to me every frame of the video looked horrible and the song is probably one of the worst I've ever heard. I'd be interested to see how they improve the tech over time though

https://biaswrecker.com/new-girl-group-with-ai-members-to-debut-this-march/

All the members’ faces were chosen through “AI.DOL CHALLENGE”, which pitted hundreds of synthesized idols together in a vote earlier this year.

Alongside their activities as a virtual group, the Eternity members will also form unit groups and release solo songs according to Pulse9. On top of that, the company will use Eternity as YouTubers, influencers, and brand models. One of the virtual members, Chorong, has already appeared in an advertisement for brokerage company Shinhan Investment Corp.

So I guess they are actually very serious about this project.

She basically self made that whole thing with the help of some friends, from what I read Cube didn’t even record or produce it. It’s a smart move for her though. She’s been building her own brand for a while now and getting big on tik tok and stuff and a western song will only help, just like Rosé. CLC has so much talent that has been mostly wasted by Cube with how lazily they were promoted after Idle blew up.

btw A++ LOONA dump. I've been meaning to get more into them and I'll likely end up using this post first when I dive in!

This (and the Brave Girls blow up) also reminds me I've been meaning to do a big effort post about EXID one of these days. Thinking about doing one for Oh My Girl, as well. If anybody is interested lmk! I have a ton of people I want to effort post about in general, but they'll likely be the first ones.

Also whew lad that digital group is definitely a thing. But between Vocaloids and Vtubers, it was only a matter of time before someone finally tried it. I think the uncanny valleyness of it all is the worst part. Like, the song is also not good, but at least if the idols were more cartoonish or stylized it would be less lowkey terrifying.

I'm still pretty new to K-Pop, Dreamcatcher just grabbed my heart and pulled me in super hard. This was the first time I ever spent money on anything relating to it, but I don't regret it one bit. Day one alone was worth the forty dollars.
