Most successful battles end with just 1 or 2 people clinging onto dear life as they get the last bit of damage.

Charon is OP though.
Oh yeah, Expert mode, should have specified.

Yeah, he's rough. Feels like you need both good strategy as well as a fair bit of luck when going up against him.

I kept getting frustrated and shelved the game for just long enough to forget how to play and then come back to try again. I really like the game but drat there's a lot of mechanics to keep straight during combat.

In contrast, I've beaten the final boss and got the end credits...

If so, I guess I'll pay the $10 a month to play it there.

That's correct, the Windows Store/Game Pass one is by all accounts much better technical/stability wise compared to Steam. Steam version worked fine with the FAR mod for me, but it's probably much more cost effective to do Game Pass anyway.

I'm actually really really enjoying the game now. It was such a slog getting through that first level for me but with better gear and a bit more of an understanding of how combat works, the next levels have been much less frustrating. I'm still getting fed up and quitting because a boss pisses me off but at least I am not having as much of an issue with the chaff in between boss fights. I've also been trying any weapon I find if it's better damage than the last and have stumbled on some real cool poo poo like the hatchets and the switch..pole? thing? I forget what it's called but I like the range of it.

I've been playing Mundaun for a few hours now and I like it a lot. Explore a remote town in the swiss alps and find out what led to your grandfather burning to death in his barn. The devil is probably involved in cases and places like this.

It's the work of a single (I think) swiss dude using a unique pencil drawing artstyle which works for me most of the time though sometimes it can also look a bit washed out and PS1 era-ish. The voice work is in a rare swiss dialect with latin and german roots.

I expected like a two hour artsy walking simulator but turns out this is a pretty full fledged horror/survival/adventure type game. Give it a look if you like that kind of stuff, it's like 15 bucks.

For what it's worth, I'm getting pretty close to the end of the game, and the third boss (the snake unicorn thing) is still by far the hardest one I've fought. That big room-clearing attack with almost no windup is just infuriating. Every other fight has been a lot more fun, usually only took one or two tries.

And yeah the hatchets are really cool. They're basically tonfa, but with ranged attacks!

I think that 99% of the stuff in the Steam discovery queue is utter crap. It's mostly just endless recycled variations of different gameplay concepts with not really enough to stand out from the crowd and create a truly compelling gameplay experience.

It's really not clear that the current state of the market is sustainable, and I at least would be happier if I'd bought fewer cheap and potentially crappy games.
Every single article like this, including this one, looks at pricing entirely from the dev perspective, and uses breakout well made indie games as representatives for a flooded market. Sustainable is the wrong word to use because the market simply doesn't sustain anything for many indie devs, and it never has and never will no matter what pricing schemes they choose. Because even if you ignore all the asset flips and game like trash, there are so many games available that if you can't stand out you won't make it. This is not unique to games, it's not even, as that one economist in the article suggests, restricted to "creatives." It's a reality of capitalism that a lot of businesses fail, especially small ones, because matching cost, price and demand in a sustainable way is difficult and circumstantial.

It's interesting that the article's thrust seems to be "price higher, and justify your higher price by making it better, more unique and more polished" as if that was something most indie devs were able to do.
I mean just look at this quote:

quote:

Or they could relate a game to its existing exemplars through its pricing. So they can advertise, say, a Civ-like game as 20% cheaper than Civilisation, rather than price it with the low price of other indie strategy games. (Maybe because he's an economist, Bergen is a big Civ fan.)
Yes, this is a great strategy in theoretical economist land. In reality, making a game that can compete on that level requires investment capital that would take you orders of magnitude beyond what most people think of when you say "indie dev." The Endless Legend devs (published by Sega) are doing it, so now your theoretical indie dev has to compete with Civ and with them for value.

or

quote:

The Witness managed it, though, and it did it by following one of Bergen's general strategies for going value-based: by focusing on making a high-quality, distinctive, long and feature-filled game. Easy, right? Of course, The Witness also had Blow's reputation behind it.
Yeah, that last line is not a throwaway, it's an integral part of why that game was a success. Also not just his reputation making marketing easier, but the opportunities his initial success gave him to be able to make that high quality distinctive long and feature filled game in the first place.

Unlike what the article suggests, low pricing from indie devs is not something done to entice customers with the price, it's something done to lower the barrier of entry into the unknown. No one stands out because their game is $10 instead of $20, but when someone hears about that game from somewhere they're more likely to take a flier on it at the lower price. Some specific games may be priced lower than they need to be, but most aren't.

Also LOL at PC gamer tweeting out a 4 year old article as if it were new.

The biggest problem with recommender systems is that they tend to push everyone towards the same already popular products. Steam's doesn't behave like that, which is a good thing, but it's not at all clear that that's intentional.

The underlying question of game pricing and the indie ecosystem is still relevant, but the article itself isn't particularly relevant. For one, the entire bundle ecosystem, a primary way for indie games to get sales, has undergone at least one, maybe two, significant shifts in that time. I expect that new tweets from magazines/newspapers etc tweeting their own articles to be new articles (unless noted otherwise), but fair enough that that assumption is on me and not implied by the tweet.

Actually I wonder what's in my discovery queue, I never look there unless a sale is giving me cards to check it.

Valheim, Baldur's Gate 3, Jackbox Party Pack 7, Apex Legends, Dragon Quest XI S, Crusader Kings 3, Mr. Prepper, Forza Horizon 4, some game called 鬼谷八荒 that doesn't even have english language support yet, Nioh 2, Little Nightmares 2, and Labyrinthine. Only 3 games there I haven't heard about (Mr. Prepper, 鬼谷八荒, and Labyrinthine), and the rest are games I've either heard of that looked interesting or heard of and seemed decently received but aren't my kind of game, and the only ones I don't really know for sure about are Forza Horizon 4 (I don't follow racing games so idk if it is a good racing game or if I'd enjoy it) and Apex Legends (I only recognize the name and know not much else about it).

I'm surprised, I was expecting the queue to be a bit more random, it just seemed to dump whatever is a recent popular release on me though I guess that's kind of the point when so many of the titles are recommended because they're popular and/or sold well. I assume if I used the queue more often then it'd probably have less current major titles in the queue and more random indie titles.

sorry i wasn't trying to be mean if it came across that way, i was just trying to say it's kind of self evident that you'd find the steam discovery queue more useful than most people, you buy lots of games and you like finding new games to experiment with. but for someone who's not regularly picking up new games, or wanting to try them out at the drop of a hat, the utility of it as a meaningful way to find new games that they'd actually like goes down dramatically
