I have never heard of Royal Ivey. Apparently he played for Texas just before I started going there and now he’s this NBA assistant? Also Kevin Durant endorsed him.

I dunno, I’d much rather have Chris Beard. Taking a gamble on a guy with no head coaching experience seems like a bad idea for a program that just spent the last 6 years regressing from a bad NCAA tourney team to an okay-to-good NIT team.

The only sticking point with Beard is that they would probably have to pay him more than Sark and I’m more sure the money folks want to pay the basketball coach more than the football coach, but maybe I’m wrong

Ivey played for the Hawks a bit. Not much of a player, but considered a very smart guy then.

I haven't thought about him in years, but can recall the first name is pronounced Roy-Al.

fake edit: Somehow, he had parts of 10 seasons in the NBA.

If they can't get a big name to bite Ivey isn't a bad guy to take a shot on, he's been an NBA assistant for awhile now, which usually gives coaches a leg up on xs and os now.

Every single year the Ivy League takes a break from fucking up the world through its various alumni to fuck up everyone's bracket instead.
Jabari Abdur-Rahim is transferring out of UVA, a week after Casey Morsell entered the portal. I know everyone is losing people to transfers now but these two highlight a huge problem for Tony Bennett: his system takes too long to learn for first-years to stick around till they're trusted to play, especially when they have other options just a transfer away.

Bennett has been one of the best coaches in the country in terms of program and player development. But he doesn't look like getting the athleticism of the Guy/Hunter/Jerome/Diakite team any time soon, and you absolutely have to have athletes to hang right now. The only freshmen who play right away now are the ones who come in with very strong defensive fundamentals—but UVA isn't getting the type of five or high-four-star player who can do that and get buckets. Hence the struggle to score for just huge periods of time.

UVA won a bunch of games this year in a weak ACC but they were never convincing and absolutely no one was surprised to see them go out in the first round. If Bennett doesn't figure this out (and getting transfers back in only helps so much, they still have to learn the pack line), this will be the upper end of what they can expect to get out of a season.

Arkansas men postmortem:

Tough game for lottery pick Moses Moody to go 2-10 in and Notae to foul out having only played 15 minutes. If you offered me 48% from the field, 74% from the free throw line, and out rebounding Baylor before the game I would have taken it. Great run. Looking forward to next year. I think this run has done a lot to put Arkansas back on the map and, while I don’t want to get ahead of myself because it’s one year, I think Muss needs to get paid big and that the immediate expectation should be second weekend again next year. We have facilities that can go head to head with just about anyone and an NBA sized arena to play in, we should be able to reach recruits. Oh, and we gotta do something about getting into massive holes before clawing out, that sucks lol

Arkansas women postmortem:

Any year you can beat Baylor and be the -1 in UConns record is a good year! It just sucks to get upset in the first round and not get a chance to push on. Oregon State’s Sasha Goforth is transferring, that *has* to be priority #1 for Arkansas. Had a surprising number of players from Arkansas already enter the portal, but with Goforth we would have three high school 5* players on the team. Tough end, but the programming is trending in the right direction. Top of the SEC is kinda a murderers row, but goal needs to be pushing for top 4 in conference

I'm probably just cranky from seeing the incredibly predictable message board / social media takes that these players (including McKoy, who went in the portal today) just didn't have the "grit" to play in Bennett's system, or whatever other dogwhistle they're gonna use

I think all this normalizes a bit next year but it's going to be a very weird offseason till then

Pretty big, he's really good and can actually run an offense which they didn't have this year. Should be their best shooter too. He was one of the best transfers on the market.

Speaking of Iowa needs to hit the transfer market for a center bad now, hopefully Garza is a big selling point

https://twitter.com/IowaHoops/status/1377019538190008320?s=19

He would have started and been pretty good if he'd been healthy I think but his dad died this year so can't blame him for wanting to be closer to home. Had a really nice year for Iowa off the bench and I think has some upside as a shooter maybe, so should be a nice pickup for someone

I can see Calipari's focus shift more toward the transfer portal going forward, granted he was already trending toward that since Nate Sestina a couple years back.

In any case, he is a welcome addition next to Davion Mintz if the freshman don't pan out.
